Valencia Market Impacts of Other Fruit Sales
Los Angeles, July 3—The impact of increasingly heavy arrivals of deciduous fruits, melons and dates, plus a lower trend on all size Southern California valencias which now make up the bulk of shipments, resulted in a decline on oranges during week ending July 4. Medium large size valencias continued daring good prices but the low values on the more abundant small sizes pulled the average down to the level of $3.70 box f.o.b., 30c less than last week. Sales were slightly below those for the same fruit sent to observe a long 4th of July day.
Marketing organizations recommended the diversion of extremely small size valencias to pressing channels where anticidious returns should be greater those for the same fruit sent to fresh market. This action is part of shippers would aid fresh market and keep pace with current demand for oranges used in producing canned juice, generally strong demand conceived to prevail for California valencias during the week but with holiday purchases completed, sales demand slackened in the spots and an easier trend developed despite extremely favorable weather in most areas of nation. For the third consecutive week, prices showed a substantial advance to about $7.85
Ikes Empty-Handed At End of Charter Fishing Cruise
It was albacore or nothing according to the agreement made by ten local fishermen last week when they chartered the "Agnes K." a 46-foot diesel job, and made the first run of the season from the 19th street pier at Newport. So the fishermen, all members of the Anaheim Izaak Walton League, came home empty-handed.
"It was really only a prospecting trip," says Roy Field, spokesman for the group, and added that by next week the albacore ought to be running well.
This is the third year in a row that the party has chartered a boat for the season. Last year, 17 trips were made. This year they expect to fish every Tuesday. Last week's all-day run took them 18 miles beyond Catalina Island.
Included in the initial fishing party were Roy Field, Dick Martin, Sam Landa of Brea, Dave Newhouse of Santa Ana canyon, Pop Lund, Fred Robbins, Henry Du Bois, Denny Diaz, Pop Dinkler and Jim Blohm.
