General Motors Builds New Gas Turbine Car General Motors has built and successfully tested a new experimental gas turbine passenger car. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette Dec. 22, 1954; Jan. 5 and 12, 1856.) P-7788 CERTIFICATE OF PARTNERSHIP FICTITIOUS NAME STATE OF CALIFORNIA) COUNTY OF ORANGE) We hereby certify that we are partners transacting business in the County of Orange, State of California, under a designation not showing the names of the persons interested as partners in such business, to-wit: TRUNITY NOVELTY CO. That the names of all the partners are: David S. Collins, residing at 1953 Los Angeles St., Anaheim, California; Marion Graaf Collins, residing at 1953 Los Angeles St., Anaheim, California; WITNESS our hands this 16th day of December, 1955. David S. Collins Marion Graaf Couns STATE OF CALIFORNIA) COUNTY OF ORANGE) On this 16 day of December, 1955, before me, the undersigned personally appeared David S. Collins and Marion Graaf Collins, known to me to be the persons whose names are subscribed to the foregoing instrument, and they acknowledged to me that they consented to my office this 16 day of December, 1955 (SEAL) Leo J. Frills Notary Public-in and for said County and State. Firebird II, President Harlow H. Curtice announced today. The Firebird II which will be shown publicly for the first time at the General Motors Motorama of 1956 in New York City's Waldorf-Astoria hotel Jan. 19-24, has been designed as a four-passenger family car for highway use. Curtice said, however, that General Motors has no plans to put it into production. He said the car's gas turbine engine "gives promise of being able to operate with substantially the same economy as present day automotive piston engines." The car was named after the original Firebird, introduced by General Motors two years ago as the first gas turbine passenger car developed and built in the United States. The original Firebird, a one-passenger car, was not built for highway use. "General Motors stylists research men and engineers developed the first Firebird car for experimental purposes to study the commercial possibilities of the gas turbine engine," Curtice said. "The Firebird II represents a report to the public on our progress in gas turbine development. "We have come a long way. The advances we have made in the last two years have been highly encouraging. "Although it is an experimental car, the Firebird II has been designed as a four-passenger family car for highway use," the GM chief said. "It has just undergone tests on our desert proving ground." December, 1954 David S. Collins Marion Grant Coins STATE OF CALIFORNIA) COUNTY OF ORANGE On this 16 day of December, 1955, before its the undersigned person and David Collins and Marion Graf Collins, known to one to be the persons whose names are subscribed to the foregoing instrument, and they acknowledged to me that they executed the same. "We have come a long way. The advances we have made in the last two years have been highly encouraging. "Although it is an experimental car, the Firebird II has been designed as a four-passenger family car for highway use," the GM chief said. "It has just undergone tests on our desert proving ground at Mesa, Ariz., and has been successfully driven on public highways." A newly developed regenerator, or heat exchanger, which recaptures more than 80 per cent of the turbine exhaust heat and uses it to raise the temperature of intake air, is the key factor in the car's improved economy of operation. Curtice said that the Firebird II body shell is made from titanium, a lightweight metal of great strength. It is the first time that titanium, which presents problems so far as welding and plating are concerned, has been used successfully in an automobile body. The styling of the Firebird II, like that of the original Firebird, was accomplished under the tion of Harley J. Earl, GM president in charge of staff. Earl has projected a sign idea of the car into ture so as to dramatize th bilities, for America's hit of tomorrow. The Firebird II gas turbine gine, chassis, and other en ing features were develop ed the GM research staff he vice-president Dr. Lawren stad. Among the General Mo visions which contributed development and success ous engineering features Firebird II are the advan gineering staff, which de its special transmission an cated many of the specia the Delco Products Division developed the car's Del air-oil suspension system.
