BUY OR SELL-- Get FAST RESULTS! Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN G. NEUBAUER And a proverb haunts my mind As a spell is cast, "The mill cannot grind With the water that is past." —Sarah Doudney. INSPIRATIONAL — Is there anything whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already old time, which was before us.—Ecc. 1:10. INFORMATION — Though you'd like to know what baseball men are up against when they put a team through spring training. Not only do they have to contract for a ball park, but they've got to find hotel accommodations for their retinue. Most cities—Anaheim is no exception—do not have adequate hotel facilities to accommodate a ball club for a month. Another thing that faces management, is where to feed the players. There are so few Union cafes and restaurants in the smaller communities. This may seem to be an incidental, but it is one baseball men must wrestle with each spring. There's a lot of work to be done before the press photogets click their pictures on opening day. QUIZZICALLY—Which is the richest community in the county? Huntington Beach has more per capita wealth than any other community in the county. Reason: oil ... What is the wettest place in the county? Newport Beach. According to the liquor tax fees, Riding the CAPITOL CIRCUIT with your 75th Dist. Assignment Le Roy E. Lynn Jr. The mall rolls in! In recent weeks, we have received many letters, particularly from Farm Bureau groups in the northern part of the state, requesting that the state postpone the building of all proposed San Francisco Bay area bridges until a complete economic and engineering survey can be made to investigate the practicability of solid-fill crossings. A solid-fill crossing of the southern portion of the Bay would not only provide a location for highways and railroads but would serve as a dam to keep out the salt water and impound the fresh water of the Sacramento river. It is believed by many laymen and engineers alike that such a project is not only feasible but within the realm of practicability. In this way, hundreds of thousands of acre feet of fresh water could be made available to millions of Californians. It is considered feasible to eventually bring some of this water all the way to Southern California should the Colorado river become inadequate—as many experts foresee. A bill has been introduced in the Assembly which calls for a survey to accomplish this desired investigation. It would be interesting to know that a man named Reber, an engineer, for many years has been advocating a tremendous and far reaching program of construction throughout the San Francisco Bay region. This is commonly referred to as the Reber Plan. Business Services Electrical Repairing "HOUSE OF LIGHTS" Appliance Service Fast dependable service on repairing of washing machines, wringers & auto. (Pick-up & del.), irons, toastern, vacuum cleaners, fans, waffle irons, elec. ranges, motors rewound. "If it has a wire we'll repair it." PHONE 4070 116 N. We need High School graduates between the ages of 18 and 45 for regular, full-time employment as CONSTRUCTION HELPERS Good starting salaries, excellent opportunities for advancement, paid vacations, paid holidays QUIZZICALLY—Which is the richest community in the county? Huntington Beach has more per capita wealth than any other community in the county. Reason: oil... What is the wettest place in the county? Newport Beach. According to the liquor tax fees, the beach city consumes more beverages than any place outside of Santa Ana. Santa Ana has many more people... And the dryest? Tustin... Why was Anaheim Landing abandoned as a seaport? Silt filled in the bay, making it impossible for ocean-goining ships to use the harbor. Through dredging operations during the war, the Navy deepened the channel and made a well-protected "Harbor" out of the place early day Anaheimers selected. PEOPLE—Hubert Singer is now a driver's license man. Anaheim remember him when he peddled Coco Colas for Lou Hypes. Was quite a base ball player in his day at Whittier and Fullerton college. Now resides in Yorba Linda... Martin Echeto, the 20-40 club gear, says: "Why y wouldn't know Yorba Linda any more! We've got two housing projects going—one is for seven houses and the other is for twelve." Another Yorba Lindan, Tom Dollardhle, is now going to Fresno. He's learning criminology and stuff like that there... Frosty Younger and the Boyd Brothers—Alvin and Edwin—are in the air corps. They enlisted. Quite good athletes all three of 'em... La Habra's Tony Padilla who only last year signed a bonus baseball contract, is now under contract to Uncle Sam at Camp Roberts... Jess Flores is in the market for a cantina in his home town. He's trying to do something for the kids of La Habra and has dug down into his own sock to further a number of kids' educational interests. STUFF — Fullerton college is getting a $492,470 science building. Work will begin in June or July... Dr. Arnold Beckman of the Beckman enterprises which is establishing a factory between La Habra and Brea north of Fullerton is a Cal Tech man. More than that he's a member of the Cal Tech board... Bill Roberts, the La Habra city councilman, objects to Fullerton City limits being pushed all the way to La Habra. It's a deal similar to the Anaheim-Fullerton strip fight which was started when certain folks wanted to be annexed to one town and their neighbors wanted to become part of the water all the way to Southern California should the Colorado river become inadequate—as many experts foresee. The presently contemplated solid-fill causeway is not as elaborate, of course, but would be a step toward water conservation and more adequate highways. The cost? No one has as yet come forth with a reliable estimate, but it is claimed that it would be so little, if any, more than a bridge, that it would be a sound investment. We shall keep you informed as further developments occur on this program. Ex-County Planner Hired by SA Charles H. Diggs, who recently resigned as county planning director, has been hired by the city of Santa Ana as planning consultant, on a part-time basis. He will receive $300 per month. Diggs, a resident of Laguna Beach, was unanimously recommended to the city council by the city planning commission. His duties will call for his attendance at all sessions of the planning commission and his availability two or three days a week as consultant. His contract with the city operates on a month-to-month basis. Mrs. Melvin Hilgenfeld is to be congratulated for having won a life membership to the P-TA. Her outstanding public service was recognized. She earned the honor through hard work. Congratulations... Anahi may not have a championship cross country team, but Sam Keith has a champion in Dick Reed, holder of the school record. Reed will probably romp home ahead of the field at Huntington Beach this afternoon in the second annual Sunset league cross-country meet. TRIBUTE—Death called Walter Louis Hoehn, 32, Valencia Hi athletic coach and instructor. Services are being held this afternoon at the Friends church, Yorba Linda. The Whittier college graduate was well-liked at Placentia where he made a lot of friends during the last four years. His teams played hard. His ability as a coach was recognized. The lack of material made it impossible for him and little Valencia to get to the top wring. But he was a strategist, a sportsman and a great competitor. He served youth and was an outstanding example to his athletes.
