IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of The Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago... July — 1890 A project which General Phineas Banning has had in contemplation for some time was begun yesterday in Wilmington. It is the extension of the railroad wharf by a system of pillings across the shallow channel and down Mormon Island to a point at which sufficient depth of water can be secured for vessels to tie up. We are not informed of the exact locality where it is proposed to establish the new landing or dock but believe it is to be up the land and diagonally across from Timm's Landing where a clear depth of water is secured three feet greater than on the bar at the entrance to the harbor. This improvement when completed will dispense with the lighterage system now in use and our merchants and shipppers as well as all who have traveled in and out of the port need not be told that this will be an unmixed blessing. A cablegram from London to Dr. Ellis on last Saturday announced the safe arrival in that city of Dr. R. A. Ferguson. Mr. H. L. Paty was riding on hornback in the Santiago canyon a few days ago, in the rear of his team and amusing himself. 50 Years Ago... July 1905 A further extension of the line of the Pacific Electric railway system some forty miles down the coast to Oceanside, it is learned is one of the plans for the greater development of Southern California which H. E. Huntington will make effective soon after his return from New York. He has recently purchased the rancho Paula near Oceanside and secured options on an aggregate of 75,000 acres of other property in the vicinity. Joseph Helmsen has purchased the Water Company's lot on Claudina street adjoining his residence, upon which the company intended erecting a warehouse. The company will build a warehouse elsewhere. Miss Ethel Chapman, daughter of C. C. Chapman of Fullerton, was thrown from her buggy in a runaway accident in that city, Monday. She sustained serious bruises but no permanent injury is anticipated. The explosion of the Bennington's boiler in San Diego harbor, whereby sixty were killed outright and fifty injured, furnishes one of the most deploreable occurrences in the annals of the Ameri- Symphony Music Planned at Irvine Park this Summer Outdoor music under the stars at the Irvine Bowl is the first event being scheduled by the Orange County Philharmonic society for its 1955-56 season, according to Karen Margreta Bruninger, executive director. This first concert of the group's new series will be held in Laguna Beach on Saturday night, Aug. 27, at 8:30 o'clock, as one of the final events of the summer at Orange county's own outdoor Bowl, after the close of Laguna nationally known Festival of Arts. Admission will again be free. A. Ferguson. Mr. H. L. Paty was riding on horseback in the Santiago canyon a few days ago, in the rear of his team, and amusing himself by shooting rabbits with his revolver. He was keeping such a sharp outlook for game that he did not see a large rattlesnake which lay called up in the middle of the road. The first intimation he had of its presence was a warning rattle. He had just time to raise his foot from the stirrup before the snake darted forward and imbedded its fangs in the stirrup leather. Mr. Paty killed the snake and found it to be one of the largest of its species. Its body was as thick as a man's leg. Attention is called to the card of Mr. A. T. Julius Voight whose private school where German, French, Drawing, Mathematics and all branches of a high school course are taught. There is also a school of gymnastics and fencing for boys and callisthenics for girls, meeting twice a week in the old school house. The Riverside cannery is now in full operation and gives employment to 80 persons. It puts up four tons of fruit per day. It will interest the people of Anaheim to know that apricots are much caught after by canning establishments. The San Jose canneries pay 5 cents per pound for that fruit and the Riverside cannery pays 21 cents per pound. Even at the latter price is is estimated that an acre of apricot trees (120) in full bearing would yield an income of $3000. Apricots grow finely in this locality and the orchards of the future should have a good sized area set apart for that fruit. Mr. Daniel Kraemer has just headed 300 acres of Chevalier barley and rye which promises to the largest yield ever made on this farm famous for heavy crops. Mr. Kraemer is a firm believer in The explosion of the Bennington's boiler in San Diego harbor, whereby sixty were killed outright and fifty injured, furnishes one of the most deploreble occurrences in the annals of the American Navy. The blowing up of the Maine provoked war and vengeance followed first at Manila bay and Santiago harbor. The Bennington disaster bows the head of the nation in deepest sorrow. The fact that two seamen by the name of Chambers, were killed in the Bennington disaster, led to the report that John Chambers, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Chambers of this city had lost his life in the wreck of the vessel. This is an error. Young Chambers is at Mare Island and was not a member of the Bennington's crew. He is aged 19 and has been three years in the Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Will Lawrence came in this week from Cochise, A. T., and will spend a few weeks visiting relatives here. They may extend their trip to the Portland Fair before returning to the territory. Mrs. Julius Schneider entertained the Apollo club on Friday. Among those present who participated in the delightful program were: Mrs. Wm. Koenig, Mrs. R. Schellens, Mrs. M. Storm, Mrs. R. B. Clemens, Miss Sophie Rimpau, Miss Marie Rimpau, Miss Theresa Fay, Miss Hettie Weisel and Mrs. Schneider. Robin Adair Scott came over from Long Beach on Saturday evening, to attend the Minstrel show and lead the society cake walk at the subsequent hop. Scotty wears eye-glasses now, has abandoned the printing business and devotes his attention to sea-side realty. Misses Zelma and Georgie Bailey arrived several days ago from Phoenix, A. T., and will spend some weeks visiting relatives in this city. The new super Anaheim Drive In theatre will take the position of Flagship of the Aladdin chain with its two thousand car capacity its diversified children's playground of swings, slides, men go round, sand boxes, chute to chutes and other innovations that will keep the small fry hap and contented until show time. The Anaheim super Snack Bar is a virtual large sized restaurant serving rapid quick order snacks luncheons, from hot Plaza pie, mallies, hot dogs griddle orders and picnic set-ups for the whole family. A staff of over twenty employees for the snack bar ensures hasty service to allow trans ample time to enjoy the intermission, Cliff Getter, residing general manager reports. Other innovations of the hanaim drive-in are the latest improvements in sound project with both Vista Vision and Omascope systems. Hi-Fi in a receivers for the patrons cars well as the installation of Pacific Iron and Steel's Non-GT Tower screen which measures feet by 55 feet allowing per visibility no matter what part the Anaheim park the patrons places his car. Top officials of the Aladdin chain spearheaded by Harry Popkin, Jack Y. Berman, I. H. man, Kenneth N. Chantry, Jude Tuchler and Murray Odel attend the Aug. 3 premiere. Civic leaders of Anaheim, lerton, Orange and Santa Ana also expected to the gala oing whih will also have per alities of Screen and Radio help open this new added mark of entertainment. An active personnel of ovel attaches will help make the Anaheim super drive-in ther a smooth operation, according to the resident general manager Cliff Getter. Of a retail dealers association similar to those in existin other locations, and will some interesting information fore a meeting of business Mr. Daniel Kraemer has just headed 300 acres of Chevallier barley and rye which promises to the largest yield ever made on this farm famous for heavy crops. Mr. Kraemer is a firm believer in early sowing and we notice that the number of people who hold that view—are increasing of late. It has been suggested, in view of the frequent runaways in town of late, that an ordinance should be passed compelling the hitching of teams within the corporate limits. The lives of children are in constant peril from runaway teams. About noon on Wednesday a fire of considerable magnitude got started in the grass and brush about two miles southeast of town. The house of Mr. R. D. Curtis was in great danger and he sent to town for help. The fire bell rummed a number of firemen who went to the scene of the conflagration in wagons and soon subdued the flames. The Union Brass band is composed of the following gentlemen: N. A. Bittner, E flat cornet; R.H. Gilman, B flat solo; W. Kroeger, B flat cornet; O. Zeyn, E flat alto; A. Bittner, 1st tenor; H. Hussman; B flat cornet; Others are Mel Greenleaf, T. D. Williamson, M. A. Yeornell and C. E. Rubottom. The six first named are residents of Anaheim and the latter four of Santa Ana. Prof. Finck is their instructor. Misses Zelma and Georgie Bailey arrived several days ago from Phoenix, A. T., and will spend some weeks visiting relatives in this city. Oscar Renner and family left on Tuesday for an outing at San Juan Hot Springs. On Sunday afternoon and evening next, at Athletic Park the celebrated Sioux Indians baseball team will play the Olindas. Two games will be played, the afternoon game at 3:30, the evening game at 8 o'clock. The evening game will be played under electric lights. Society's orchestra will again be under the leadership of its permanent conductor, Frieda Belinfante. Miss Belinfante has recently been in Holland, where she has had conducting engagements and where she has visited her family. She returns to the Southland this week, however, in order to get rehearsals underway for the forthcoming performance. Last year's concert at the Irvine Bowl was an outstanding success, and the Bowl at that time was filled almost to capacity. It is anicipated that its fine acoustics and delightful setting will once again draw a large crowd of both natives and summer visitors. Following the outdoor event planned for Laguna, the Society will schedule indoor concerts through the winter season in various communities of the county where outdoor facilities are available, such as Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Fullerton and Santa Ana.
