Citrus Quality Needs Improving "A more aggressive field program to improve production and quality of citrus fruits in California is an absolute necessity," declared A. L. Chandler, field service manager, Mutual Orange Distributors, at the 49th annual meeting of the marketing cooperative held in Redlands, Nov. 22. "Our citrus acreage is being reduced rapidly by subdivision but on the remaining acres we can, and must, produce more and better fruit," he stated. "Many problems are involved in citrus production—various tree diseases to eliminate, problems of irrigation and water shortage to be solved," said Chandler, "but we are told, only 20 per cent of the groves in one of the largest citrus-producing areas in the State use zinc or other nutritional sprays. Since there is no doubt that these nutritional sprays are extremely effective and in most citrus soils are necessary for good foliage and production, it seems" LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. "Many problems are involved in citrus production—various tree diseases to eliminate, problems of irrigation and water shortage to be solved," said Chandler, "but we are told, only 20 per cent of the groves in one of the largest citrus-producing areas in the State use zinc or other nutritional sprays. Since there is no doubt that these nutritional sprays are extremely effective and in most citrus soils are necessary for good foliage and production, it seems that this phase of citriculture in California has been neglected. "A combination of urea, zinc, and manganese sulphate applied in the spring has been effective in producing vigorous foliage in most cases. This is just one example of a practice that should have more universal use. Another excellent practice is the use of 2,4-D and other growth regulators to increase tree vigor where small fruit is a problem. This material, however, has been effective only where sufficient water is available," he stated. "These are just some examples of what can be done to improve the condition of the California citrus industry." Chandler concluded, "and the industry should resolve to adopt a better and more vigorous cultural program."
