WHITE Lured from home by the call of the open road and a touch of spring fever, many Anaheim residents have lately enjoyed a day's outing in the Claremont region. Improved scenic highways make the junction to the charming little college town very pleasant. And within a short distance of each other on the outskirts of town are the newly relocated Botanic Gardens and the Padua Hills theater and art colony. to the Botanic Garden at the opening hour of 10 a.m. No special reservations are necessary as was required in the past when the experimental station was located near Anaheim at Rancho Santa Ana. Botanic Gardens The new gardens covering about shrubs, flowers, trees and plants native to California, they are still in the formative stages and much work remains to be done. However, the area is bright with a patchwork of blooms and the flora is well marked. Insofar as is visible to casual inspection very little mature shrubbery has been moved from the original gardens, but seems rather to have been transplanted by means of small cuttings and seeds. Guides are furnished on request for special parties. Gates close at 4 p.m. Padua Hills A visit to Padua Hills is an enchanting experience. On an olive-dining room. The Padua Hills dining room serves excellent American food and distinctive Mexican dishes. During meals, guests are entertained and served by the same Mexican boys and charming senoritas who later appear on the theatre stage. Lunchon is served from 12 to 1:15 and dinner from 6 to 7:15 daily except Monday. The Plays In colorful native costume, a talented group of Mexican young people provide intimate entertainment in a fully enclosed and comfortable theatre whose terraces overlooks a valley full of pleasant memories of the old rancho days. Spanish songs and vivacious dances add to the ever changing picture on the Padua stage. The art of the players, their naturalness, spontaneity, and enthusiasm are unique in the history of the American theatre. Attending a Mexican village or home and taking part in an exciting adventure. It is native folk drama at its best. Romantic Traditions Padua Institute, a non-profit organization, controls and operates the theatre. Its purpose is to give the public a high type of entertainment and through this entertainment keep alive the romantic Spanish and Mexican traditions of California, and to give people opportunity for an intimate and friendly understanding of our Latin American neighbors. It also affords wonderful opportunity for training and self-expression to a talented group of Mexican youth. Matinees are given Wednesdays The Farmer's Corner By RALPH E. TAYLORE Eisenhower has been president for more than three months and no crisis has stirred the nation during that time. Little things, maybe, such as came up over the confirmation of Charles Wilson as secretary of defense; but nothing of a monumental nature—nothing to scare the wits out of our people. Which is certainly a change from the days of the New Deal and its penchant for sending up periodic Roman candles signaling new and more stringent control. As a consequence, this return to "normal" living is apt to create a feeling within us that nothing, much, is happening in government. The facts are quite to the contrary. Promises Kept Eisenhower, in effect, promised us a stable administration dedicated to individual freedom. He promised to head back towards free enterprise. He promised to rid the nation of every possible control over our lives, compatible with the welfare of the nation. In rebuttal we heard that such policies would lead to "runaway inflation," and worse. We all remember that. It seems to an observer that Eisenhower and his administration have kept faith, are keeping their promises. In rebuttal we heard that such policies would lead to "runaway inflation," and worse. We all remember that. It seems to an observer that Eisenhower and his administration have kept faith, are keeping their promises. Restrictions Disappearing Within two months they junked price controls, abolished restrictions on construction and credit, and let materials, generally, return to a free market. There are still a few strategic metals which continue to be allocated (copper and aluminum for military requirements, for instance), but in the main, they are now available to those who want them. See how the pace continues, without the predicted "consequences." Ezra Benson, secretary of agriculture, has given the dairymen at their own request, a year to work out their subsidy problems. Treasury Secretary George Humphrey has gone in for long-term bonds (to defeat inflation) and is reported to favor the death of the RFC, a strictly emergency measure now outmoded. In the commerce department, Secretary Weeks has offered for sale the Inland Waterways Corp., a federal barge system which plies the Mississippi. Restrictions have been relaxed to permit sale to municipal governments of 40 per cent of 110,000 of the dwelling units built by the United States government during World War II for defense workers and military personnel. Douglas McKay, secretary of interior, plans to sell synthetic gasoline plant at St. Louis. Freedom Assured And so it goes, the return to free enterprise. A liberty-loving Northrop Awarded 'Scope Contract A $3,800,000 contract for manufacture of telescope mounts has been awarded the Anaheim division of Northrop Aircraft, Inc., by the U.S. army ordnance corps, Richard R. Nolan, Northrop-Anaheim manager, announced today. Nolan said the new orders call for production of 554 of the devices which are used as supports for panoramic telescopes on 105-mm and other self-propelled howitzers. Northrop's Anaheim plant is currently engaged in production of T-41 optical rangefinders and several other types of precision instruments. Range finders are used as sighting and aiming devices on the army's new M47 mec ANAHEIM GAZETTE SPRING EDITION—1955 dium tank, now in service in Germany. More than 1300 persons at Northrop-Anaheim are working on national defense projects under the jurisdiction of the Los Angeles ordnance district commanded by Col. W. S. Broberg.
