Meal Ticket on The Boss Gets New Schedule Employers providing meals as part of employees' wages were reminded today that the California Department of Employment has established a new schedule of values for those meals applying to wages paid on and after Jan. 1, 1954. R. C. Hitt, Santa Ana Auditor in charge said the new schedule provides the following values: for three meals a day, $1.15; for breakfast, 25 cents; for lunch, 35 cents; for dinner, 55 cents, and for a meal not identifiable as either breakfast, lunch or dinner, 40 cents. "Unemployment insurance taxes must be paid on meals when they are part of the employee's wages," Hitt said. "This is true both of the employer's payment to the unemployment fund and the employee's contribution to the state disability insurance fund." Kirkwood, State Controller, announced that Orange county receives $96,208.34 as its share of the $4,902,998 apportionment to counties of Highway Users Taxes for the month ended November 30, 1953. Of the $21,239,889 available in the Highway Users Tax Fund for distribution in November, $4,902.28 was allocated to counties, $1,117.718 to the State Highway Fund for Expenditure on Highways, stated Controll-Kirkwood. While the November distribution was $1,560,396 lower than October, it was up $5,054,448 over the same period last year. This 31.23 percent increase over November 62 is primarily due to the increase in the tax rate on gasoline 66 per gallon.
