Phone Employees Receive Benefits "Pacific Telephone employees in Southern California received almost $1,500,000 in service pensions, sickness, disability and other benefits during the first four months of this year." James S. Cantlen, vice-president and general manager of this area, reported to his staff. "Of this amount," he said, "service pensions add up to $593,100 while benefit payments in 17 different categories totaled an additional $807,000." "During April," he pointed out, "payments from the Pension Fund totaled $110,000 while sickness and disability expenditures paid under the company's plan amounted to $197,000." "As soon as an employee has been with Pacific Telephone for two years," he said, "he becomes entitled to benefit payments for sickness absence amounting to full pay for four weeks and half pay for an additional nine weeks. Benefits to which the employee is eligible increase as his years with the company increase and when 25 years of employment are reached the company pays a full 12 months' salary upon sickness of such duration." "Pacific Telephone guarantees the future pensions of its employees through a special trust fund," Cantlen said. "The first four months of this year we deposited $2,900,000 in this fund." Cantlen pointed out that the pension and benefit plan has been in operation in the Bell System since 1913 and was one of the first such programs adopted by private industry. The program is financed entirely by the company. He declared that Southern California telephone employees are retiring under the pension plan at the rate of 17 a month and that 1,600 of them are now benefitting from Pacific Telephone's retiree benefits. Every amusement in this realm will involve some story book character immortalized by Walt Disney on film. Frontierland is designed as a glimpse into yesterday, where America's historical past will come to life. It will be entered through the gates of an old log fort, near which may be seen leather stockinged frontiersmen and Indians of many tribes. This is the realm of Davy Crockett, Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, Daniel Boone, John Henry and Johnny Appleseed; giants of American folklore, legendary men who became real and real men who became legendary. Early American stores and buildings, offering souvenirs, merchandise, refreshment and entertainment, will line Frontierland's board-walked streets. Covered wagons and stage coaches drawn by Shetland ponies will carry visitors to river dock, where they may toss off a schooner of root beer at the longest little bar in the world before boarding a 105-foot paddle-steamer for a cruise past famous landmarks of bygone times. Frontierland reflects one objective of his enterprise as a whole in Walt's statement: Dedicated To Ideal "Disneyland will be based upon and dedicated to the ideals, the dreams and the hard facts that have created America. And it will be uniquely to dramatize these dreams and facts and send them forth as a sosree of courage and inspiration to all the world." True-Life Adventureland will feature flora, wild animals, birds, and even human natives from lands the world over. Intrepid travellers may take an explorer's boat on a five-acre voyage over tropical waters of the earth, past ports of call in Mexico, Central America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Florida Everglades As passengers cross the "equator," they will receive the traditional certificate from Neptune himself.
