Rhythmic Program Entertainment was provided by Thurston Knudson of Hollywood, a rhythm specialist who composed the "Swahill Lament," which formed the background music for the picture, "Snows of Killiman-jaro." Knudson maintained that rhythm, which he defines as "unbroken flow," is the most important factor in doing difficult tasks. "Rhythm has taught me how to do the impossible with case," he said. Rhythm is important in any activity where muscles must move, he said. The basis of all rhythm is the walking step, which Thurston termed the "metronome of human organism." He demonstrated how the swing of legs and arms during walking led to the syncopated beat. Rhythms Demonstrated Using several authentic drums, Thurston demonstrated the Cuban Rotarians Hear Professor Speak On Cultural Aspects of Television "Television as a Cultural Force, or Is it?" was the topic of a talk given Monday noon before Anaheim Rotary club by Dr. W. David Slevers, assistant professor of speech and dramatics at Long Beach State college. Dr. Slevers was the original producer of the Philco Hour on television, has been an actor himself. Pointing out some of TV's bad points the doctor indicated the upset mealtimes, problems, of child discipline, crime programs, possible sysestrain. The cost of proble eyestrain. The cost of program production also counts on the less desirable side of television, some shows costing in the neighborhood of $50,000 for a half hour per week. "I Love Lucy," for instance, which is the top show on television, costs $38,000 per week for production talent alone, without considering the cost of coast-to-coast station time, which sells for about $37,000 for a half hour. Some Shows Good On the good side of TV's ledger, among them Charles Laughton's readings, some of the family-type shows, "Omnibus" on Sunday, extremely good coverage of current news and commentaries, "You Are There," an attempt to dramatize history. Religious programs have lifted the curtain on unlimited possibilities for churches in television. "What can we do about controlling the quality of television?" Write to the stations who present a show of which you approve and tell them about it," he said. "If you want to be critical, don't write—they will put your letter with those of the cranks." As far as children's relations with television is concerned, the best thing a parent can do is try to be selective about which programs the children watch; motivate other activities stemming from the things they have seen... "Rhythm has taught me how to do the impossible with ease," he said. Rhythm is important in any activity where muscles must move, he said. The basis of all rhythm is the walking step, which Thurston termed the "metronome of human organism." He demonstrated how the swing of legs and arms during walking led to the syncopated beat. Rhythms Demonstrated Using several authentic drums, Thurston demonstrated the Cuban rhumba, the Apra Cubano, two different beats of the Brazilian samba, a Haitian voodoo rhythm, the Swahill Lament and a Tahitian war chant. The latter is done with a gas can, a wood block and a deep drum. Program chairman for the day was Jean Beckler. Carol Jaynes and her committee were in charge of the luncheon. William Rheingans Funeral Services Held in Hemet Funeral services for William Rheingans, 72, father of Mrs. Ann M. Davis who resides at 422 S. West St., Anaheim, and who died early Saturday morning at the Anaheim Community Hospital after an extended illness, were conducted from the Harford Funeral Home in Hemet Tuesday at 2 o'clock. Burial followed in the family plot in the San Jacinto Valley cemetery. Survey Taken A quick survey of the Rotarians disclosed that they thought the following programs were good: Firestone Theater, Groucho Marx, Beany, Fred Waring, Liberace, "See It Now," "City at Night," Arthur Godfrey, Burns and Allen and "My Friend Irma." Rotarians selected 12 members from which five new directors will be elected next Monday. They include Gordon Belsel, Max Besler, Hugh Bridgford, Dr. C. Ross Dean, John Ganahl, Barney Jordan, Jim Morris, Ben Stakemiller, Jeff Palin, Oscar Schultz, Claude Owens and Walt Taylor. The new board of directors will then meet following the regular meeting and elect new officers from among themselves. George Hedstrom, Ron Brandon and Claude Russell served as the election committee.
