Jolly Fun! Expert Says Eat To Reduce; No Stress, No Strain Want to slim down so that bathing ruft won't hump and bump this summer? Better start eating! You have to eat to reduce and three pounds a day of the right foods will help you do it. That's the advice given by reducing expert Victor H. Lindlahr in the May issue of the Journal of Living magazine. Most reducing diets are built around don'ts and must-nots, says Lindlahr. Such an approach is entirely negative. The truth is, to lose weight effectively you must eat liberally of two classes of foods. First and foremost, you must eat enough proteins. They are the building blocks of the body tissues. Second, you must eat the low calorie fruits and vegetables because they contain the factors that help you to reduce. Lindlahr advises eating the equivalent of at least a pound of protein foods a day—some at each meal. These include meats, fish, eggs, cheese and milk. For reducers, he advises skim milk; since it contains all the protein but none of the fat of whole milk. The other two pounds of food daily should be made up of vegetables and fruits, which contain the vitamin-mineral enzymes. These catalysts, as they are properly called, actually help to split the fat molecules apart. It is entirely correct, according to Lindlahr, to say that vitamin-mineral enzyme foods are actually "reducing" for people who are too fat. By a rough estimate, the ever-age overweight person needs at least two pounds a day of the foods to metabolize and use one entire pound of body weight. About three-quarters of a poultry should be eaten raw, in the form of salads, and the same amount may be eaten cooked. The balance can be made up in the form juice, if desired. vista Casual MODERN Here's furniture designed and developed in California for the significant times that make up today... Hemisphere Travelers Find Los Angeles Drivers 'Gentlemen' "Los Angeles motorists are gentlemen and drive with fantastic safety." Hemisphere Travelers Find Los Angeles Drivers 'Gentlemen' "Los Angeles motorists are gentlemen and drive with fantastic safety." It may be hard to convince Angelenos of that, but it's the firm opinion of two young men from Venezuela who have reached Los Angeles on an automobile trip from Tierra del Fuego, at the tip of Southern America, to Fairbanks, Alaska. "We are amazed at the speed and safety with which traffic moves through Los Angeles, especially on your magnificent freeways," Henry Ilias and John Zaleski told officials of the Automobile Club of Southern California yesterday. "In the large cities of the other countries we have visited there is no pattern or reason to the flow of traffic. But here it is different. It is a pleasure to drive in America," they added. The two were boyhood friends in Warsaw, Poland, and later served together in World War II with a British regiment. They became naturalized citizens of Venezuela in 1946. Last August the pair started from Caracas, Venezuela, in an American-made automobile (1951 Chevrolet station wagon) on a 75,000-mile trip. Since then they have traveled 40,000 miles through 18 Central and South American countries. Some of the way has been over uncharted roads. They traveled through swamps, rice fields, jungles and across rivers where they either built bridges or floated the car across on a raft, the pair said. In Central America it was necessary to take a boat on two occasions because there are no roads through the dense jungle. From Los Angeles, Ilias and Zaleski will go to Alaska and then return home after a trip to the east coast. They plan to publish an illustrated book of their tour. Apprenticeship Registration Up in State Registration of apprentices in the State of California has steadily increased throughout the past year, according to figures just released by the State Division of Apprenticeship Standards. On March 31 active registered apprentices numbered 18,977, it was noted. During the nine months since July 1, 1952, 7477 new apprentices were registered, a notable uptrend over the equivalent period of the year before. Orange county has kept pace with the lest of the state in maintaining this upward trend of new apprentices, according to James R. Warfel, local field representative for the Division of Apprenticeship Standards. Korean veterans who have returned home and entered apprentice training under Public Law since July 1, 1952, 7477 new apprentices were registered, a notable uprend over the equivalent period of the year before. Orange county has kept pace with the lest of the state in maintaining this upward trend of new apprentices, according to James R. Warfel, local field representative for the Division of Apprenticeship Standards. Korean veterans who have returned home and entered apprentice training under Public Law 550 have been a contributing factor to this increase. Employers desiring to train Korean veterans were advised to apply to the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, Room 202 Pacific building, Third and Broadway, Santa Ana, for approval of their establishments to give on-the-job training. Delay in getting veterans enrolled as apprentices so that they can receive training benefits under Public Law 550 (the Korean Veterans Law) can be minimized if employers will apply promptly for approval and return required forms to the Veterans Administration promptly, it was pointed out. Under the provisions of California's Shelley-Maloney Apprentice Labor Standards Act of 1939, apprentices — whether they are veterans or non-veterans — are registered by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, which also approves establishment for on-the-job training of veterans. HART because Orange county superior court judges have shucked their bills, pulled up their galluses and ended out the work better than judges in other counties, Orange county may not get the proposed department of the superior court. Despite the fact that the bill passing department 5 of the court passed the assembly judiciary committee successfully, the word comes from Sacramento that the judicial council opposes the addition of a department here. Chief Justice Phil Gibson of the state supreme court, who heads the judicial council, has made known the council's position. That is supposed to decide such matters, but it may not. It is recalled at the courthouse that the judicial council also regarded the establishment of department 4 unfavorably, but that did not stop it. The judicial council, having periodical reports from each county, showing the number of unheard cases stacked up on the court calendar, finds that Orange county court calendar is in much better shape than most, therefore feels that no more departments are needed. Orange county supervisors, grand jury, and court officials want to keep the calendar in good shape by adding the fifth department. The judicial council is said to favor letting things get snarled up before the need is supplied. That would be very easy to do. Only steady grinding prevents it now. And the load is gradually increasing. If and when the fifth department is formed, Gov. Warren must appoint a member of the Orange county bar to the judgeships.
