Modern Cars Literally 'Spring'
Along, Thanks to Many Springs
The modern motor car is a thing of quiet purring and quiet clicking, a thing of easy riding and easy rolling. Doors open and close smoothly, seats are firm but comfortable, many parts move in happy unison, and wheel assemblies take rough bumps with a minimum of bouncing, a minimum of jolting.
If you were to look into this quiet clicking and easy riding, points out the National Automobile club, you would find that springs, hundreds of springs of many different designs, have a great deal to do with it all. If your car is one of an average make you would probably find some 265 coil springs in the seats, some 16 in the engine valves, about 11 in the carburetor, about function. The coils for front-end suspension, for instance, are made of precision rolled bar steel that is heated to 1700 degrees, coiled in a coiling machine, quenched in an oil bath, and then passed through an annealing furnace.
After the furnace they are cooled in a water bath, are "shot peened" to give them a hard surface but a flexible core, are carefully tested as to their compression strength, and then carefully matched to make perfect pairs.
And this is just one of the 180 different types of springs that go into the average car. The other types each receive an equally careful treatment-and preparation for their particular job. Their jobs, you see, are important.

And you would find that these springs ran all the way from the tiny ones in the carburetor that weigh only 100 20/5 part of an ounce to the giant ones in the front-end suspension that weigh about 15 pounds each.
You would find, moreover, that these springs differed not only in their size and shape but also in their process of manufacture. Each spring is made from a special steel and given special treatment to prepare it for its special use.

Market Growing
The two young industrialists (Bates is 35, Gregory 40) design, manufacture and market their line of furniture. Much of it is marketed through architects and decorators, but the direct retailing of the line through furniture and department stores is growing. Their products are handled all over the west coast now, and when the new fatcory is put into production, Vista furniture will be marketed on a nation-wide scale, according to Bates.
Both of the Vista partners are Anaheimers, Bates residing at 203 Evelyn dr., Gregory at 1272 E. LaPalma ave.
"Villa Furniture Co., occupying the large building at Paulina and Julanna sts, formerly owned by Anaheim Furniture Co., specializes in furniture for house trailers. The building it owned by Viking Trailer Co. of Anaheim and is leased by Fred Villa, owner of Villa Furniture. Villa employs 14 to 20 persons, depending on the rush of business.
Villa formerly operated a smaller shop at the Ball rd. and Manchester factory of the Viking Co. Among the trailer concerns buying Villa furniture are Viking, Fleetwood, another Anaheim concern, and about seven other out of town trailer manufacturers.
Belmont is Vista Offshoot
Villa resides in Whittier, but expects to move to either Anaheim or Fullerton in the future.
Belmont Furniture Co. handles upholstered furniture exclusively under the Priscilla Furniture label. The operation was begun by Vista Furniture Co., but was sold about 10 months ago to A. N. Skinner when Vista began concentrating on their wrought-iron line.
The early American or "American provincial type furniture is sold directly to retail outlets, mostly outside of Orange county. Some county outlets handle the line, among them Elder Furniture of Anaheim, and outlets in Brea, Placentia and Santa Ana.
Skinner calls Garden Grove home—he attended school there. Later his family moved to Los Angeles, where he became associated with the furniture manufacturing business. He now resides at 11461 Katella ave, Anaheim. His factory employs seven persons.
