Pension Promoter George McLain Denies Receiving Personal Gains
LOS ANGELES (AP)—Testimony that George H. McLain, old age pension promoter, declared he was making no personal profit from the movement given in superior court Thursday by Edward Raiden, an attorney.
Raiden is suing McLain and Mrs. Myrtle Williams, his associate and for a time State Director of social welfare, for $27,745 attorney fees. He alleges both have made large profits from their pension activities.
Mrs. Williams got the state job when McLain's pension plan was adopted by the voters in 1948, but lost it when the initiative law was repealed by the people at the next election.
Raiden testified he agreed in 1947 to give McLain legal advice for the use of a telephone, secretary and office space in the pension movement's Los Angeles headquarters building.
He said McLain assured him he was working 16 hours a day, seven days a week for "the old folks" and was making no personal profit.
Mr. McLain told me he had become interested in pension work because his own aged father had been 'pushed around' while trying to get a pension for himself," Raiden testified.
He said McLain told him he and Mrs. Williams started their pension activities with $200 she furnished in 1941; that she received no compensation and that McLain was paid $40 a week and expenses and given living quarters in the loft of the movement's headquarters.
"He told me his wife had continued to work as a beauty operator to make ends meet," Raiden said.
The balance scale for weighing may be more than 7000 years old.

Kwikset Holds Speed Contest
A record time of one minute 35 seconds for installing a Kwikset lock was set recently during the Kwikset lock installation contest at the National Association of Home Builders in Chicago.
The Anaheim lockset manufacturing firm in its sales promotions emphasizes the quick installation features of Kwikset locks and Kwikset installation aids as time and money savers for builders.
Winning time for installing a Kwikset lock was set by Earl M. Hallgren, building contractor of Des Plaines, Ill., who won first prize a $1000 defense bond.
During the convention, more than 600 members of the building industry participated in the Kwikset installation contest. More than 80 per cent of all contestants were able to install a Kwikset lock in three minutes or less. These contestants received a Kwikset fountain pen and stand.
The contest included the complete installation of a Kwikset lock except for the strike. Power drills and Kwikset installation aids were used by all the contestants.

Jordan Outlines Plans for 1953 Red Cross Fund Drive Campaign
At the monthly board meeting of Anaheim chapter, American Red Cross, Wednesday evening, Barney Jordan, fund drive chairman, outlined his plans for the campaign. His organization is almost complete and will be ready to start early in March.
For the Blood Program, Mrs. P. H. Nelson, chairman, reported that a mobile unit will be at Thomas Jefferson school on Feb. 27, Kwikset Company will sponsor this visit, and donors will be largely from that company.
Miss Frieda Janss, camp and hospital chairman, announced that the March 10 meeting of the Regional Hospital council will be held in Anaheim at the Ebell clubhouse. She gave detailed reports on the holiday parties held for veterans at Long Beach hospital, and servicemen at Terminal Island base, in which volunteers from Anaheim chapter had a part.
Tex Middleton, water safety chairman, told the board that, due to the heavy attendance at the two swimming pools, it will be necessary to send three students to Red Cross aquatic schools, so as to have enough instructors to handle the children who will be taught to swim. The attendance last summer was the largest in the history of the chapter. These students will be selected later.
Mrs. Paul Davidson was elected as secretary of the board, replacing Mrs. Foster Warwick who is unable to continue the work.
For Junior Red Cross, Miss Minnie Spicer reported that the students in the high school had filled 20 gift boxes, with the Colonist Knights purchasing the necessary materials, and these had been shipped to Area office at San Francisco to be sent overseas. Girls in the high school had baked 25 dozen cookies which were sent to the County hospital. Eight schools are now enrolled in the Allness of Spirit Christian School Lesson Sunday.

Occasion for Dr. Evans' appearance is the annual marriage conference sponsored by the college's Associated Women Students organization. He will speak to the student body at 11 a.m. in the college auditorium. Later he will be available to students for question periods on his subject, "Marriage and Family Relations."
The speaker's understanding of young people is partially traceable to his own youth. In college he was active in athletics; he was chosen an all-conference and all-state end in California football and all-conference and all-southern center in basketball.
At present minister of the Hollywood Presbyterian church, Dr. Evans is a nationally known religious leader.
Last year Dr. Evans was selected speaker of the year in religion by the Tau Kappa Alpha, national college honor society in speech.
An acknowledged expert in marriage and family relations problems, Dr. Evans has lectured in many colleges and universities on the subject.
In education, Dr. Evans is also active. He has been a member of the citizens committee which added the Los Angeles board of education in securing a superintendent. The California Association of Secondary School Administrators has recognized his outstanding work with a special award.
In 1952, the minister delivered a series of sermons on Protestantism on the "National Vespers" program. In his own church, he gave a course on "Love, Marriage, and the Home," for which nearly 300 young married people enrolled.
"It is our good fortune to secure Dr. Evans for the marriage conference again," said Miss Marguerite Waters, dean of women. "In speaking to the students almost at once established a warm contact with his wit and his sound philosophy on marriage and family relations."

BRIEFLY—Sen. Thomas Kuchel of Anaheim is getting star billing in Lincoln Day celebration speeches in Southern California; Kuchel, like Vice President Richard Nixon started his oratory while attending high school in Orange county... They've painted "Signals Ahead" signs at the approaches of the "coroner's corner"—Orangethorpe and Lemon.
But it will be at least several weeks before there will be signals there... At long last,' Santa Ana street has' gotten a partial resurfacing job... Signals for Broadway and Lemon street intersection is something Administrator Keith Murdoch should give top priority. A lot of Anaheimers are for it.
PERSONALITIES—Oscar Heying.
The successful Anaheim apothecary is one of those busy persons who is never too busy to be genial, considerate. His business interests are exacting, and so are his civic duties as an Anaheim city councilman.

He was an outstanding diver during his high school days and now is Texas' best university swimming and water-polo coaches... Frank (Panchito) Zuniga, who lost his twin brother in Anaheim's big flood, could be one of the best athletes if he wanted to excel in everything he tries.

Allness of Spirit Christian Science Lesson Sunday
"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." These words of Jesus from John (4:24) are the Golden Text of the Sunday Lesson-Sermon on "Spirit" in all branches of The Mother Church.
That God's love can be utilized and enjoyed through spiritual understanding is assured in John's first epistle (4:12, 13) where he writes, "If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit."
Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Spirit, God, has created all in and of Himself." "Everything in God's universe expresses Him... He is all-inclusive, and is reflected by all that is real and eternal and nothing else. He fills all space, and it is impossible to conceive of such omnipresence and individuality except as infinite Spirit or Mind." (pp. 335, 331).

YOUR SHARE OF AMERICA IS GROWING BIGGER!
Now the Value of Your Maturing Series E Bonds Grows For Ten More Years...at 3% Interest
Do you have any United States Series E Defense Bonds maturing this month? Now they can still go on earning interest—at 3% compounded semiannually—for ten more years! And you need not do anything at all with your Bonds. The continued earning period is automatic.
The Bond you got for $18.75 can now pay you $33.67 ... a $37.50 Bond will be worth $67.34 ... and so on. Your return may amount to as much as 80% on your original investment!
This applies to all Series E Bonds—these you already own and those you're now investing in. Every Bond you invest in now starts earning interest sooner and matures earlier, too.
Any Series E Bond may still be redeemed at any time after you have held it for two months. But the smart thing to do is to hold on to your Bonds, as you hold on to savings in any form.
Are you one of the 7½ million Americans who are saving regularly with Defense Bonds through the Payroll Savings Plan? Doing something concrete to make their dreams of the future come true? If not, why not start now? Invest in Bonds regularly through the Payroll Savings Plan in the shop or office where you work. It's one sure way to save because it saves something out of every check before you have a chance to spend it.
You may ask your pay office to save as little as 25c a week for you, or as much as you are able. If you can save just $5 a week regularly through the Plan, in five years you will have $1,367.90 ... in 9 years and 8 months, you'll have $2,850.70 ... in 19 years and 8 months, $6,872.45! All in safe, sure Series E Bonds.
No matter how small your income, you can't afford not to put something aside for yourself. So join the Payroll Savings Plan where you work today. Or, if you are self-employed, start the Bond-A-Month Plan where you bank. Strengthen your own future and that of your country by saving your money through Bonds.
