ANAHEIM GAZETTE, Page 3 INDUSTRIAL SECTION DIXIE CUPS FILL NEED FOR GERM-FREE CONTAINER Dixie Cups were first developed to fill the need for a clean, pure drink of water in public places. In 1908, Dr. Thomas Crumbline of the Kansas State Board of Health examined a number of public glasses under the microscope and found something besides dirt. He found disease germs in profusion. About the same time, Professor Alvin Davison of the Department of Biology of Lafayette college, Easton, Pa., was finding similar conditions in cups he collected from the public schools in Easton. These findings, and others of similar nature, were widely reported and confirmed by public health officers throughout the country. Soon State Boards of Health began to forbid the use of unwashed and unsterilized drinking receptacles in public places. this improved cup a new name, and the name Health Kup gave way to the more interesting name "Dixie Cups." This new name was an instant hit. The passing years have proved it an apt choice. Health Protection The paper cup was soon winning recognition as a means of protecting health. The original factory space on 16th Street, New York City, became too small to house the growing business and the company moved to larger quarters at 200 West 19th Street. The company moved from New York City to Easton in 1921. Easton offered the advantage of being near the company's largest markets and in clean, healthful environment. Also important was the availability of an excellent body of working people. A model plant was erected and the ground landscaped. This plant has recently completed its thirteenth addition. In the twenties, the company continued its growth. In 1924, a new merchandising plan helped the name Dixie Cup come into the cone-shaped paper cup was originated by David F. Curtin, about 1912, when he began to wonder whether an inexpensive paper cup would not be the solution to the problem of sanitation and burdensome dishwashing at soda fountains. Curtin tested the demand for such paper cups in various sections of the country. His employers, Messrs. Peter T. Potts and William G. Potts, found his report on the survey favorable and began the making of cup machinery in 1913. In the spring of the following year shipments were being made from the factory. Steady Progress Progressing steadily, by the time World War I ended, these cups were to be found at soda fountains in all parts of the United States. In 1925, the Vortex Cu Company extended its activities into the water cup field, absorbing the former Burt Company, and subsequently extended the use of cone-type cups into other fields. Following the merger with the company continued th Experiments Made Experiments were made with methods of making paper cups in quantity to fill the need for a safe, individual drinking cup. The first paper cups produced about 1908 were destined to prove the vanguard of a new industry. Hugh Moore, who founded the company and is now chairman of the finance committee, and associates of those early founding days envisioned their product as a distinct contribution to safeguarding the public health. About 1910 the trade name "Health Kups" was given to these first individual paper cups, and the first semi-automatic machinery was designed for their production. In 1916 the construction of the cups was improved to include the first rolled brim. A few years later it was considered wise to give Easton offered the advantage of being near the company's largest markets and in clean, healthful environment. Also important was the availability of an excellent body of working people. A model plant was erected and the ground landscaped. This plant has recently completed its thirteenth addition. In the twenties, the company continued its growth. In 1924, a new merchandising plan helped the name Dixie Cup come into greater prominence. This was the now famous Ice Cream Dixie—a nickel portion of ice cream in a Dixie Cup—which received advertising in magazines and on the radio. Pay Rolls Continue During the depression of the thirties the company payrolls continued without interruption. Unlike many plants in the nation that closed their doors, the Dixie plant continued to hum with activity. An able and farsighted management brought about the development of new markets, and the production of cups and containers became more diversified to meet the demand. In 1935, the Individual Drinking Cup company, makers of flat-bottom cups, was merged with the Vortex Cup Company of Chicago, which was the leader in the field of cone-shaped cups. The idea of E. A. Bastanchury Water Co. 35 Years Old Bastanchury Water Company, the oldest bottle water company in Orange County, was started by the family in 1920 and since that time, has had the same source of supply, wells fed by natural springs.
