New hope for men who are "down but not out" can be provided by an out-of-use article tossed aside in an Anaheim home, according to Brigadier Ranson D. Gifford, manager of the Salvation Army Social Center which serves this area. He explained that reconditioning of discards donated by Anaheim residents in the annual Salvage Week campaign here June 8-10 will make possible a continued social rehabilitation program. Brigadier Gifford cited two cases to show how cast-on articles need nonless and handicapped men. The first is a man who applied at the center after serving a sentence in Leavenworth Federal Prison on a narcotics conviction. He was broken in spirit and had a speech impediment caused by nervousness when made him nearly speechless at times. The applicant was put to work in the sorting room with men and women or understanding who had a desire to nep him. After five months he is a changed person. He has responded to the treatment he needed to help him to overcome his handicap and is now determined to "come back." The second case is a young man whose drinking forced him to leave his wife and children. He was put in the paint shop under a foreman who understood the problems of an alcoholic. That was only a few weeks ago, but already this man has snow premise progress. He is interested again in his family and is endeavoring to prepare himself for a good job so he may take his place in society. Brigader Gifford said discards donated last year provided thousands of hours of occupational therapy, means, lodgings and financial assistance to needy and handicapped men. He reported that the center has continuing need for discarded but still usable clothing, furniture, bedding, dishes, shoes, toys, stoves, radios, appliances, bric-a-brac, bicycles, rugs, rags and miscellaneous items.
