ANAHEIM GAZETTE Anaheim, Calif., Thursday, March 31, 1958 "Recovery Act" for Aid to the Aged Is Explained About one out of every ten people on Orange county's aged aid rolls could be expected to choose to go off—and the security of the nine who would remain would be vastly improved—if the legislature enact a recovery act this session, California Taxpayers' association said today. Experience in other states, most recently in Montana, shows that when a recovery clause is enacted about 10 per cent of the people on the aged aid rolls go off. They go off because they are not willing to accept the proviso that the county can recover aid given them from their estates after their death and the death of their spouse, the association explained. "Such people obviously are not in genuine need of aid," the association declared. Drop of 10 per cent in the aged aid rolls in the county would mean a savings of about $451,000 a year in aid payments—and a far healthier situation for the people who are in real need of public assistance. In January of this year, the association pointed out, there were 5,663 people on the aged aid rolls of the county. With average aid per person at $66.37, total aid for the month was $375,865, or at the rate of $4,510,000 for a year. Anaheim YLI Prepares Easter Gifts for Shut-ins Work is progressing on 200 Easter baskets to be distributed to elderly patients and children at the Orange County hospital by members of the Anaheim Young Ladies Institute. According to project chairman, Mrs. Charles Strickroth, the baskets are being filled with colored eggs, home made cookies and small gifts, and will be ready for distribution on the Saturday before Easter. This is the largest number of baskets yet attempted. aid rolls in the county would mean a savings of about $451,000 a year in aid payments—and a far healthier situation for the people who are in real need of public assistance. Coliseum Relays Set for May 20 A 14-event program highlighted by the "Miracle Mile," the four U.S. collegiate relay championships and promising 440 and 880 races has been scheduled for the 1955 Los Angeles Coliseum Relays on Friday evening, May 20. W. O. Hunter, general chairman of the big 15th annual Coliseum Relays carnival, announced today that the schedule of events had been sent out to 400 colleges and universities around the nation, inviting them to submit championship relay teams and individuals for possible invitation to the Relays. Again this year the Relays, sponsored by the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games, will be held in conjunction with the Los Angeles City High School Championships. The 440 and 880, mile and two-mile relays will again bring together the winners of the major relay titles around the country for the U.S. collegiate championship races. Hiway Patrol Head Decries Appalling Traffic Accidents California traffic accidents costs last year, equaled a lass of $26.50 for every man, woman and child in the state, the California Highway Patrol has announced. Based on a National Safety Council formula which computes costs of all fatal, injury, and property damage accidents at the rate of $110,000.00 loss per traffic death, the total dollar loss for 1954 came to $341,440,000.00. Patrol Commissioner B. R. Caldwell explained that the staggering cost of a grisly traffic toll including economic loss suffered as a result of 3,104 dead and 108,265 injured in 180,186 traffic accidents.
