The 2,000 highways deaths of the past year exceeds the 1954 total of 1,739 by 261. The last year the totals reached the two thousand figure was in 1952 when the traffic deaths were 2,013 and 1953 was nearly as bad with 1,985 fatalities. The county of Los Angeles was one of nine southland counties which had increased over 1954. Santa Barbara county had the largest percentage increase, 52 percent, in recording 58 fatalities in 1955 as compared to 28 the year before. Orange county was the second worst percentage-wise, with a 38 percent increase, having 52 more traffic deaths than in 1954, having 138 fatalities in 1955 as compared to 84 in 1954.
