75 Years Ago...
December 31 — 1881
Last week we recorded the accident which happened to Mr. Charles B. Balch with no thought that we would be called upon to chronicle his death as a result of the wound. On Thursday night he was assisting to decorate St. Michael's Church for the Christmas services, having come from Orange for that purpose. He was cutting some evergreens with his pocket knife, when the knife struck his wrist and severed an artery, from which the blood flowed copiously. He was taken to a physician immediately after the accident, the artery was bound and it was thought that in a week or two all would be well, but the loss of blood and the nervous shock had weakened him more than was at first thought and on Wednesday morning he died at the home of Rev. Emery, who had cared for him like a brother. Funeral services at St. Michael's church were conducted by Rev. Emery. The church was filled with people, the decorations which the dead man had helped were draped with mourning and beautiful floral tributes were strewn about in abundance. After services the remains, (which had been embalmed) were taken to the depot and forwarded by rail to his father in Boston who had

At 8 o'clock on Thursday evening rain began falling and continued steadily throughout the night. It is estimated that at midnight nearly two inches had fallen, and water ran in the streets six inches deep, in many cases running over the sidewalks. One man fitted out with gum boots carried people across the streets at midnight charging a quarter for his services.
During the night rain fell in sheets. At 7 o'clock on Friday morning Mr. Dickel's gauge showed 2.96 ins. for the night. Mr. Neff measured 3.20 and at Pincetia Mr. Bradford measured 3.25. The storm brought the total for the season, with showers on Sunday night, to 6.35. Last season's total amounted to 15.89 to the first of the year. November 5 last year 2.32 fell. This season's rain began two weeks later. The year promises to be one of the most favorable in every respect. Thirty-seven hundredth's of an inch fell on Monday to noon bringing the total for the season to 6.72. Last year to date 5.65.

Another of the popular concert dinners has been planned for Sunday, Jan. 20, when the Orange County Philharmonic Society orchestra, under the batte of Frieda Belinfante, presents a third full symphony program at the concert season at Garden Grove.
The dinner will be held at the Greenbrier Inn restaurant, Garden Grove, at 6 p.m., just preceding the concert, with a cocktail hour beginning at 5 p.m. Reservations are $3.50 per person and may be made by calling 9-7293, KI 5-4012, or Harbor 4114. Mrs. John Cowles, area chairman for Garden Grove, asks that reservations for the dinner be made no later than Thursday Jan. 17.
Previous dinners in other Orange county cities where the Society has presented concerts have been well received, and committee members of the Garden Grove area have been working to make this pre-concert event a successful one. Among the members of the committee are Mmes Maigne Weld, Angus Tierney, Mr. ville Singer, Louis Lake, La Thomas, Gloria Henson, Lawren Mosler and Fae Heusen, all of Garden Grove.
Following the dinner, the concert will begin at 8:30 p.m., the new Argonaut Auditorium Union High School, Stanford Ave., and Fifth St., Garden Grove All Orange County Philharmonic Society
While amusing himself with a toy pistol a few days ago the young son of Mr. Hetebrink had his face filled with powder from the cartridge. The little man bore the pain of having the grains picked out by Dr. Bailey with fortitude.
Mr. R. J. Northam leaves for San Francisco today to be gone six days. He takes with him a great number of applications for the purchase of land, which he will submit to the authorities in the city.
Mr. Wm. Fesenfeld came home from Tombstone A. T. last Thursday to pass the holidays with his family. We are pleased to learn that he has met with good success in the territory.
One hundred and twenty-five tons of castor beans were gathered in the vicinity of Downey City during the past year.
The estimated yield of wine in this state for 1881 is 8,000,000 gallons as against 12,000,000 gallons in 1890.
Victor Montgomery Esq., has discontinued his semi-weekly visits to Anaheim for the present, but will respond to any calls which may be sent to him.
Mrs. Mary Ferguson Passes Tuesday
Mrs. Mary Ferguson, 506 W. North St., Anaheim, passed away in St. Joseph hospital Tuesday at the age of 76. Born in Nebraska, she had been a resident of Anaheim 37 years.
The Knights of Columbus entertained a happy throng of sixty couples at an enjoyable social dance at the opera house on Monday evening. Music was furnished by the Anaheim orchestra and dancing continued until 1:30. At midnight when the ringing of church bells announced the close of the old year and the advent of the new, hearty New Year's greetings were exchanged. Supper was served in the hall upon the lower floor. Committees in charge of the ball were as follows: Floor committee: A. Rimpau, J. M. Backs, R. W. Halligan, J. T. Shea. Reception committee: C. F. Grim, W. L. Finney, F. Walter, T. Deitrich, J. Baum.
Lemuel Goldwater, formerly in the banking business here, now of Cohen, Goldwater & Co., wholesale clothing dealers of Los Angeles, suffered serious loss in the total destruction of his place of business one evening recently by fire. The loss is placed at $456,-000, insurance $250,000.
Dr. Lloyd C. Bailey was in town Friday afternoon after an absence of ten years in Mazatlan, Mexico, where he has built up a fine practice in dentistry. He is at present in Phoenix where his wife and children are guests of his parents and will in a few days return with his family to Mexico.
Chris Gelderman has purchased the interest of F. W. Fleischman in the City Meat Market and will in future conduct the business.
The population of Anaheim increased during the past year until it is now over 3000. The property increase is 25 per cent. Fifty-nine building permits have been issued since May 1st.

Mrs. Mary Ferguson Passes Tuesday
Mrs. Mary Ferguson, 506 W. North St., Anaheim, passed away in St. Joseph hospital Tuesday at the age of 76. Born in Nebraska, she had been a resident of Anaheim 37 years.
She is survived by two sons, Vern Ferguson of Castiac, Calif., and Lee Ferguson of Anaheim; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Christian Church of Wingale, Ind.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. A. J. Casebeer officiating. Interment in Anaheim cemetery.
H. W. Skinner, 72, Dies Wednesday
Horace W. Skinner, 72, a resident of the Anaheim and Fullerton area for 65 years, passed away Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He resided at 1431 W. Orange-thorpe Ave., Fullerton.
In 1900 he established the first automobile agency in Fullerton.
He is survived by his wife, Hilda D. of Fullerton; a daughter, Mrs. June L. Davis of Corona del Mar; a son, Cmdr. James L. Skinner of the U.S. Navy, stationed at Baltimore, Md., and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary Friday at 3:30 p.m. with interment at Fairhaven cemetery.
The population of Anaheim increased during the past year until it is now over 3000. The property increase is 25 per cent. Fifty-nine building permits have been issued since May 1st.

Pvt. Jesse D. May, Jr.; son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse D. May of 10102 Flanner Ave., Anaheim, completed four weeks of individual combat training Dec. 6 at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton. The course of instruction at this huge training base included the latest infantry tactics, first aid, demolitions, field fortifications, and advanced schooling on weapons.
James E. Williams Dies at Age 47
James E., Williams passed away at his home, 216 Charlotte St., Tuesday at the age of 47 years. Born in Illinois; he was a resident of Anaheim one and one-half years. He was a member of the Church of Christ of Illinois.
Surviving are his wife Dorothy L. of Anaheim; two daughters, Mrs. Gwen Henebry of Anaheim and Mrs. Barbara Riley of Anaheim; five grandchildren, three brothers, Andrew, Fred and John of Illinois and three sisters, Mrs. Grace Dulaney, Mrs. Elsie Dawson and Mrs. Bessie Andrews of Illinois.
Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary Friday at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be in Anaheim cemetery.
James Monroe Story
Anaheim Resident 36 Years, Dies Tuesday
James Monroe Story, a native of Arkansas and a resident of Anaheim for 36 years passed away Tuesday morning at the home of his daughter at 14891 Wagner Road after a brief illness. He was 81 years of age.
Surviving are three sons, Raid of Buena Park, Roy of Santa Anita and Ralph Story of Martinez; three daughters, Miss Irene Story of Ventura; Mrs. Kathleen Corran of Huntington Beach and Mrs. Pauline Toussau of Anaheim; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are being conducted from Hilgenfeld chapel today, Thursday, at 2 o'clock Rev. Berthold Jacksteit officializing, followed by interment in La Vista Memorial Park.
Sixty years ago canned goods were a luxury; expensive and used only in emergencies.

Red Cross Board
Hears Junior Member Report
At the Jan. 3 meeting of the
board of directors of the Red Cross chapter, 14 members present heard a report from William Brooks, Junior Red Cross member, who told of the council meeting he attended in San Francisco on Dec. 17 to 19. The Pacific Area Advisory Council of Junior Red Cross is composed of ten members from various parts of the Pacific area, which includes the eight western states. Others represent the area other than William Brooks of Anaheim, were Nancy Warburton of Fullerton and Joseph Head of Los Angeles, who was elected chairman of the council.
The various department reports were given. A letter was read from the Altrusa Club inviting members to their annual dinner on Jan. 14 to be held at the high school cafeteria. It was also reported that P. H. Nelson will replace Chas. Griffith as auditor. Mr. Griffith resigned the post several months ago.
The next Bloodmobile unit will be held at Kwikset Locks on Feb. 21 from 1 to 5:30 p.m.
On Jan. 20, 500 cookies will be sent to the Metropolitan Hospital at Norwalk for their party night.
It was also reported that Dr. M. Gaylord Brown will represent the Red Cross at the Unified Fund Headquarters. Seventeen are in the first aid classes at Kwikset plant. First aid, Standard-course and advanced first aid by mail.

Homemakers Clubs To Study Clothing For Spring Wear
The spotlight will be on spring clothes when the various county Homemakers Clubs meet for study. New spring colors, new fabrics and the new longer, softer silhouette will be shown. Members will learn what added values they can expect from the new blends, how nylon adds strength, dacron aids crease recovery and how rayon helps fabrics resist "pilling".
A sewing tool bag, a 24 inch Jersey blouse, a method for making garments repel rain, will also be demonstrated at the meetings.
On Jan. 9 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., the Euclid Homemakers will meet at the home of Mrs. Victor Jacobsen, 506 No. Philadelphia St., Anaheim. Mrs. Henry Kalusing and Mrs. Rubin Jarman the project leaders.

Broadway P-TA Makes Plans for Month of January
Board members of the Broadway Parent-Teacher Association meet at the home of Miss E. Kate Rae, where plans were made for the regular P-TA meeting Jan. 15, at 7:30 p.m.

Notice of Defaults in and breaches of obligations and the selection of said Beneficiary to cause real property to be sold was recorded in the office of the Recorder of the County of Orange on August 13, 1956, in Book 3609, at page 459, of Official Records, to which said record reference is hereby made.
This notice is given in compliance with a demand heretofore made on the undersigned Trustee by said Beneficiary.
That Corporation of America was substituted as trustee under said trust deed in lieu of the trustee thereto named by substitution recorded June 20th, 1956.
