Fullerton Boys Club Directors
Jump Gun on Donating to Cause
Even before quotas had been assigned team captains in the building fund campaign for a Fullerton boys' club, $10,195, had been donated, Cecil C. Crew, general campaign chairman, announced this week. The initial boost was provided by 16 members of the Boys' club board of directors.
Crew said $102,271 is needed for the club building.
50-Year Investment
"In effect," he said, "we as a community are investing what amounts to about $2000 a year for the next 50 years. It is a guarantee to our children and grandchildren of a better city in which to live, do business, and raise their families. That $2000 is far less than it costs us as taxpayers to keep the boy in a state correctional institution for one year."
If for no other reason than cold business and the saving of wisted boy-power and money, this fund of $102,271 must and will be raised" he declared.
Campaign team captains were assigned the following quotas for collection: Alan Compton, $3000; Taylor Jacobsen, $6500; Dave Lashmet, $5000; H. W. Muckenthaler, $3000; Charles P. Robinson, $3000; Lloyd S. Verry, $3500; Robert M. Seamans, $7500; Miles'A. Sharkey, $28,000; Dr. E. E. Struve, $6000; Glenn G. Wallers, $6500; Verne Wilkinson, $2500; and Cecil C. Crew, $6000. Another team captain, unnamed yet, will be assigned a $5000 quota.
Fullerton women's team captains and their assigned quotas are Mrs. Oakley Waite, $2500; Mrs. Raymond Thompson, $1500; Mrs. Harvey Spears, $3000; Mrs.A. Leon Anderson, $1000; Mrs.R.M. Gregory, $1700; Mrs.Harvey Cowell, $2000; Mrs.Norman Morgan, $1000; Mrs.Sally Darrow, $1500; Mrs.W.Jack Cadman, $1,-000 and Mrs.F.Gilbert Johnson, $1300.

Appointments Required for VA Examinations
"Effective March 16, 1953, all veterans, excepting emergency cases, desiring medical treatment or examination at the Los Angeles veterans administration regional office must have a pre-arranged appointment," the veterans administration announced today.
When a veteran has been treated in the VA medical clinic, he will be given a return appointment, if necessary. Veterans who apply for treatment irregularly or for the first time are urged to write for an appointment in advance. In emergency cases, the veteran may telephone for an appointment. Excepting emergency cases, veterans appearing without an appointment will be screened by a physician and given a later appointment date.
The new appointment system is designed to save the veteran an unnecessary downtown trip, waiting time, and to permit him to work his treatment or examination into his working schedule.
Providing greater efficiency and effecting a saving of the taxpayers' dollar is expected.
For prompt action, all letters requesting medical appointment at the Los Angeles regional office should be addressed:

Orange County 4-H Clubs Observe National 4-H Week, March 7 to 15
Orange county's 800 members are now taking stock of their projects and goals for the year. Why? This is National 4-H club week, March 7-15, the most important 4-H event of the year, announces Farm Advisor W. A. Humphrey of the University of California.
National 4-H club week calls attention to the American people of the opportunities of rural youth. In 1914 our government invested in rural youth through the 4-H club program. Shortly after this Orange county had its first 4-H club. Hundreds of Orange county boys and girls have, by striving to "Make the Best Better" gained through this program.
This week members from Orange county's 40 4-H clubs are setting their goals for this year. Agriculture and homemaking projects are being checked and started. Plans for the year's activities of 4-H fair, summer camp, and others are determined.
"Working Together for World Understanding" is the 1953 4-H theme. During 4-H club week members become acquainted with the theme and what they can do in helping fulfill it.
President Eisenhower has issued a statement calling attention to this theme, stating in part, "Your membership of more than 2,000,000 signifies a mighty force serving this high purpose.
