Aug. Employment In Manufacturing To All-Time High Manufacturing employment in the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan area rose last month to an all-time high of 722,500 wage and salary workers. Ernest B. Webb, California Director of Industrial Relations, announced today. The August total was 32,600 above a year ago and 15,200 above the previous high established in March of this year. Between July and August, factory employment in the area by 15,600, reflecting recovery from the steel strike, gains in aircraft and electrical equipment seasonal expansion in apples and in fruit and vegetable canning, and small increases in other industries. Food processing other than fruit and vegetation canning reported an employment decline in August. The bulk of the 32,600 from a year ago was in the able goods group, notably craft, electrical equipment, chinery, and ordinance.
