Letter from British Cowboy Star Gives Picture of Television in UK
HOLLYWOOD — In yesterday's column I started a letter from the British cowboy radio television star Steve Larrabee. At the close of the column, he was describing the short hours of TV transmission there. His letter continues: "In spite of this (to you Americans) short programme TV is very popular here, and people about the same social position as in U.S.A. have sets. There is also the usual campaign against ruining children's eyesight, destroying conversation and making us race of canned entertainment lovers, etc., etc.
Current favourites on TV are Muffin the Mule (a puppet donkey), Tommy Cooper (a burlesque magician), Hank (a cowboy puppee) and of course, the old standby, the horse opera, generally Hopper or Tex Ritter.
Most set here seem to have nine to 12 inch screens although there are some smaller ones in use. There are too, a lot of gadgets about. One is a magnifier made of plastic which fits over the end of the tube; another is a colour gimmick which is a transparent screen of plastic grades in colours from blue through flesh colour down to green in stripes.
The theory is I suppose that at a picture is transmitted of a man in a field, you will see it in natural colors Unfortunately, this would not quite work out on a face close-up. To be fair, I must admit that I have not tried this gadget yet, but there seems to be a sale for it.
"We have on-TV male and female announcers." As you may know, in England if anyone speaks extremely well we say he speaks BBC English This is our unwritten standard for language.
"These announceers then speak extremely well (on top of this the female ones are extremely pretty). Mac Donald Hobley is favourite announcement He is a man who has certain charm and an informal chatty style."
Before I wind up I must introduce you to our star TV performer Gilbert Harding. This guy seems to be in constant danger of being 'on-the-carpet' for his short temper and outspoken remarks. He takes par with What’s My Line and similar shows on both TV and sound radio (steam radio, as we call it).
Well there it is in a nut shell Non-commercial radio andTV with a tax to own either one three stations sound one channel TV Poor choice? Yes but no pleading imploring voices urging you to buy ‘Gritty Granuals for gritty gravy’ Personally I prefer variety of American radio but quite frankly the majority here do not go for advertising and will fight tooth and nail to prevent British radio going that way.
I would like to thank you along with other swell people I met on my visit, for really grand time,and I hope it will not be too long before we meet again Steve.”
Golly,with nine to 12 inchcreens,now wonder they complain about eyesight over there!
