St. Michael’s Second Lenten Service Sun., Weekly Calendar St. Michael's Episcopal Church services for Sunday, March 14, will include: 8:00 a.m. Holy Communion; 9:15 a.m. Holy Communion and Church School; 11:00 a.m. Morning Prayer; and 7:00 p.m. Evensong. Sermon at the 11:00 o'clock service will be "Thy Kingdom Come..." and offertory music by the Senior Choir will be "Souls of the Righteous," by Noble. Special Offertory music at the 9:15 service by the Junior Choir will be "Beautiful Sacior." Following the 11:00 o'clock Morning Praver, a fellowship coffee hour will be held. Beginning immediately after the early Communion service, and continuing until after the last morning service, the Susan Lafaucherie Guild will be conducting a sale of delicious cooked food—desserts, casserole dishes, etc., outside the church. Week Events The following week's events will include: Tuesday, March 16, 9:30 a.m., Holy Communion, and Prayer and Study Group meetings; on Wednesday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m., the Lenten service of Evening Prayer, followed by a talk in the parish hall by Mr. Mason Henry, "Proposed Changes in Our Prayer Book Communion Service." The Susan Lafaucherie Guild will attend the service, after which they will hold their business meeting. Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., the Lenten Holy Communion service will be held, and Thursday night, March 18, from 5:15 until 7:00 p.m., the St. Agnes Guild will hold another of their dinners for the benefit of the kitchen in the soon-to-be-constructed parish hall. Youth Theme Topic At Altrusa Meet "What is being done for the youth of Anaheim" was ably discussed by a panel of youth workers at a recent dinner meeting of the Altrusa club. The program was arranged by public affairs chairman Nan Moore who acted as moderator. Participation in the discussion were Mrs. Roberta McFarland, executive secretary of Anaheim Girl Scouts; Mrs. Lois Whittington, dean of girls at AUHS; and John Bertch, YMCA secretary. In summing up the opportunities offered Anaheim Young people, Mrs. Moore said that local agencies are making every effort to keep pace with the rapid population growth of the city and that statistics indicate that the majority of homes where there are children are associated with at least one of these character building agencies. President Helen Mitchell conducted the business session and gave thanks to the committee chairmen who made the recent Altrusa benefit card party at the Lakewood Country club such a success. The proceeds are expected to exceed $500, she said. Herner Appointed To Annapolis Paul Herner, great grandson of Dr. and Mrs. S. J. Paschall, pioneer residents of Anaheim, last week received an appointment to enter the Naval Academy at Annapolis for the term beginning July 1. His grandfather, the lafe Eugene Adams, was for many years city electrical engineer and his grandmother, Mrs. Maude Adams, still resides on S. Olive St. Herner makes his home in Covina and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Herner of that city. British Consul Addresss Ebell The new British Consul for Southern California, Michael Gillett, O.M.G., addressed the Anaheim Ebell society reciprocity luncheon-on Monday, March 1. In this country less than a month he gave an interesting account of his experiences in Foreign service in China. In the absence of Mrs. Charles Bush, president, first vice-president Mrs. George E. La Follette presided and extended a special welcome to the 35 officers representing Ebell societies throughout Orange County who were in attendance. As is the custom at the March meeting, members of the nominating committee were named. Chosen from the official Board were: Mrs. Joe Thompson and Mrs. Claude Sympson. Elected from the general membership were Mrs. Mel Gauer, Mrs. E. E. Smith and Mrs. Harry Pearson. Official business was followed by an outstanding musical program, the recital of Yola Casell and Hendrick de Boer, concert soprano and tenor. Luncheon chairmen were Mrs. E. O. Hutson and Miss Pauline Houts. Decorations were done by Mrs. Milton Kohne and Mrs. Louie Grigsby. TO ATTEND SESSION MARCH 12 Mrs. Carl E. Korn, leader of the Korn Huskers 4-H club and Mrs. W. Jeanerett, leader of the Katella 4-H club will attend an all-day leader training session tomorrow conducted in Orange by Mrs. Meredythe Barker, Home Advisor. MRS. Plans were outlined for future sales of ice cream bars and T-shirts bearing the school name Noted Speaker At March 15 YMCA Meet "Inside the Middle East—Youth Struggles for Leadership," will be the topic of an address by Paul B. Anderson, associate executive secretary of the YMCA International Committee, at a dinner meeting next Monday, March 15, according to Walter Taylor, President of the Anaheim YMCA. The dinner will be at the 'Y' building, 121 S. Citron street. Paul Anderson for more than 30 years has been engaged in the World Service programs of the YMCA, the duties for which have required extensive travel throughout the world. He recently revisited 13 countries of Europe and the Near East, and is particularly well versed on Russia where, as a young man he lived through the Bolshevik Revolution. He is author of "People, Church and State in Modern Russia," which was a Religious Book of the Month Club best seller. Legion of Honor winner Anderson's work has been recognized by the governments of France and Britain. For his services during the war the French have given him the "Legion of Honor" and the Medal of Recognition of the French Republic." Burkett, director of the State Department of Industrial Relations. Total employment during January was estimated at 4,848,000. This, Scharrenberg said, is the highest January level in the state's history, although a decline of about 158,000 from December's 5,006,000. Mrs. Viola Shoupe Services Saturday Mrs. Viola Mabel Shoupe, 62, 543 S. Resh, native of El Moro, Colorado, who came to Anaheim 35 years ago, died Wednesday evening, March 3, at an Orange County hospital after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband, Glen W. VIOLA SHOUPE SERVICES SATURDAY Mrs. Viola Mabel Shoupe, 62, 543 S. Resh, native of El Moro, Colorado, who came to Anaheim 35 years ago, died Wednesday evening, March 3, at an Orange County hospital after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband, Glen W. Shoupe; one son, Robert S. Shoupe of Inglewood; one sister, Mrs. A. L. Updyke of Seal Beach and two grandchildren. She was a member of the Methodist church and of Circle No. 614 Neighbors of Woodcraft. Funeral services were conducted from the Hilgenfeld chapel Saturday, March 6, Rev. William McKinley Walker, pastor of Wesley Methodist church, officiating and burial was made in Loma Vista Memorial Park. CHRISTENING HELD Mr. and Mrs. Earl Jagdfeld presented their baby daughter, Earllyn Stephany, for christening, Sunday, at St. Boniface church. The Rev. Father Casey performed the ceremony. Wesley Jones was godfather and Bernice Bouas, godmother.
