Edison Company Have Problem with Aluminum Strips Southern California Edison Company reports that more aluminum foil of the type dropped by military aircraft showered down on parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties one morning last week. "These are potentially dangerous incidents, which could result in widespread destruction of vital electric service to entire communities," R. E. Bacon, Edison district manager said. Fortunately, however, the tinsel strips did not fall on power lines so there was none of the extensive electrical service interruption which characterized the previous "raid." The latest deluge of foli occurred just as Edison officials were protesting to the U. S. Air Force and Navy about the "very real danger" which results from "indiscriminate dropping" of aluminum strips, according to Mr. Bacon. In the previous incident, strips fell across a number of Edison distribution lines, with the resulting short circuits disrupting service to more than 25,000 people. B4 - Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Calif., Thurs., Feb. 14, 1957 The strips varied in length from a few inches to 30 feet. A total of 12 circuits serving portions of the Long Beach, Compton, Redondo Beach, Santa Ana, Alhambra, Montebello and Huntington Beach areas were interrupted for periods ranging from a half minute to nearly three hours—in spite of all-out emergency efforts put forth by harried Edison repair crews. Thirteen lines were burned down. Mr. Bacon termed it "just plain luck" that some of the falling tinsel did not cause interruptions to substation equipment or major high voltage lines. Foll was found in the vicinity of both, he reported. He pointed out that similar "tinsel storms" have occurred at least twice before in Edison territory, but never on as large a scale. On both previous occasions, he said, the Edison Company requested both the Air Force and Navy to take appropriate action to prevent such occurrences in the future. "Naturally, we don't want to hamper the national defense effort," Mr. Bacon stated. "But we believe that military planes can perform their foil tests effectively over unpopulated areas, and where wind will not blow the material into populated areas."
