Copyright 1953 by Universal Radio and TV Features Synd.-Tom E. Danson TV "Comedy Hour Producer Moans The Blues over Responsibilities By TOM E. DANSON HOLLYWOOD — "Twenty-seven years ago I was playing the French horn in the Peabody high school orchestra in Pittsburgh," Samuel Fuller, executive producer of both the "Comedy Hour" and the "All-Star Revue" (which may be dropped soon), on NBC-TV, was moaning to me the other day. And with good reason. For Sam Fuller handles more money and more high priced talent in the TV business than any other man with similar duties. He also has more headaches than any other person in the industry. "Some producers have a full quota of troubles working with one show and one star. But with me, you can multiply by 15." Sam isn't kidding, either. His roster of stars includes Eddie Cantor, Bob Hope, Jimmy Durante, Martin and Lewis, Donald O'Connor, Abbott and Costello, George Jessel, Martha Raye, Talulah Bankhead, Judy Canova, the Ritz brothers—and others as the season progresses. Each show of course, presents Sam with a completely new set of difficulties since there is no continuity from show to show. One week he's caught up in Jimmy Durante's type of humor and suddenly he's thinking in terms of fast talking Bob Hope, or wild and rany, Martin and Lewis. "It's the proverbial three ring circus," sighed Sam. Every week there is one show in rehearsal and one show in production. It would make matters much simpler if only I were twins." There's another huge obstacle Producer Sam Fuller continually faces that most TV viewers aren't aware of. One that bothers all producers of variety-type shows. That's the job of booking good, new, fresh acts to support the stars. "New York TV shows can go to dozens of night clubs and hire top acts in a flash," Sam told me, "but here, we find a totally different situation. The good acts don't come to the coast because there are so few places they can play. And it costs a lot of money to transport an act here from the East for a one-shot, and pay their way back again. But there are plenty of satisfactions to the whole thing. Sam conceded. He's working with the finest talent in the world and he can never complain of a dull moment. Besides that, he has the satisfaction of knowing that he's turned out dozens of top-rated shows that millions upon millions of people have enjoyed. "It's just that sometimes," said Sam, the wistful look coming back into his eye. "I think I never should have left Pittsburgh. I probably would have been a great French horn player by now."
