Mrs. Bradford Jones' Roses are Highlights of Garden Club Show
By JOAN S. WHITE
At the height of the Anaheim rose season, Mrs. Bradford Jones' roses were one of the highlights of the Anaheim Garden Club flower show held at the home of Mrs. John Boege, 11372 Burton ave. The private showing climaxed approximately 20 years of successful gardening by the local club and nearly all of the organization's 40 members contributed to the exhibit.

Anaheim Vocal Students Perform In Voice Recital
Some of Anaheim's talented young people performed last Friday evening when they gave a voice recital under the direction of their teacher, Mrs. George W. Sloop, Jr., at the Margaret J. Buttree Studios at 427 N. Palm st.
Sharron Williams, soprano, opened the program singing, "My Heart Ever Faithful" by Bach, "Come Unto Him" from Handel's "Messiah" and "Carmena" by Wilson.
John Vale, tenor sang Purcell's "Passing By" and "One World" by O'Hara.
Rachel Cadwalader sang the contralto aria from the "Messiah," "He was Despised" and "Into the Night" by Edwards.
"Wher er You Walk" by Handel, "La Donna e Mobile" from the opera "Rigoletto" by Verdi and "The Holy City" was sung by gardening enthusiast, Mrs. Jones has developed the knack of growing nearly perfect roses. Her new home at 1850 East Sycamore has been planned with the rose garden in mind, and a large portion of the two-thirds of an acre home site is devoted to their culture.
Warm Colors Predominate
The rambling modified California colonial home has been decorated both inside and out to harmonize with the spectacular roses which Mrs. Jones selects in her favorite warm colors ranging from the palest of pinks to the deepest of reds. Informal mass plantings frame the front of the house, setting off to perfection the light grey clapboards and the rare pink brick imported from Utah.
Full architectural advantage is taken of the rear patio planting where lovely pinks and reds of roses mingle with the pluces and yellows of delphinium and columbine. A large picture window seems to make this garden a part of the living room and tasteful decor heightens the illusion. The walls are done in pale blue as a charming background for the pink tones used in the furnishings. Measures of roses appear in floor coverings and draperies. A lovely arrangement of fresh roses on a low table is usually the focal point of the room.

Does Own Gardening
Explains Mrs. Jones, "I do all my own gardening and since I have always loved roses, decided to devote the major portion of my new garden to them. Roses cannot be neglected but are actually easy to care for."
Secrets of Mrs. Jones' success appear to be careful selection of patented rose varieties, judicious fertilizing with barnyard manure, and a two inch mulch of compost. She recommends watering every 10 days, a not too early pruning sometime in February, and a systematic program of pest control.
Lovely Cut Flowers
Mrs. Jones pick her roses in the early morning and puts them in ice water for two hours before arranging. She freshens the petals by placing under cold running water. She next makes a two-inch slash in the base of each stem and removes the lower thorns. This prolongs the life of the rose and makes arrangements easier.
When presenting bouquets to friends, she wraps the entire bouquet in wet newspaper, pinning the edges tightly together to keep warm air out as a precaution to preserve freshness.
Among Mrs. Jones' pervious artworks are "Charlotte Armstrong" the long stemmed. "Show and the beautiful pink Love." For anyone who fragrance of a California Mrs. Jones recommends that matte "Sweet Sixteen," and Clipper."

Local Navy Commander Successful Gardener when Back in Home Port
By JOAN S. WHITE
Gardening is a hobby that Lt. Comdr. Al Koch cannot do much about when he is aboard a destroyer somewhere in the Pacific, but he makes up for lost time once he is back at home port where he resides with his wife and daughter at 143 Evelyn dr.
His is a ranch-type home, situated on a city size lot. The landscaping and upkeep present all of the problems familiar to homeowners throughout Anaheim. Koch has coped with them with ingenuity and conspicuous success.
Greenest Lawn
Ask any neighbor to point out the greenest lawn and Koch's gets the nod every time. It is of dichondra that he planted himself, and mows to keep it even. He sets the mower blades high, one and one-half inches above the ground, in the belief that a cutting at this height leaves enough foliage to protect the roots from scorching sun in summer and from biting frosts in winter. A dressing of ammonium sulphate several times a year promotes lush growth and gives an intense green coloring to the lawn.
This thick velvety lawn carpets the front yard right to the foundation plantings at the house. Evergreen shrubbery and flowering bushes are the base, with variegated ivy climbing the posts of the front porch to give privacy and shade. The landscaping is a permanent thing. It does not change and sq is easy to maintain the year round. With this end in view, annuals are never for the house.

BACKS CAMPBELL
Miss Miller, head of the English and social science departments at the high school, left the Inglewood airport by American Airlines on May 12 for New York, where she boarded a BOAC plane May 13, arriving at the British capital city the following day.
While in Great Britain, she and Mr. and Mrs. Adams plan a tour of England, Scotland and North Wales before leaving Newcastle by boat for Bergen, Norway, on June 29.
Among Norwegian cities to be visited, in addition to Bergen, are Norheimsund on July 3, Stalheim on July 4, Balestrand on July 5, and Flam on July 7, arriving at Oslo for a three-day stay between July 8-10. While in the Norwegiian capital her address will be the Stephen Hotel.
Final country to be visited will be Denmark, with headquarters at Alexandria Hotel in Copenhagen between July 13-15. The party will leave by Scandinavian Airlines for New York the end of July.
Warm air out as a precautionary measure to preserve freshness. Among Mrs. Jones' personal favorites are "Charlotte Armstrong," the long stemmed "Show Girl," and the beautiful pink "First Love." For anyone who doubts the fragrance of a California rose, Mrs. Jones recommends the aromatic "Sweet Sixteen," and "Miss Dipper."
With this end in view, annuals are never interspersed with the shrubbery but are planted in special beds at the back of the house.
Fruit Trees
The house itself and the front lawn occupy a considerable portion of the 75 x 110 foot lot, so that to accommodate outdoor living in back, every bit of space must give a good account of itself. Koch worked out a blueprint four years ago to have it do just that.
After he had enclosed the yard at the boundary lines by a five-foot solid board fence, his next step was to divide the backyard approximately in half. This he did with a low three and a half foot fence which ran crosswise of the yard, parallel to the house. The part nearest the house was set aside for an ornamental garden to be used for outdoor living while the far section was given over to children's play area and orchard.
The play area is equipped with stationary play equipment and is soon to have a fair size swim-

Looking toward the orchard, one sees vivid masses of cannas banked along one side of the dividing fence and hardy geraniums on the other. Chrysanthemums have been set out for fall blooms. These mass plantings are very effective and are composed of the types of flowers that grow profusely with very little care. They provide the background, the setting for outdoor living.
As there is sun, so there must be shade. A Chinese elm, chosen for its rapid growing habits, umbrellas over the brick patio to supply the needed shade. Growing in its shade is an exotic Burmese honeysuckle, an unusual plant which bears very fragrant four inch flowers. Nearby are several of the trailing type fuschia which Koch has trained to grow as a vine.
Scene of Parties
This enchantingly beautiful outdoor living room is the scene of many parties. Mrs. Koch, no barbecue fan, prefers to do her cooking indoors, and then to serve food picnic style at a huge round table under the elm.
Koch is happy to be able to devote week ends to his garden now, having entrusted its care to a professional gardener during the time he spent in Korea.
