OBLONG VIEWS (From an Egg-Shaped Head) BY WALDO HUNTER, P.S.B. Seeing as how this is National Letter Writing Week, let's just compose a few quickies for practice. It is always good to start off with a letter to the President: Dear Ike: Well, I still say you were a darn good general. Dear Miss Monroe: You shouldn't have done it. So many teen age girls figure your figure is the epitome of the apex. They strive to copy you. Old Joe Dimaggio, too, was a hero in the eyes of the rising male generation. Great baseball player, and all that sort of stuff. Now the two of you, in glaring headlines and shrill radio and TV newscasts, throw marriage to the winds. How are the teen-agers to heed the age-old precept that holy wedlock is holy when people like you flaunt it so callously? Dear Mr. Dimaggio: Well, good luck on your trip back to the minor league. Dear Mr. Postmaster: Will you caution your mailman not to walk on my inthcansus? We have had it planted only three weeks now, and the heavy tread of your vassal has done it no good. The fact that he usually tromps on it while in hasty retreat from my wild dog has absolutely no bearing on the case. Dear Congressman: I have a lot of gripes to register with you, but sometimes I wonder if it would do either of us any good. Chest Drive Hits Halfway Mark in $38,000 Campaign With a little more than two weeks remaining before deadline shuts down the drive, Anaheim Community Chest workers have collected at least $22,227, spokesmen said this week. This figure represents 58 percent of the total $38,000 set as a goal for the Red Feather campaign. Leading in reports this year, according to Mrs. R. W. Marvin, chest secretary, are volunteers from industrial division. Top donations however are coming from the householder in contrast to previous years when the drive depended heavily on individual, large-scale donors, she said. Deadline for the campaign is October 22. Catholic Women To Convene Oct. 20 The annual conference of the Los Angeles Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women will be on Oct. 20 in the Ambassador hotel, L. A. The Conference will be preceded by Mass at 8:30 at St. Masla Church, Wilshire and Harvard. "The Family, Strength of the Nation," is the topic of the panel scheduled for the morning session. His Excellency, Bishop Dwyer of Reno, will be luncheon speaker. Special guest will be His Eminence James Francis Cardinal McIntyre of Los Angeles. Parish chairmen will send lunch-eon reservations to Mrs. Leist of Glendale, Luncheon tickets are $4.00, and check or M.O. must acce Dear Congressman: I have a lot of gripes to register with you, but sometimes I wonder if it would do either of us any good. I have it on fairly substantial authority that you know how to read, and this helps. Could you make a note to tell the Anaheim postmaster to tell his mailman to quit trampling my inthcansus? This may seem a trivial matter to one in your exalted position, but have you ever had anyone stomp on your inthcansus? Dear Evelyn: Oh no! Not that! Dear Chief of Police: I want to register a complaint with your department, and at the outset I would remind you that my wife knows a fellow who once said hello to the mayor. One of your policemen was outrageously attentive to duty the other evening. In the first place, I was only driving on the left side of the double white line, intending to negotiate a left-hand turn after a few blocks. And in the second place, he was disgruntled because I had only one operative headlight. The fact that I had left my drivers' license at home in an old golf bag is a matter of incidental intelligence, but your man scolded me for it. This hurt, for up until this time I hadn't been scolded since an excitable orange rancher out on Katella took issue with me for mangling his spray-rig while executing a too-tight turn. He had it parked only a scant 50 feet off the road. Then, too, your boy said my brakes weren't fin very good shape, which they weren't. What really burns me is that I can get the car fixed, but not the ticket. Mrs. Helen Heffron Mrs. Helen L. Heffron passed away at the Chapman House Rest Home, September 28, after a long illness.
