"ANORANCO" WINS THIRD
AUHS "Anoranco," the school newspaper, came back from Santa Ana College's county-wide journalism workshop rated as the third best all-around paper in the Orange county high schools newspaper judging.
Bob Hoffman, Back from Duty with Army in Germany, Relates Experiences
Back from a tour of what he calls interesting yet exacting duty with the United States infantry in the U.S. occupied zone of Germany is Robert J. Hoffman, son of Martin Talset, 502 N. Claudina, Anaheim.
The AUHS graduate, now 22, was a corporal in an intelligence and reconnaissance platoon of the 4th Infantry Division.
After 16 weeks of basic Army training at Camp Roberts, Calif., Hoffman was shipped to Gelnhausen, a town about the size of Bres, 30 miles northeast of Frankfurt in Germany. He went as a replacement to the unit, filling the gap left by some other soldier who had served his tour of duty and had been returned to the United States and civilian life.
Bob, who until his entry into the Army was an apprentice printer at the Gazette, says that much of his duty in Germany was devoted to tactical maneuvers, always an adjunct of military training.
After the initial seasoning, however, there came the grim task of patrolling and serious map-making, with the ever-present shadow of Russia to the east, lending urgency and a sense of real importance to what otherwise would be just more "maneuvering."

the Army was an apprentice printer at the Gazette, says that much of his duty in Germany was devoted to tactical maneuvers, always an adjunct of military training.
After the initial seasoning, however, there came the grim task of patrolling and serious map-making, with the ever-present shadow of Russia to the east, lending urgency and a sense of real importance to what otherwise would be just more "maneuvering."
His unit was engaged in border patrol in that never-never land separating the U. S., and Soviet zones.
For seven weeks he trained on the U. S.—Czech border, and he often spent weekends near the town of Fulda a German town right on the line. It was there that a recent "incident" involving two men of the U. S. 14th Armored Cavalry hit the headlines. The men, taken into custody by the Russians, since were released to return to their lines.
Bob says that he saw no Russians during his tour of duty near their domain, but other units in his regiment came into contact with them.
He was driver of a jeep on an extended project to map German roads and bridges. He speaks well of the Germans, finding them industrious and eager to get their country back to normal after the ravages of war.
They are not afraid of Russia, he says, but look to the United States for leadership.
Duty in Germany, incidentally, is considered best of the lot by U. S. troops. Bob now contemplates college before settling down to civilian pursuits.
His brother, Bill, is pressman at the Anaheim Gazette, and is proud of a German clock sent to him from Frankfurt by Bob last year: a clock which is supposed to run for 400 days on one winding.
It stopped last February.
