Kuchel Sees no Slack in So. California Aircraft Manufacturing United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel (R-Calif.) revealed last week he has assurances from the aircraft manufacturing industry in California it does not expect any lessening of payrolls in the industry here. Kuchel said he obtained confidential reports when he was informed of a "whispering campaign," particularly in Southern California, that amounts proposed by President Eisenhower for Air Force procurement this year would result in "mass unemployment." "If this were true," the junior California Senator said in an interview recorded for radio broadcasting in California, "it would be a very serious situation, because mass unemployment, is bad for our state and bad for our country. So, I contacted leaders of the aircraft industry in California. They agree there will be no lay-off so far as their own feelings and beliefs are concerned." "As a matter of fact their hiring programs, which include newspaper advertising, recruitment training, will be continued." Present California employer in the industry is 196,000, highly concentrated in Southern California. One manufacturing Kuchel said, may have to "a few thousand" people from payroll because of contract pleitions "but others plan more increases that will offset Kuchel pointed out that if I identify Eisenhower's budget $11.5 billion for the Air Force approved by Congress, the age will have this year, with $28 million in carry-over appropriations a total of $40 billion. "I think it is generally correct," he said, "that the Air Force cannot spend or obligate $40 million in a 12-month period." "It is shocking," he added, "an individual, mistakenly or some ugly purpose, to fright people and to suggest to them they are going to lose their employment." Kuchel said he was told by industry executive that "any agogue who attempts to fright aircraft workers with statements that they are going to lose jobs, has a source of information which is superior to any source that either the Air Force or prime contractors have." How to prevent rusting of metal equipment STANDARD Apply Standard Utility Coating to metal roofing, orchard heaters, tanks, pipe, implements, etc., to protect them against the weather or dampness. It is a quick-drying asphaltic paint that may be applied by brush, spray or by dipping. One coat gives 6 to 12 months protection against rust and corrosion on farm implements that must stand outside in the weather. Several coats on an underground storage tank make it last years longer. HENRY KUCHEL 25 Years Ago Work began yesterday clearing the lot at the corner of Center and Lemon streets preparatory to the erection of a brick block to be occupied by the postoffice. McWilliams and Dun have the contract for the building which will be a substantial structure, large enough to accommodate the demands of the growing postal business. The residence occupied by J.P. Hatzfeldt will be moved back and faced on Lemon street. The postoffice was many years ago located on this corner, and now, after occupying its present location for a number of years, is about to take Horace Greeley's advice and go West a block to where it was before. Mr. Dickel, through whose efforts removal was brought about, had the matter pretty well sewed up three months ago. When he offered to erect a building for the post office when the department desired a number of changes in the present location, which was refused. Mr. Dickel had a heart-to-heart talk with Uncle Sam and now everybody sees the result. Coleman and Amos Travis were visiting friends in town from Esperanza rancho yesterday. 50 Years Ago A gasoline stove in the residence of Claude Eaton, at the corner of Chartres and Olive streets, exploded shortly after 7 o'clock on Monday evening and almost totally destroyed the building. The alarm was given instantly and the fire bell was rung by Clarence Perdomo within a minute after the first cry of fire. The fire department had streams of water playing upon the fire within five minutes and, with excellent pressure upon the hose the fire was soon under control. The building was owned by W. I. Carver and was not insured. Modjeska, the celebrated Polish actress, has so far recovered from an attack of bronchitis, with which she has been recently troubled in New York, as to leave the hotel Manhattan and depart for Chicago, enroute to her ranch home in Southern California. Her husband, Count Bozenta, is with her. The Madamé has let it be known that she probably will make her home in the Golden State for several years. She feels more at home here on her ranch than anywhere else and declares it is one of the finest and best appointed ranches in the west. Modjeska's health is far from good and she will probably never undertake another long theatrical engagement, though she hopes to appear on the stage for about two months each season in the Pacific Coast cities. 75 Years Ago William Fesenfeld advertises for sale his fine cottage and lot on the corner of Palm and First South street opposite the residence of Mr. Dickel. at SMIT EXTRA SPECIAL FOR DOLLAR DAYS Aug. 7 and 8 SAVE $160 on 2-Pc. Several citizens are complaining of drunken Indians who are constantly prowling about their places and lying drunk in the roads to the great annoyance of women and children. It is, of course, to be supposed that they buy their liquor in Los Angeles or some out of the way place, when there is no law preventing the sale of liquor to Indians, and bring it here to drink.
