Anaheim Youth To Participate in Rocket Contest
Airman First Class Charles J. Flynn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Flynn of 1117 Pearl St., Anaheim, is spending September in Yuma, Ariz., as a member of the Eastern Air Defense Forde Rocketry Team, which is preparing for competition in the world-wide, USAF rocketry meet to be held at Yuma the first week in October.
Airman Flynn, a radar mechanic for the 96th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at New Castle airport, Wilmington, Del., arrived at Yuma last month to participate in the 1955 Eastern Air Defense Force Rocketry Shoot-Off (Aug. 16 to 22) as a member of the 26th Air Division (defense) team.
Airman Flynn graduated from Anaheim Union High school before enlisting in the Air Force on August 1, 1952.

LAW IN ACTION
JURORS
We know our rights: Freedom of speech, press, religion and assembly; the right to ask our government to undo a wrong, the right to a fair and prompt trial, and so on.
But what about our duties? Did you know that the government could call on you to serve in many ways, often without pay if need be—on a jury; as a sheriff's posse; to fight fire, pestilence, and help out in a wreck or flood, etc.
For most such things we now hire people. But sooner or later each citizen, of sound mind and good character who can read and write English, may be called to serve on a jury.
California exempts certain people from jury duty. Civil and military officers on active duty for the state or the United States, ministers, physicians, dentists, lawyers, newspaper publishers, teachers, firemen, some forestry workers and other people whose work for the public might impair their jury service.
The county clerk or jury commissioner may ask the judges to excuse some because of work and health.
As a rule the names left go in a box are shaken up, and the number currently needed are drawn out by lot. Others are called the same way later as needed. In large counties each department of a trial court may have a separate panel of prospective jurors.
The sheriff summons a new juror to appear for his first day in court. The judge tells him when to come again.
The county pays the jurors in criminal cases. In civil suits, the litigants pay—but only for twelve actual jurors. The county pays the rest of those who come in for their day's appearance.
A juror gets $3 a day, plus 2 cents a mile the first day, only for one way from home. The jurors pay the rest of their own travel costs. No juror gets richest but he serves one of the highest purposes of a nation—the administration of justice.
NOTE: The State Bar of California offers this column for your information so that you may know more about how to act under our laws.

PHILHARMONIC FASHION SHOW
WAS SUCCESS
Orchid chrysanthemums against the pink and green decor of the Balboa Bay club created a festive atmosphere for the Orange County Philharmonic society's sparkling "Nearly New Fashion Show," which earlier this week netted over $1500 toward the symphony's society budget goal of $50,000 for its 1955-56 concert season.
Nearly 600 women from many areas of the county, Los Angeles and other parts of the state and country gathered at the club for the luncheon and unusual style show which was followed later by the sale of the many fashion items which had been donated by shops and individuals. These ranged from original designers' models, handsome furs and many elegant dresses to small things such as handbags, collars and costume.

Competition to Open for Air Academy
Congressman James B. Utt announced that competitions will soon be opened for young men desiring to enter the United States Air Force Academy. Candidates must be at least 17 years of age, but younger than 22 on July 1, 1956.
The competitions are being held for the second class of the Academy to which some 300 cadets will be admitted in July, 1956. Utt stated that 16 cadets may be selected from California, and that he will be able to nominate 10 men from his district to compete in the examinations.
In order to qualify to take competitive examinations for appointment as a cadet, a candidate must obtain a nomination from his Congressman or one of the other authorized sources.
Utt urged young men in the 28th Congressional District who feel eligible and desire to compete in the competition to write him at 322 Old House Office Building, Washington, D.C., requesting that they be nominated. These letters should give the candidate's full name and address, date of birth, his parents' name and address, his high school and the date he graduated or will graduate; the college he has attended, if any; his height and weight; his approximated standing in his class; and his extra-curricular activities, such...
