Kwikset Locks, Anaheim’s First Major Industry, Has
Kwikset Locks, Inc., for several years has been one of the nation's leading lockset manufacturers. In eastern Orange County the company has been a leader in county life.

Some ents were apprehensive about try which might bring along labor unrest, traffic prob- and indifference to the wel- of the community.
Old Schoepe, president of set, resolved that Kwikset illustrate the true value of full-run industry—how it fits the life and economy of the through the friendly integration of Kwikset into the community, industrialization became a desirable thing in Anaheim. Kwikset paid high wages which put more purchasing power into the communities where the employees live. Local business began to feel the increased business activity and was able to begin expansion of goods and services, a factor of value to the entire area. People brought into the area by Kwikset joined civic group, churches, and social groups. New ideas and new energy came with them.
The company gave strong support to efforts to curb smog, to traffic problems, school expansion, inadequate housing, and through the added tax revenue, money was put into local governmental agencies.
Kwikset not only has been a wage-leader in its field, but its employee "benefits" are famous throughout the nation. Among "extra" benefits provided employees by Kwikset are quarterly cash profit-sharing, deferred profit-sharing (a retirement plan), incentive wage program (added wages for added ability and production), company paid pensions (upon retirement), cost of living wage increases, paid vacations, paid holidays, hospital and surgical insurance, group life insurance, Credit Union, recreation program including a modern mountain resort available to employees and their families free, service clubs, and a safety program which includes a modern first aid department.
Since Kwikset was organized in 1946, it has sold more than 20,000,000 of its "400" line of locksets for the booming housing construction in the nation. Since Kwikset was organized in 1946, it has sold more than 20,000,000 of its "400" line of locksets for the booming housing construction in the nation. (A lockset is the knobs and mechanisms which lock and latch your doors.) The Kwikset "400" line is especially suited to tact and other moderately priced housing. In addition, the company produces its "600" line of larger and sturdier lockset for more expensive homes and business uses.
To maintain the fast acceleration of the growing company, it was good business for Kwikset to expand into non-housing fields with products which could be built by utilizing the Kwikset know-how in metallurgy, tool & die making, die casting, plating, and polishing.
As soon as the company was entrenched solidly as a leader in the lockset business, with a full line of lockset sizes and finishes, Kwikset began to move into a product diversification program.
Foreseeing the possibilities of what nationally has become a $300,000,000 a year business—yet is only in its infancy—Kwikset in 1950 began to install a powdered metallurgy plant. Powder metallurgy had begun to become an important manufacturing process during World War II. Sturdy and highly dependable parts are made from a beginning of finely powdered metals, which can be used as a single metal, or mixed as alloys or other desirable combinations. The parts are shaped (using dies) in an automatic pressing machine, are sintered (in a furnace) to bond the powders, and become an exact part with no scrap and loss with no machining. Powdered metal parts have been produced 65 per cent more inexpensively than comparable machine parts.
Kwikset today has the largest and most complete powdered metal plant west of the Mississippi. Kwikset serves more than 100 customers, many of them first line
Among The States
Geographically, economically, industrially and in transportation, California is unique among the states. In area it is the second largest state, exceeded in size only by Texas. Its shoreline comprises over one-half of the nation's coastal boundary on the Pacific Ocean, thereby making California the principal gateway to the vast Pacific basin. Its terrain is such as to lay down definite controls for agriculture and urban development and for location of lines of transportation. Over much of its area mild climatic conditions are most favorable to year-round activities unhampered by meteorological extremes.
In the western expansion of the nation, the sum total of these and other desirable features have attracted large numbers of people to the Pacific slope. One hundred and 13 years ago, California was the name of the last western frontier, surrounded by legendary yaras of subtropical climate, arid deserts, and snow-capped mountains. Today, a bare century since the days of those legends, California's 1950 population was second only to the state of New York. This century of growth from a handful of Indians and native Californians, plus a few dozen Americans, to ten and a half million people, is probably unprecedented for any similar area in the world.
The population of this state in 1860 was less than 400,000; passed the million mark in 1810; was 3½ million by 1920; 5,677,000 by 1930; 6,907,000 by 1940, and in 1950, 10,586,000.
Today the population has grown far beyond any dreams of the early day settlers. People from the eastern states are migrating to California by the thousands each month.
The Anaheim Community Chest which was organized August 4, 1947, has been headed by Mayor Charles A. Pearson, Judge John Shea, Ray Reafanyder and Barney W. Jordan, who was recently re-elected for a second term.
Agricultural co-operatives in the United States numbered 10,150 in 1945.
