IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of The Anaheim Gazette By MRC HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago... July 16, 1881 The ladies of the Episcopal church will give a sociable in the old school room under the Maonic Hall on Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock. Admission 10 cents. Ice cream, 25 cents a plate or three for 50 cents. The Express says that the red scale buy is being successfully treated by an orange grower near the Mission in a very simple and inexpensive way. He buys the refuse of soap at the soap factory for 50 cents a barrel. This he mixes with water and boils. When cool by means of a force pump, he throws the lathery solution in sprays over the trees. The scale bug soon yields to this treatment. Sheep owners complain that the valuation placed upon sheep by the county assessor is out of all reason and it is aid that a proposition is now being agitated to retain Theo. Lynell, Esq., to appear before the Board of Equalization, now in session and endeavor to have the valuation lowered. Sheep are hard to sell on the first Monday in March at $1.25 per head and yet they were valued by the assessor at $1.75 per head. Upon a proper showing ice cream and a flow of cider in the ante room seasoned with songs and speeches by the various members. The A & U. W. is the most floorishing order in the state. Its insurance feature whereby the heirs of a deceased member receive without delay $2,000, commends it to all thoughtful men who desire to make provision for their families. Personal Items — Mr. T. Sixteen Reo automobiles have vaded Laguna on Sunday beating a picnic party of sixty persons from this city, Fullerton, Orange and Santa Ana. An hour after leaving this city, the机器 stretching over mile of country, entered for hills beyond El Toro. Laguna was reached in an hour and a half. The roads in the canyon were not such as to admit of speed but on the level stretches to the San Joaquin ranch a third mile clip was maintained for considerable distance. At no lunch baskets were opened as a rare spread partaken of. Among the party were T. Lynell, Esq., to appear before the Board of Equalization, now in session and endeavor to have the valuation lowered. Sheep are hard to sell on the first Monday in March at $1.25 per head and yet they were valued by the assessor at $1.75 per head. Upon a proper showing of these facts the Board will doubtless grant the request for a revaluation. The Board of School trustees met Saturday and appointed C. W. Moores principal for the coming term. BUILDING "ISLANDS" IN THE SEA from which to probe the ocean floor is one good example of how we must search farther afield to find the oil America uses in such quantity. And as new sources of oil become harder to find, locating it and bringing petroleum products to you grows more costly. Last year, a quarter of every dollar Standard took in was plowed back into oil exploration, development of producing fields, research and construction of facilities. All told, during 1955 we invested $347 million to help meet your growing oil needs.
