Live Steam Club Meeting Held Last Sunday in Pico On Sunday, Nov. 25, a large crowd of interested persons attended the meeting of the live steam engine enthusiasts which was held at Streamland Park, Rosemead at Gallatin Road in Pico. The christening of the Venice steam engine was the highlight of the meeting. This engine and two coaches have historical value as a landmark for Los Angeles, Venice and Ocean Park and was built in 1902 by John J. Colt, a railway fireman who worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for many years. He, at one time, had a small live steam engine and railroad in East Lake Park, now known as Lincoln Park in Los Angeles. The line consisted of three engines and 38 coaches and was in existence from 1902 until 1926, a fire destroying most all of the rolling stock. Only the engine and two coaches were salvaged. The Venice Miniature Railway line was abandoned at the time of the fire and the equipment sold to junkyards. Al Smith, a retired narrow gauge railroad man from Colorado, engineer of the same railway equipment now found at Knott's Berry Farm, bought this No. 4 engine and two coaches from Finkelstein's Junkyard where this equipment was for approximately seven years. Taking it home, he worked alone restoring it to running condition. Plan Valley Forge Scout Jamboree BOY SCOUTS EXPLORERS ON TO THE NATIONAL JAMBOREE VALLEY FORGE • PENNSYLVANIA JULY 12-18, 1957 BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Official Poster of Fourth National Jamboree Fifty thousand Boy Scouts, Explorers, and leaders from all parts of the nation and some the largest gathering of boys in the Western Hemisphere. Jamboree campers, all of them Al Smith, a retired narrow gauge railroad man from Colorado, engineer of the same railway equipment now found at Knott's Berry Farm, bought this No. 1 engine and two coaches from Finkelstein's Junkyard where this equipment was for approximately seven years. Taking it home, he worked alone restoring it to running condition. It was later set up at Five Points, near Crawford's Market in Los Angeles, where he operated it for several years, having to give it up due to illness. He sold it at that time to Leon T. Brock, a teacher in Montebello High School, whereupon it was moved to Streamland Park where it has been operated for the past seven years. The equipment was then sold to Frank Balough who immediately chopped this engine with Frank Venolia, an ex-railroad machinist and who has fully restored the engine to a nearly new status. Five different engines were on display Sunday as well as a steam tractor. Santa Fe Changes Train Schedules Effective Sunday, Nov. 25, Santa Fe Railway's transcontinental streamliner, the Chief, eastbound from Los Angeles changed its schedule and is now departing at 9 a.m., PST one hour earlier than previously. The Chief westbound from Chicago will arrive at Los Angeles at 11:15 p.m., 20 minutes later than before, under the new schedule. The departure eastbound from Pasadena will be at 9:30 p.m. while the westbound Chief will arrive there at 10:40 p.m. The Chief provides sleepers and chair-car service and full length dome lounge equipment between Los Angeles and Chicago, and through sleeper and chair-car service to Colorado Springs and Denver. It was also announced, effective Sunday, that the San Diego streamliner northbound from San Diego will arrive at Los Angeles at 8:30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than previously. The northbound Train No. 81 will leave San Diego at 9:30 p.m. and arrive at Los Angeles at 12:30 a.m. Management Club Sees Interesting Demonstration An automobile powered by the sun, an egg fried over a stove which didn't get hot, synthetic rubber made from liquids were just a few of the fascinating wonders displayed at the Anaheim Industrial Management dinner this week as a part of a "Previews of Progress" program sponsored by General Motors Corp. A. Rodney Johnson and Frederick O. Carlson of the GM Public Relations staff were introduced by Jim Wright, vice president. SHOW THIS TO YOUR HUSBAND! Tell him it's you without an electric clothes dryer — tenderly protecting your nice clean (and still wet) wash because you got no cooperation from the weather. Tell him the cure: a shiny new electric dryer. It saves you the lifting and bending and dependence on the weather. It saves clothes—they dry fluffier, cleaner and fresher smelling. They last longer, too. Tell him it has to be an electric dryer, of course. Because it's so safe. Because you simply plug it in. And because it costs less to buy!
