IF YOU GIVE a moment's thought to the things electricity does for you in a full twenty-four hour day, you'll see quickly that you get a lot of service for just a few pennies. But you can find out how little that amount actually is by dividing your last Edison bill—or your next one—by sixty. Each Edison bill covers two months' service. This simple little exercise in arithmetic demonstrates clearly that electricity is today's biggest bargain. EDISON SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY Black Widow Spiders in New Role At Northrop-Anaheim for Defense At Northrop Aircraft's Anaheim Division, the natural productive effort of deadly Black Widow spiders is being used to keep deadlier monsters—the U.S. Army's tanks—on the prowl against possible enemy attack. The spiders have literally spun themselves into a key role in the national defense program by furnishing the cross-hairs for scientific instruments used in Northrop-Anaheim's production of sighting and aiming devices for tanks and 105-mm self-propelled howitzers. Tanks rely on Northrop-Anaheim's range finder to gauge distance and elevation to an enemy target accurately and swiftly to insure an early hit. For the same reason howitzers rely on telescopes and periscopes, which are also produced at the Anaheim installation. The future evolution of these fire control instruments will be aided by the smaller scale production effort of the Black Widows. Research technicians at Northrop's Orange county facility decided to create their own stable of spinners because their irregular need for the web in research and development work precluded obtaining large amounts from their sources. They soon found that the spiders produce two types of web; one smooth, strong and elastic for climbing and the other sticky and weak for trapping food. The first type is valuable for instruments. The method of web extraction used at Northrop-Anaheim is relatively simple. A stick is thrust into the spider's "home." The eight-legged insect climbs on the stick, is shaken off and spins a large amount of usable web as it lowers itself to the floor. The material is then secured and placed on the eyepieces of microscopes, telescopes and collimators. These precise instruments are used for gathering data on future designs of optical instruments. Spider webs have been used as cross hairs for a number of years, but Wally Loucks (8141 Moraga St., Anaheim) and Doug McClure (328 W. Brookdale, Fullerton), Northrop research analysts who take care of the Widows, believe Northrop-Anaheim is one of the few west coast industrial concerns to "grow" its own. However, Loucks and McClure caution would - be spider suppliers that target accurately and swiftly to insure an early hit. Your baby shares his birth sign with many famous persons: Leo statesmen include Stanley Baldwin, Herbert Hoover; Leo writers, Alexander Dumas, Alfred Lloyd Fennyson and George Bernard Shaw. Feminine Leo stars include Ethel Barrymore, Norma Shearer, Myrna Loy, Esther Williams and Jane Wyatt. Sandwich Month August has been proclaimed sandwich month. Such a proclamation fits right in with easy living when the weather is warm. slices of chicken, ham or turkey, on toast slices topped with a cheese sauce make a delight to see and eat as they come from the roiler bubbling hot. Lagging appetites will perk up at a frill of lettuce, a crisp curl of carrot pickle fans, radish roses, rosy red crab apples, cubes of cheese and fresh fruit on the sandwich plate as garnish or as an ad. BACK TA SCHOOL Your child does his best at school when properly outfitted for work and for play. There is nothing like a try-on session to make a mother see that last year's wardrobe simply will not do. Is it possible that children can grow that much in a single summer? With the opening of school coming closer, Anaheim mothers are scanning local stores for back to school clothes. Experienced shoppers look for clothes with plenty of room for expansion. Deep hems that can be let out later are a decided economy. The "sanforized" label means that the garment will shrink less than one per cent when washed, another important factor. Double-stitched seams are good insurance against gaps later on. Mothers in the know look for trousers reinforced at the knee, jackets with extra thicknesses at the elbows, and closely woven materials with a high thread count. When you shop in the Anaheim stores, you will find excellent selections from which to choose, not only from the standpoint of wearability but also from the standpoint of smart styling in an attractive price range.
