Population of Orange County to Hit 346,500 by Jan. 1, 1955; 16% Increase Population of Orange county will be 346,500 by Jan. 1, 1955, up 16 per cent from January/1954, and up 60.3 per cent from 1950 census figure, California Taxpayers' association estimated today. Year by year trend of population in the county since the 216,224 shown by the 1950 census is as follows: January, 1951, 228,000; Orangethorpe PTA Has Meeting with Christmas Theme The Orangethorpe P-TA Board held its Christmas meeting Dec. 21 at the home of Mrs. M. Kingston at 1473 W. Gage. Mrs. Vernon Thompson, secretary, read the minutes and they were approved by the board. Mrs. Stanley McCartney, president, announced that the next Orangethorpe P-TA meeting will be held at the new Boys' club in Fullerton on Jan. 4. All parents are urged to attend and to inspect the facilities available at the club. There will be a registrar to register new voters in the district. Summer recreation for those in the area was discussed and will be reported on in January. Mrs. Russell Harman reported that there are now 409 P-TA members in Orangethorpe. The county is one of 19 in California which show both a bigger increase since the 1950 census than the 21.2 per cent state-wide average growth and a bigger increase during 1954 than the 3.7 per cent state-wide average gain. The counties in this group are: Alpine, Del Norte, Los Angeles, Marin, Mendocino, Mono, Napa, Orange, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Shasta, Sierra, Trinity, Ventura, and Yolo. For other Southern California counties, population estimates for January, 1955, relative changes since the census and during 1954 were: Imperial county, estimate for January, 1955, 69,390; up 10.2 per cent from the 1950 census and down 2.4 per cent during 1954. Kern county, estimate for January 1955, 252,600; up 10.6 per cent from the 1950 census and up 2.6 per cent during 1954. Los Angeles county, estimate for January, 1955, 5,211,600; up 25.5 per cent from the 1950 census and up 4.1 per cent during 1954. Riverside county, estimate for January, 1955, 229,100; up 34.7 per cent from the 1950 census and up 4.2 per cent during 1954. Brazil Is Topic of Public Discussion "Brazil" will be the topic of an illustrated lecture to be presented by Karl Robinson on the Fullerton Public Forum, Tuesday, Jan. 6, in the high school auditorium. This is a film story of the Brazilian people, America's largest South American neighbor and will take viewers to the headquarters of the mighty Amazon river—into the Amazon jungle—and through the fabulous city of Rio de Janeiro. This is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with our "neighbors," their country and their customs. The forum program, as usual, will be presented in the Fullerton Union High school auditorium, beginning at 7:30 p.m. John N. At its present rate of growth, California's population will top 13,000,000 shortly before the midpoint of 1955, the Taxpayers' association predicted. Least-populated county in California is Alpine, with an estimated population as of January 1, 1955, of 340. New aerosol-dispensed colognes and perfumes are never exposed to air until used, so there is no loss or change of fragrance as occurs when the stopper is pulled from an ordinary perfume bottle. A chemical process, using "Quilon" chrome complex, now produces suede leather garments that can be dry cleaned without loss of texture, flexibility, or pliability, and with no change of color. Scientists believe the greatest reservoir of opportunities for new jobs and one of the strongest factors for stabilizing production in the future lie in industrial research and laboratories and their staffs. Du Pont's new "Mylar" polyester film, just coming into commercial production, has already been tested successfully for such purposes as insulation, pressure sensitive and magnetic recording tapes; industrial and decorative laminations; metallic yarn for textiles; and metalized film for shoes, handbags and other apparel.
