HENRY KUCHEL 50 Years Ago Charles Schindler is plastering the premises formerly occupied by the post office and which is to be used by Chas. Federman as a gents' furnishing goods emporium. Mrs. C. E. Holcomb and Miss Dora Zeyn entertained the Mi-rcoles club yesterday at their home on Los Angeles street. Progressive euche was played and one enjoyable afternoon was spent at this popular home. Refreshments were served by the hostesses during the afternoon: The first prize, a water color picture was won by Mrs. Ahlborn. The second, a pot-ted plant, by Mrs. Arthur Lewis and the booby by Mrs. A. Nagel. Percy Bradford, son of A. S. Bradford, of Placentin, was shot in the ankle and foot by the accidental discharge of a gun in the hands of James Stafford on Sunday while the two boys were out hunting quall. Stafford carried his injured companion to a shady spot and hastened for aid. Telephone messages were sent to Drs. Freeman, Rich and Clark of Fullerton, who hurried to the side of the injured lad. Bradford was taken to the Fullerton hospital where 20 or more buckshot were taken from each foot. Yesterday the injured lad was reported doing well and no serious complications were feared. George Hagar made a business trip to Los Angeles this week. Chester Holcomb came up from Newport on Tuesday to re-stock his larder and attend to some matters of business. The family will return home this week. Articles of incorporation of the First United Presbyterian church in Santa Ana have been filed. Directors, A. McFadden, A. T. Oliver and A. F. McFadden. MANCHESTER TAYLOR LUMBER CO. "MORE FOR YOUR BUILDING DOLLAR" Right Guide Veterans attending school or college under the Korean GI Bill were reminded today by the Veterans Administration that the amount of money they may earn outside of school hours has no effect whatsoever on the GI allowances paid them by the Government. The monthly allowances will remain the same, regardless of outside earnings, VA said. In fact, these earnings heed not even be reported to the VA. The only "ceiling" under the Korean GI Bill applies to veterans taking on-the-job or apprentice training. But even this "ceiling" of $310 a month imposes no limit whatsoever upon how much a veteran may earn. Instead it works this way: when the veteran's earnings as a trainee, plus his monthly GI allowance, exceed $310 a month, VA scales down the allowance accordingly, to bring the total within the $310 limit. ON-THE-JOB TRAINEES The $310-a-month ceiling applies to all on-the-job trainees, regardless of the rate of GI allowance they are receiving. The beginning allowance rate for a veteran with no dependents is $70 a month; with one dependent, it is $85, and with more than one dependent, it is $105. Under the law, the rate is reduced at fourmonth intervals, as training progresses and as their earning ability increases. GI allowances for veterans in school full-time are $110, with no dependents; $135, with one dependent, and $160 with more than one dependent. The original World War II GI Bill did have a "ceiling" that ap- BUSINESS SERVICE RENT AN ELECTRIC PORTABLE SEWING MACHINE EXPERIENCED REPAIRING on all makes of machines. Moderate Rates. New Drug Out A new antibiotic "wonder drug" that will be used to treat a wide range of bacterial and rickettsial infections has been placed on the market by Lederle Laboratories Division, American Cyanamid Company. The new drug, Achromycin, is known to scientists as tetracyline and belongs in the same chemical family as Aureomycin chlorotetracycline. Clinical trials have shown the drug to have fewer side reactions and greater stability than the older related antibiotics. Achromycin also has an increased ability to penetrate body tissues and fluids. It will be used in the treatment of a wide range of infections, such as pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis and the like. This newest of the "wonder drugs" was the subject of reports read recently by a number of scientists at a symposium in Washington, D.C., sponsored by the Antibiotics Division of the Food and Drug Administration. Like other antibiotics, Achromycin will be sold only on the prescription of a physician. Situations Wanted M&F CHILD CARE In my home. Call KEystone 5-5691. PAINTING, PAPER HANGING TEXTURING.
