Manuel D. Gonzales Dies at Vet Hospital Manuel D. Gonzales, 34 years of age, passed away in the Veterans hospital in Long Beach last Saturday, Feb. 25. He was born in Anaheim and had spent his life here until he entered service during World War II. His death was caused from wounds he received in France 12 years ago and he had been hospitalized continuously until his death. Surviving are his father, Monico Gonzales of Anaheim; four brothers, Louis and George, both of Anaheim, and Ignacio and Joe, both of Stanton, and three sisters, Mrs. Virginia Pinedo of Santa Ana, Mrs. Anita Vasquez of Stanton, and Miss Ramona Gonzales of Anaheim. Recitation of Holy Rosary was held Monday evening at 8 o'clock from the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary with Mass today (Thursday) at 9 a.m. at Independencia church in La Jolla colony. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre cemetery with military honors at the graveside. Anna Jauernick Passes Away Sunday Mrs. Anna Jauernick passed away at her home at 206 W. Broadway, this city, last Sunday, Feb. 26. She was born in Austria and had lived in Anaheim for 50 years. Surviving are a niece and a nephew. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic church. Holy Rosary was read at Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars chapel Tuesday evening at 7:30 o'clock with Mass at St. Boniface church THREE LICENSES ISSUED License to wed has been issued to three local couples: James McLaughlin, who has made his home at the Elks club, and Madrienne Tompkins of 617 N. Claudina St.; Nat R. Rocha of 7112 Blue Gum St., and Rose Lina of Placentia, and Gregory L. Fernandez, 1040 Kemp St., and Frances Romero of 6551 Taylor Street. Mrs. Anna E. Algar Claimed by Death Ms. Anna E. Algar, a native of Canada, passed away at St. Joseph hospital last Friday at the age of 73 years. She had resided at the home at 418 Meadowbrook Pl., this city, for a year. Surviving are one son, Cilfton Algar of Anaheim; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Phipps of San Diego; two brothers, James McCully of San Diego, and William McCulley of San Bernardino. She was a member of the Presbyterian church. Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 4 p.m. from the chapel of Backs, Campbell and Kaulbars mortuary, the Rev. Lewellyn of 1204 Lewellyn Ave., Anaheim, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Myrna Lee, to Victor Ruedy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Ruedy of 817 N. Helena St. He is an Anaheim postal employee, having attended Anaheim Union High school and Fullerton Junior college. Mrs. Darwin Stockwell gave the inspirational message. Mrs. Ward Erickson, Founder's Day chairman, briefed the audience on reopening of Broadway school after having been closed for several years. On September 29, 1952, Broadway again organized a P-TA unit. A highlight of each year was pointed out as each past president was honored. Past presidents present were Mrs. Robert Moore, Mrs. Grace Spielman, Mrs. Sam Morgan, Mrs. Darwin Stockwell, Mrs. Cruz Sandoval presented each lady with a corsage. Miss Adelaide Price was also an honored guest. An honorary Life Membership pin was presented to Miss E. Kate Rea after Mrs. Erickson gave an interesting account of Miss Rea's various achievements and work in nearly every youth activity in Anaheim during the past half century. The Mozart choir under the able direction of Sheldon S. Disrud had the members and guests tapping their feet while they sang, "Come, Voice, Sing," Brahm's folk songs, "The Fiddler" and "I'd Enter Your Garden;" the beloved folk song "Cindy," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." Mrs. Orlen Smith, Mrs. Cruz Sandoval, Mrs. Jolly, Mrs. McConaghy and Mrs. James Hull were named to nominating committee. Louise Montgomery, Known Here, Dies Miss Louise Montgomery, well known in Anaheim and an active member of DAR passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, in Hoag Memorial hospital after an extended illness. She resided at 2117 E. Balboa Blvd., Balboa, with a sister, Miss Gertrude Montgomery. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church, Ebell club, music Arts Assn., U.D.C. and the AAR, California Alexander Cleveland chapter. Surviving in addition to her sister, Gertrude, she leaves a brother, Tarver Montgomery of Santa Ana, and was the daugher of the late Victor Montgomery. Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, at 1:30 p.m. at Smith and Tuthill chapel in San Antonio with burial in Fairhaven cemetery. Glenn C. Potter, 33 Yrs. in Anaheim, Dies Glenn C. Potter, a resident of Anaheim for 33 years, passed away at his home at 516 W. Ampshire street on Tuesday. He was born 73 years ago in Iowa. Survivors are his wife, Dora of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Keva M. Lusk and Mrs. Ruth Woodchild, both of Anaheim; one mother, Wyman F. Potter of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Mrs. Dina McIntyre of Mass., and Mrs. Anzel Dales of Paso Robles, Calif. He was a member of White Temple Methodist church. Funeral services will be conducted by the Sheldon S. Scroggins, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Scroggins, 6492 San Marcus way, Buena Park, recently was assigned to the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. Continuing its training, the "Bayonet" division is the only U.S. Army division that has remained in Korea since the ceasefire. Private Scroggins is a gunner in Company H of the division's 17th Regiment. He entered the Army in June 1955 and completed basic training at Fort Carson, Colo. H. D. CLUB MEETS The Anaheim Home Department met with Fossie Hein, 925 W. Center St., on Tuesday morning, Feb. 28, to see a demonstration on locally grown peppers and the ways they can be used in family meals. Project leaders Eva Ter Beest and Betty McClure made enchiladas, chili relleno, sausage appetizers and a variety of pepper dips. After a share-the-cost luncheon, the Misses Charlotte Schmeltzer and Shirley Jamison from Marywood School for Girls discussed opportunities for youth and youth in the future. She was born in Nebraska and had lived 1025 W. 85th St., Los Angeles, or 17 years. Survivors are three sons, Edmond C. of Torrance, William L. San Diego and Robert F. of Anaheim; 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. NINETY YEARS YOUNG Mrs. Anna Walker celebrated her nineteenth birthday at a family dinner party at her home at 1202 E. Hampshire St., where she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. B. R. Watson for the past two years. She has six children, 17 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She is a native of Ohio who has lived in Los Angeles since 1922 before coming to Anaheim. PARTY PLANNED An annual Easter party for crippled children is being planned by the Colonial Co-eds for March 24. Chairmen have been chosen as follows: games, Susan Reed; decorations, Susan Lilly-white and Carol Ryan; baskets, Marian Taylor; and refreshments, Anne Williams. At the end of World War II supplies were being flown into China by the United States Army Air Forces at the rate of almost two tons a minute around the clock. Helena St., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Fay to Charles W. Waters, son of the Charles O. Waters' of 412 N. Olive St. A spring wedding is being planned by these young graduates of Anaheim Union High school. Sunshine Dessert 1½ cups water ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup uncooked white rice ½ cup milk ½ cup beet or cane sugar ½ teaspoon vanilla ½ pint whipping cream ½ cup frozen concentrated orange juice Put water, salt and rice in 2-quart saucepan. Bring to vigorous boil. Turn heat as low as possible. Cover saucepan with lid. Leave over this low heat for 14 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat but leave lid on 10 minutes. Immediately remove lid and stir in milk, sugar and vanilla. Cover and allow to cool. When rice has cooled, stir to make mixture creamy. Whip cream until thick. Fold rice into whipped cream. Immediately place in freezing tray. Stir frozen concentrated orange juice through rice-whipped cream mixture with circular motions to make swirls of orange juice through rice mixture. Place in freezing compartment of refrigerator until frozen. If dessert becomes too hard, remove from freezing compartment to soften slightly before serving. If desired, garnish servings with fresh orange sections. This recipe makes 12 servings. A4 - Anaheim Gazette Anaheim, Calif., Thurs. March 1, 1956 CHERRY ANGEL TORTE 1 • 10" Angel Food cake 2 • No, 2 cans red sour cherries 2 cups sugar ½ cup corn starch 1 cup heavy cream Drain off ½ cup cherry juice and mix with corn starch. Heat cherries, remaining juice and sugar to boiling point, stirring to dissolve sugar. Stir in corn starch and mixture gradually and boil until thickened, at least three minutes, stirring constantly. Cook; stirring occasionally. Cut Angel cake horizontally into four slices. Spread cherry mixture between slices, sandwich-fashion, and on top of cake.
