Smog Equipment Write-Off Bill Backed by Kuchel United States Senator Thomas H. Kuchel revealed today he will back legislation for a fast write-off of expenditures made to check "smog" in industrial areas. A bill by Congressman Carl Hinshaw of California pending in the House of Representatives would permit writing off in five years expenditures for special smokestack equipment and similar devices to collect "atmospheric pollutants and contaminants." Kuchel said it "is a good bill, because we must have the cooperation of industry to cope with the smog problem and industry cannot be expected to make the costly installations necessary if it takes 20 years or more to amortize the equipment." Anaheim Girl Scouts End 7-Day Camp on Santa Catalina Island Anaheim Girl Scouts recently returned from a seven-days' camp on Santa Catalina Island. Their daily schedule began at 6:30 each morning with a dip in the ocean before breakfast. All participated in water sports during the morning, and the afternoons were spent in crafts, hiking, and relaxing. High points of the week were a water carnival, a trip in the famous glass bottom boats, and a visit from Andy Jorgson who accompanied Florence Chadwick on her swim from the island to San Pedro. On Sunday evening a very impressive inspirational service was held on "Lion's Head," a high point overlooking the ocean. The camp was democratically governed by a camp council composed of two girls from each of the eight units. They were Judith Metzger, Katherine Walker, Donna Tolbert, Linda Belanger, Louella Baker, Therest Metzger, Mary Cain, Nancy Laird, Arlene Herbert, Marcia Scarff, Charlene Allen, Mary Lou May, Marilyn Mayberry, Joyce Kauffman, Anne Karwher, Janet Bushman, and Shirley Shakoian. As in all Girl Scout camping, the Catalina camp had three main objectives: to stimulate enjoyment and appreciation of the out-of-doors; to provide training in citizenship through community living and democratic planning; to contribute to good health and to develop resourcefulness, initiative, and self-reliance. These objectives were accomplished under the able direction of the following councilors: Mrs. Lura Shulz, Mrs. Max Hiltscher, Mrs. Mattie Hodkins, Mrs. Rosalie Bultena, Mrs. Jerry Shakolan, Miss Joyce Sweeney, Mrs. Marjorie Stirrat, Mrs. Arne Atkinson, Mrs. Fred Klein, Mrs. Ralph Ring and Mrs. Roberta McFarland of Anaheim. Mrs. C. A. Dillman, Silverado, Mrs. R. L. Baker, Santa Ana, and Miss Gretchen Smith, Mrs. David Ewing, Miss Norine Foley, Mrs. Ethel Munsterman, Mrs. Erik Anderson of Monrovia and Dr. Seymour Harris of Los Angeles. Minute Maid Wins A judgement upholding the rights of Minute Maid Corporation to its registered trade mark, "Minute Maid," and holding that the use of the name "Minute Maid" in connection with frozen meat products constituted a violation of the rights of the Minute Maid Corporation, has been entered by John W. Holland, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Judge Holland found that the words "Minute Maid" have acquired secondary meaning in the minds of the public as denoting products produced and sold by Minute Maid Corporation, the well-known producer of the Minute Maid line of frozen foods. Minute Maid Corporation had alleged in its suit that Pure Foods, Inc., of Miami, was guilty of unfair competition and trade mark infringement by reason of its use of a name similar to the Minute Maid trade mark. John M. Fox, president of Minute Maid Corporation, testified during the trial that Minute Maid had spent in excess of six million dollars for advertising the Minute Maid trade mark during the period prior to the trade mark infringement.
