The regular January meeting of the Anaheim Business and Professional Womens Club was held at the Optimist club house with Eyah Drennon, president, presiding. The meeting opened with Doris Doetsch leading the Pledge to the Flag and Ruby Terry giving the "Thought for the Day." Maxine Weigand of the World Travel Bureau was introduced as a guest. Ruth Jones reported on attending the installation of officers of the Women's Relief Corps in Fullerton where Florence Davis, junior past president, was installed as president. Other meetings reported on were the Altrusa dinner and Girl Scout dinner. The San Orco District Conference recently held at Arrowhead Springs Hotel had 11 Anaheim members present for the entire session and five more registered for the banquet on Saturday night. Signa Hatfield told of the Saturday afternoon session at which time routine business included the report of Emma Lawrence, finance chairman of the district. The nominating committee reported the following candidates for the offices: president, Helen Turner of Victor Valley; vice president, Elyera Hasford of Santa Ana; recording secretary, Alean Searle of Laguna Beach. Anaheim Girl in "Mermaid" Contest Betty Roush of 10362 McDaniel, Anaheim, is among the finalists in the contest for a "Mermaid" at Marineland of the Pacific, which, after a three-month long search, will culminate Sunday, Feb. 3, with the final judging of the contest. Visitors to the Oceanarium will witness as a special treat, "Mermaids on Parade" along with the testing of their swimming ability. This event will be just a part of Marineland's attractions. From a field of 20 beautiful candidates, judges will select five most mermaid-like finalists. The five will try their swimming talents in the pool. The best will be chosen mermaid and the remaining four will serve as her court. She will eventually become a part of Marineland's gigantic sea circus. Ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. and continue through most of the day. Judges of the unique contest include Harry Koplon of CBS, and producer of the "Fare For Ladies" show which sponsored the contest; William F. Monahan, vice president and treasurer of Oceanarium, Inc., and an authority on marine life. Mrs. Ruby Snider Dies Unexpectedly Mrs. Ruby Snider, 65, a native of Missouri who was brought to the Anaheim-area as a child and who had lived in Atwood continuously, her home of late birth. night. Ruth Kearns on credentials and Emma Lawrence on resolutions. Mae Cornbloom was elected judge of the election board with Margaret Kritzman the inspector, Louise Corey and Dr. Della Francone as tellers. Two past state presidents and nine district presidents had a round table "Steps to Top Leadership" in which many points were reviewed regarding Federation objectives and how to achieve them. The past state presidents were Mrs. Dana Newton of Ontario, Miss Dorothy Decker of Santa Ana. The past district presidents were Miss Ethel Coffman of Santa Ana, Mrs. Emma Leubbers of Ontario, Miss Lucille Majors of Ontario, Mrs. Inez Bertmann of Orange, Miss Eva Bemis of San Bernardino, Miss Daley Grinnage of Newport Harbor, Mrs. Zella Stone of Upland, Mrs. Ruth Parks of Santa Ana and Mrs. Ruth Feuerstein of San Bernardino. Mayor Gregory of San Bernardino gave the welcome at the banquet Saturday evening banquet with Mrs. Gregory as a special guest of the evening. Music was provided by the McDonald Brothers, F. X. & Chad, who have programs on the Victor Valley radio station. Selections were "Big Rock Candy Mountain," "Molly Malone," "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," "Cool Water," "On Top of Old Smoky." Mrs. Ruby Snider Dies Unexpectedly Mrs. Ruby Snider, 66, a native of Missouri who was brought to the Anaheim-area as a child and who had lived in Atwood continuously, her home of late being at 6572 Van Buren St., was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Orange County Hospital the evening of Jan. 25. She had been ill for months but was uexpectedly stricken and then rushed to the hospital. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Snider in Stockton; two sisters, Mrs. Pearl Vargas of Atwood and Mrs. Marie Whitton of South Gate. A wake was observed at Hilgenfeld chapel Monday night at 7:30 and funeral service was held Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial followed in Loma Vista Memorial Park. Mrs. Beatrice Gude Dies Saturday Eve. Mollie Beatrice Cude, a native of Texas who came to California one and one-half years ago and who had resided with her daughter at 521 Carlton St., Ontario, died Saturday evening at the San Bernardino County Hospital after an extended illness. She was 62 years of age. Surviving is one son, T. L. Cude of Los Angeles; two daughters, Mrs. John Mason and Mrs. Dick Adams, both of Ontario, and seven grandchildren. She was a member of the Nazarene church. Funeral services were conducted from Hilgenfeld chapel Tuesday at 2 p.m. Rev. Murray Morford, pastor of the Anaheim Church of The Nazarene, officiated and burial followed in the family plot in Melrose Abbey cemetery. John Geo. Charlton Dies at Home Here John George Charlton, 83 years of age, a native of England who John Geo. Charlton Dies at Home Here John George Charlton, 83 years of age, a native of England who came to America in 1883, to California in 1912, residing in Anaheim for three years, died last Tuesday at the family home, 1003 W. North St., after a prolonged illness. He is survived by his wife, Eugenia C. Charlton; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Murphy of Apple Valley and Mrs. Myrtle Davis of Anaheim; one son, Neil Charlton of San Diego; two grandchildren, Mrs. Virginia Trabant and John Murphy both of Riverside and one great grandson, Gary Trabant of Riverside. He was a member of the Anaheim Church of The Nazarene. Funeral services will be conducted from Hilgenfeld Chapel Saturday at 11 a.m. with burial in the family plot in Fairhaven Memorial Park. A delightful social hour was enjoyed with delicious home made cake served by the hostess committee composed of Arline McLaine, chairman, Mabel Masterson, Mamie Lane, Clare Stagner and Stasie Armstrong. The next meeting will be Bosses' Night with dinner at Bed Wagon Inn, Disneyland, on February 12. W Auxiliary Air Speaker from Vet Welfare members of the Apaheim VFW diary, at their regular meeting Jan. 28, had as principal ter, Mr. Vernon A. Mathews, ident of Orange County VetWelfare Association. This organization is contacting all pacific organizations in the countries of increasing their membership and in this way all veterans relief would be handled by the Veteran Welfare Association. A new member, Mrs. Barbara S. Smith of this city, was welcomed into the auxiliary. The Second District convention held in Riverside Jan. 20 was reported by Mrs. Ernest Richards and Mrs. Ralph Aldrich. Mrs. Merle Carroll, president, and Mrs. Aldrich gave a report of the Second District tea and Hospital Day South held at the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital Jan. 27. Feb. 25 will be guest night and all members are to invite a guest from a neighboring auxiliary. For the social hour following the meeting, Mrs. Ralph Aldrich and her committee had charge of refreshments. Carlton H. Johnson Anaheim Resident 20 Years, Dies Tue Carlton "Carl" H. Johnson, born Michigan 53 years ago, coming California 35 years ago and dying in Anaheim more than 20 years, died early Tuesday morning at the family home at N. Pine St., after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife, K. Irene Johnson; one daughter, Diane Carlene at home; one sister, Mrs. Bernice F. Flynn of Encino, one nephew, John Steven Tyler of Long Beach, and one niece, Mrs. Patricia A. Corvino of Eureka. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Anaheim. Funeral services will be conducted at Hilgenfeld Chapel Friday at 2 p.m. Rev. Arthur M. Stevenson, associate pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Marine Pfc. Duane A. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest F. Johnson of 553 Parkwood St., and Marine Pvt. James L. Schachner, son of Mrs. Opale Schachner of 1429 Frances Dr., both of Anaheim, are attending the Basic Aviation Machinist's Mate School at the Naval Air Technical Training Center, Memphis, Tenn.
