March of Dimes Beginnings Told By Comedian Eddie Cantor
By TOM DANSON
HOLLYWOOD — There have been quite a few successful writing teams in the history of show business. Gilbert and Sullivan made quite a pair, and Rodgers and Hammerstein work like fine meshing gears. Kaufman and Hart knocked out hit broadway plays and even our own Lawrence and Lee, coscriptors on "The Railroad Hour" and dozens of TV shows, are worth noting.
But perhaps one of the greatest collaborations of all time took place between Eddie Cantor and the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt. For it was the combined thoughts of both that brought forth the phrase which was going to mean hope to thousands of sufferers of infantile paralysis. The phrase: The March of Dimes.
I have been after Eddie Cantor for a long time, for it was the original thought to publish this story at the start of the March of Dimes campaign, but Cantor is a mighty busy guy these days. I finally caught up with him during one of his rehearsals for the "Comedy Hour" show, scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 15. He related to me the story of how he and the late president hit upon the famous slogan.
It seems that in 1938, the late J. F. T. "Lefty" O'Connor, for later a judge in California, visited Eddie at the request of President Roosevelt and asked for his help on the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. As O'Connor outlined the plan, a million people were to subscribe a dollar a year to support the foundation at Warm Springs, Ga.
Eddie listened carefully and then made a counter-suggestion to "Jeffy" O'Connor. The comic proposed it might be a better plan to solicit the help of the entire nation, asking for 10 cents each to be forwarded to the president at the White House.
"I can see millions and millions of people from every state, city and town in the nation cooperating," Cantor had told O'Connor.
Later Cantor was summoned to the White House by Roosevelt. In the president's study the two discussed ways of implementing the idea.
Cantor was fired with enthusiasm for his idea. "You can't ten, Mr. President," he said, "one day we might kick infantile paralysis altogether with this March of Dimes."
Instantly, Roosevelt sensed the power of the last few words of Eddies remarks as a slogan. Mason of Dimes and this is how the phrase was born.
RELIEF Demands Strain Salvation Army Facilities
Needy and handicapped men—many of them lacking sufficient clothing to keep them warm—daily are thronging the Salvation Army Social Service Center here seeking food, shelter and jobs, according to Brig Ranson D Gifford, manager.

Needy and handicapped men—many of them lacking sufficient clothing to keep them warm—daily are thronging the Salvation Army Social Service Center here seeking food, shelter and jobs, according to Brig Ranson D Gifford, manager.
Because of the vast amount of direct family relief it has provided, the center is running very short on many items—especially clothing, shoes, furniture, bedding, stoves, rugs, dishes and home appliances. Brig Gifford said.
"We are more than willing to meet the exceptionally heavy demands made upon us for all kinds of relief, but the only way we will be able to meet the continuous and mounting demands is for local citizens to send in salvage items," the Salvation Army leader said.
"The Social Service Center is as near as your telephone. A call to 4631 will bring a Red Shield truck to your door."
Brig Gifford emphasized that the Salvation Army is a nonprofit organization which has given unbroken service to the needy, without regard for creed or color, for 88 years.
By providing for men who otherwise would be required to seek county or state aid, the center's social rehabilitation program helps lessen the tax load. Brig Gifford pointed out. In 1952 the center gave 258,000 hours of occupational therapy, 59,622 meals, 21,110 lodgings and a vast amount of direct relief.
In addition to this "routine" service, the Salvation Army stands ready to help in any emergency. Brig Gifford said. Last month the Salvation Army provided around-the-clock canteen and evacuation services for nine days in the disaster created by battering waves at Redondo Beach.
During the emergency, Salvation Army workers served 40,000 cups of soup, coffee and chocolate and 10,000 doughnuts, sandwiches and sweet rolls. Redondo Beach officials gave the Salvation Army high praise for its work.
Naguib’s Council Assumes Supreme Power in Egypt
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Premier Gen Mohamed Naguib's reform government announced Tuesday that Egypt is now operating under a provisional constitution with supreme powers vested in his 13-man military council.
The council, assisted by the present 16-man civilian cabinet, will exercise acts of sovereignty during the three-year transitional period proclaimed last month. The cabinet will help shape matters of policy.
The transitional period was announced after Naguib discarded Egypt's 1923 constitution as obsolete and dissolved all political parties on the ground they endangered national unity. This left the strongman premier, his council of Army officers and cabinet ministers as sole legislative and executive authorities.
National Guidance Minister Fuad Galal made public the text of the provisional charter at a news conference. He said it did not mean any change in Egypt's present monarchistic regime and that a regent will continue to act for baby King Ahmed Fuad.
