Orange Coast Riflemen Compete With Rival Schools via Mail Proof that intercollegiate competition can take place without members of contending teams being present at the same time is exemplified by the Orange Coast Rifle Team, which has just completed its third postal match with universities east of the Rockies. On specific dates set by the National Rifle Association, OCC marksmen and their current rival shoot on their respective rifle range, according to rules set by the NRA. On the same day each school mails to its rival the scores made by its team. To date OCC has won its match with University of Utah and lost to the University of New Mexico Military Institute. Reports from a match with University of Rochester are not yet available. Currently the 10 top ranking OCC marksmen are Richard Parker, campus resident from Omaha, Nebr.; David Hahn of Anahiem; Richard Scharn and Jack Scharn of Capistrano; Moe Gronsky of Balboa; Arthur Uhlmeyer of Lone Pine; Delmar Heath of Newport Beach; and Terry Kingley of Trabuco Canyon. Prior to an intercollegiate match, Rifle Club members meet regularly at noon Monday through Friday to practice shots in each of four positions: prone kneeling, sitting standing, for intra-school matches members shoot ten shots in each of the positions named, aiming for a total possible score of 400 points. Each week the ten members making the highest individual scores are selected for the school team. Of these ten the five top marksmen represent Orange Coast college in competition with teams of other schools. Actually the method provides for a ten and thus represents the College in interscholastic competition. Rifles used are .22 callbre target rifles; the range is a 50 ft. indoor range located on the campus. The club has six target rifles and six firing positions on its range. Because the OCC Rifle club is an affiliate of the National Rifle association, and as such follows NRA rules in all matches, local students can procure shells for practice at a minimum price through the NRA. For competition shooting shells are furnished members of the team. The OCC Rifle club is open to any student enrolled in school Wesley Mole, instructor in auto mechanics, is sponsor of the club. AUHS Trackmen Have Tough Day The trackmen of the local high school team didn't fare too well in the Chaffey invitational track meet, held Saturday, Little Mickey Gouyd of the Colonists captured six points in the Novice division, to prevent the Blue and Gold from being completely shut-out. The Colonists didn't enter many events in the open division, but failed to score any points. Santa Ana won the meet with 26 digits.
