Factory Workers' Earnings Hit Record Levels for March in State
Hourly earnings of factory workers in the state advanced to record levels in March, Paul Scharrenberg, California director of industrial relations, announced today.
This was true in all seven metropolitan areas of California for which our division of labor statistics and research compiles earnings information—San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, San Jose, Stockton, San Diego, Sacramento and Fresno—Scharrenberg added.
The average weekly paycheck was substantially higher than a year ago in all seven areas and reached all-time highs in four of these areas—San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Stockton and San Diego.
Here is a summary of earnings and hours trends in each of the seven areas:
San Francisco - Oakland area: Record high earnings of factory workers in the bay area this March exceeded those in any other California metropolitan area. Production workers in bay area factories earned an average of $80.03 per week, a rise of $2.61 from a year ago. Hourly earnings increased 8 cents per hour over the past year reaching an average of $2.05. The average workweek at 24.0 hours this March, was about half an hour shorter than in March 1932.
Los Angeles metropolitan area: In Los Angeles and Orange counties where six out of every 10 of the state's factory workers are employed, average weekly earn-

Officers elected for the 1933-54 term are Mrs. Jack Suller, president; Mrs. Virgil Daoust, first vice-president; Mrs. Eldon Hauck, second vice-president; Mrs. E. Tyreman, recording secretary; Mrs. Robert Loomis, treasurer; Miss Ruth Ann Toft, compiling secretary; Mrs. John Cause, curator and Mrs. Tolf, parliamentarian.
Chairmen elected are Mrs. Gene Newton, membership; Mrs. Lyton Miller, auditor; Mrs. Lowen Williams, ways and means; Mrs. Arthur Pressel, press and publicity, and Mrs. Arthur Pellar, social service. Installation ceremonies will be held next month.
Speaker of the evening, Dr. Fred M. Judson, with his topic: "It's a Wonderful Life," impaired an inspirational lift spiced with a delightful humor. Dr. Judson is a Baptist minister with a keen sense of wit and humor and four workable ideas for living—be yourself, don't take yourself too seriously, learn to relax and don't werry.
In a more serious vein he commented on the fact that pressure groups are working toward the ruling and ruination of America.
Presiding at the lovely table were Mrs. Joe Thompson of the senior Ebell club and Mrs. W. E. Whitman, junior advisor.

Los Angeles metropolitan area: In Los Angeles and Orange counties where six out of every 10 of the state's factory workers are employed, average weekly earnings reached $78.57 this March, $3.47 per week above the year-ago average. Hourly earnings averaged $1.92, an increase of 10 cents per hour since March 1952. The average workweek of 40.8 hours was about half an hour shorter than a year ago.

County Military Bases to Open to Public for AFD
Orange counties will have the opportunity to visit and inspect the major military installations in their area during Armed Forces Week, May 11 to 17, Major General Christian F. Schilt, Commanding General, Aircraft, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, at El Toro, announced last week.
General Schilt has been named as the Orange County Coordinator for the nation-wide observance which will be high-lighted by Armed Forces Day, set by President Eisenhower as Saturday, May 16. The slogan this year will be "Power for Peace."
Besides the various on-the-station programs which will include displays of equipment and buildings, air shows, and other military demonstrations, all branches of the armed services will assist in community observances during the period, such as participation in the annual Festival at Orange.
