Vets To Benefit By Revision In State Home Law
Many war veterans will soon be eligible for "Cal-Vet" farm or home financing and educational assistance whose applications may once have been rejected because they hadn't served at least 90 days in wartime. This explanation of a new state law recently signed by Governor Knight was offered by Ben Liebermann, Orange county veterans service officer.
The effect of the new measure (chapter 404 of the 1955 statutes) is to all 89 days to the beginning and 89 days to the end of the World War II and Korea eligibility periods.
It provides that a veteran qualifies for benefits if any portion—even one day—of his minimum 90 consecutive days of active duty was on or after Dec. 7, 1941, and prior to Jan. 1, 1947, or on or after June 27, 1950 and Prior to Jan. 31, 1955.
The law does not take effect until Sept. 7 — 90 days after the legislative session. However, veterans may apply for reconsideration now and obtain certificates of eligibility as soon as the law becomes effective.
Under the new act a person who entered service on the January 30 cutoff date this year would become an eligible Korean veteran if he served 90 days consecutively from then on, or a person discharged on Dec. 7, 1941, becomes an eligible World War II veteran if he ended at least 90 days' continuous service on that date.
The eligibility is good for farm or home financing and up to $1000 in state educational assistance to veterans who were born in California or entered military service as state residents, and are otherwise qualified.

Chispa Chapter Adjourns for Summer Vacation
Side shows and fun booths decorated the Masonic Temple Tuesday night, when Chispa Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star took a circus theme to ring down the curtain for summer vacation.
Under the leadership of Margaret Peterson and Everett Granere, Worthy Matron and Patron, members have enjoyed outstanding meetings. Among the most recent was the Golden Jubilee when members who had celebrated Golden Wedding Anniversaries were honored. Among those feted were Vera and Earl Baum, Grace and William Houts, Inez Daniels, Lottie Sheppard, Ottie Nipper and Anna Lee.
A special evening of fellowship was enjoyed by all at the Chapter's recent birthday party when twelve tables, one for each month of the year, were decorated in a unique manner by the appointive officers with a decorated cake centering each table.
The Chapter will be dark during July and August. Regular programs will begin again on September 13 when vacation reveries will highlight the meeting.
The newly formed Ohio State club of Orange county will hold a pot luck supper meeting on Friday, July 22, at the Bowling on the Green Clubhouse, Santiago Park, Santa Ana. Residents and former residents of Ohio are cordially invited to attend this and the interesting program to follow.
LOOK: NO HANDS! WITH NEW DEVICE FOR TELEPHONES
You don't need a special pair of glasses to enjoy a new dimension in telephoning. Pacific Telephone has come up with a remarkable new instrument that enables the user to talk without having to touch or lift the handset.
With the new instrument the lady of the house can carry on a telephone conversation while both hands are left free to prepare a meal, wash dishes or sew.
All this is accomplished by merely pushing a button at the start of a call.
The new set looks pretty much like a conventional telephone—same size and shape, but with a couple of gadgets added for the speakerphone feature.
A tiny microphone and three plastic buttons are mounted in the base of the instrument. One button controls the volume of the other party's voice coming over a nearby two by three-inch loudspeaker.
The other buttons turn on or off the "hands free" feature so that the telephone may be used in the normal manner if privacy is desired.
With the new telephone the whole family can join in on local calls—or family reunions on long distance calls. Invalids or the physically handicapped can bene-
Seeds Painted To Preview Color
An ingenious grower of flower garden seeds has developed a means of showing garden-makers exactly what color flowers each seed will produce. This enables garden-planners to work out their color schemes in advance and to be sure they will have exactly what they want at blooming time.
To prepare them, the seeds are poured into a mixer containing powder of the color that the flowers will be. The powder-combined with a plant food and soil conditioner—dissolves when the seed is planted.
The addition of stakes, painted the color of the flowers-to-come, can add a bright note prior to blossom time.

The floribunda is the tallest growing variety, reaching eight feet with carmine-purple flowers. Schumannii, deciduous while the rest are evergreen, blooms in lavender-pink flowers.

Pittosporum Is Widely Planted
Good evergreen selections can be found in the large Pittosporum family. The Japanese is the most widely planted species. It offers dark green foliage, fragrant creamy-white flowers and brownish fruits.
One of the most useful shrubs in this species is the Pittosporim tobira variegata. Its gray-green leaves are outlined in white and for this reason the shrub is fine for lightening dark areas of your yard.
Good for a small garden, the Rock Pittosporum has yellow-green leaves and pale yellow flowers and grows rather low.

Peat Moss Has Numerous Uses
Peat moss literally gives soil new life—by adding pure, weed-free, spongy 97 per cent organic vegetable matter. It opens the soil, admitting vital air and moisture and acts as a reservoir for plant food, releasing it to roots as needed.
Thus, it insures maximum return from seed fertilizer and time invested.
