Firebird II, President Harlow H. Curtice announced today.
The Firebird II which will be shown publicly for the first time at the General Motors Motorama of 1956 in New York City's Waldorf-Astoria hotel Jan. 19-24, has been designed as a four-passenger family car for highway use. Curtice said, however, that General Motors has no plans to put it into production.
He said the car's gas turbine engine "gives promise of being able to operate with substantially the same economy as present day automotive piston engines."
The car was named after the original Firebird, introduced by General Motors two years ago as the first gas turbine passenger car developed and built in the United States. The original Firebird, a one-passenger car, was not built for highway use.
"General Motors stylists research men and engineers developed the first Firebird car for experimental purposes to study the commercial possibilities of the gas turbine engine," Curtice said. "The Firebird II represents a report to the public on our progress in gas turbine development.
"We have come a long way. The advances we have made in the last two years have been highly encouraging.
"Although it is an experimental car, the Firebird II has been designed as a four-passenger family car for highway use," the GM chief said. "It has just undergone tests on our desert proving ground."

Firebird II represents a report to
the public on our progress in gas turbine development.
"We have come a long way. The advances we have made in the last two years have been highly encouraging.
"Although it is an experimental car, the Firebird II has been designed as a four-passenger family car for highway use," the GM chief said. "It has just undergone tests on our desert proving ground at Mesa, Ariz., and has been successfully driven on public highways."
A newly developed regenerator,
or heat exchanger, which recaptures more than 80 per cent of the turbine exhaust heat and uses it to raise the temperature of intake air, is the key factor in the car's improved economy of operation.
Curtice said that the Firebird II body shell is made from titanium, a lightweight metal of great strength. It is the first time that titanium, which presents problems so far as welding and plating are concerned, has been used successfully in an automobile body.
The styling of the Firebird II, like that of the original Firebird,
was accomplished under the tion of Harley J. Earl, GM president in charge of staff. Earl has projected a sign idea of the car into ture so as to dramatize th bilities, for America's hit of tomorrow.
The Firebird II gas turbine gine, chassis, and other en ing features were develop ed the GM research staff he vice-president Dr. Lawren stad.
Among the General Mo visions which contributed development and success ous engineering features Firebird II are the advan gineering staff, which de its special transmission an cated many of the specia the Delco Products Division developed the car's Del air-oil suspension system.

What would you do with $4,000?
Start Payroll Savings with $7.50 today and have over $4,000 in 1965
What would you do with your $4,000?
Spend it on a home of your own?
Your child’s college education? Go in business for yourself? All of those things cost money, more money than most of us have now. But there’s no reason why any of us can’t get the money if we save regularly and invest wisely.
The easiest time to save is now — when you’re earning more than ever before. And the surest way to save is through the Payroll Savings Plan. Then your saving and how your money will grow! Say you sign up for $7.50 a week through the Payroll Savings Plan where you work. In 5 years you’ll have $2,053. In 9 years and 8 months — $4,277. And in less than 20 years — $10,313!
And the earlier you start the less you need to save each month. Let’s say you’re 45 and you start investing $37.50 a month in Savings Bonds. At 65 you’ll have a retirement fund of $12,000. Another man is 55 but invests $75 a month in Bonds. At 65 he will have $10,000. Both of you

The easiest time to save is now — when you’re earning more than ever before. And the surest way to save is through the Payroll Savings Plan. Then your saving is done for you automatically. What an advantage that is! Once you tell your pay office how much you want to save each payday, you can relax and know that everything is being taken care of. Your money goes regularly into United States Series E Savings Bonds, one of the safest, surest investments in the world.
Now is the time to save more — and invest more in U.S. Savings Bonds!
has accomplished under the direction of Harley J. Earl, GM vice-president in charge of styling staff. Earl has projected the design idea of the car into the future so as to dramatize the possibilities for America's highways I tomorrow.
The Firebird II gas turbine engine, chassis, and other engineering features were developed by the GM research staff headed by vice-president Dr. Lawrence Haftad.
Among the General Motors divisions which contributed to the development and success of various engineering features of the Firebird II are the advanced engineering staff, which developed its special transmission and fabricated many of the special parts, the Delco Products Division, which developed the car's Delco-matic air-oil suspension system, the Delco-Remy division, responsible for the electrical system, Moraine Products Division, maker of the car's new all-metal turbo-X brakes, Saginaw steering gear division, key group in perfecting the Firebird's hydraulic steering system, and Harrison Radiator Division, which provided the car's elaborate air conditioning unit.
Curtice said that complete details of Firebird II styling and engineering features will be announced later.
The sugar beet is extensively grown in Europe and in the western and northern states of the United States.
