BUY OR SELL-- Get FAST RESULTS Assembly Committee to Get Plans For Reducing Budget $20 Million SACRAMENTO (CNS) — Specific recommendations for chopping $20,000,000 off Gov. Earl Warren's $1,326,851,805 budget for Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Happiness is the only good. The place to be happy is here. The time to be happy is now. The way to be happy is to make others so. —Robert Ingersoll. INSPIRATIONAL — The love of money is the root of all evil. I Tim. 6:10. FREEWAY Seems like there's always some opposition to progress. Now that the proposed route of the Sepulveda freeway through Orange county has been announced, farmers are opposed to it because valuable farmland would be ruined. Robert Heil is heading the opposition to the route. They plan to circulate a petition against the project. Seems like history is repeating itself. Wasn't there considerable opposition to the development of the Manchester (Santa Ana freeway) when it was first proposed? Of course. While the development of a freeway system will be given the assembly way, and means committee when it meets here Monday for first consideration of the document. The recommendations will come from legislative auditor, A. Alan Post, who is at work in the problem of attempting to balance the huge expenditure with income and surplus. Basic problem confronting the legislators to avoid new taxes arises from the fact that proposed general fund expenditures will exceed anticipated revenue by about $91,000,000. There is a prospective surplus of $66,229,545 estimated for June 30, 1953, which would take up part of the slack but the state still faces an operating deficit of $20 million. Another complicating factor is that Gov. Warren has recommended appropriation of $5,500,000 outside of the budget for a new program of $75 monthly state aid for the permanently and totally disabled. Should the legislature approve this program, the prospective deficit will increase to more than $25 million. The governor has suggested a 2-cent-a-pack tax on cigarettes to make up the deficit, and also increases in alcoholic beverage and horse racing taxes. However, there is opposition to his program, and many feel no new taxes are necessary at this session, except those to step up the highway construction program. LEGAL NOTICES BRIEFLY NOTED—Brig. Gen. Updegrove stopped over en route to Korea where he will assume command of the 20th airforce. The general, his wife and daughter, visited the J. F. Lemons. Mrs. William Lyle of Yorba Linda can thank Richard Nixon for the privilege of attending the GOP blowout in Washington October day. He saw to it that she got three tickets of his personal allotment. Incidentally, Bob Williams played football with Nixon more years than he likes to recall. Sam L. Collins, former speaker of the state assembly, registered as lobbyist for the Union Oil Co. Ted Craig of Brea also became a corporation representative when he retired from politics. PASSING PARADE—Dr. Howard Tews. The eminent Anaheim DDS is about to lose a daughter as Norma Jean Tews' engagement to David Walkley was announced. Time shore flies. It wasn't so long ago that he was the toast of the coast. The husky Anaheim was the hottest pitcher in the nocturnal softball circles. Jim Wright, the Anaheim recreational leader, may be a schoolteacher, but he'll continue to work for: Don Derr's recreational program. Ken Penner is no longer with the Cardinal baseball chain. Rumor has it that he may make his headquarters at La Palma park this spring. QUIZZICALLY—Remember Guy Parham, former publisher of Herald-Express. He was born in Anaheim, did chores for Hypolite Cahen after school. He also kept books for the Eugene Meyer Co. His father, Richard M. Barham, came to Anaheim in 1873 and was the proprietor of the Planters hotel. Besides being a William Randolph Hearst publisher, now that the proposed route of the Sepulveda freeway through Orange county has been announced, farmers are opposed to it because valuable farmland would be ruined. Robert Heil is heading the opposition to the route They plan to circulate a petition against the project. Seems like history is repeating itself. Wasn't there considerable opposition to the development of the Manchester (Santa Ana treeway) when it was first proposed? Of course. While the development of a freeway system may prove detrimental to a few it would prove beneficial to many. Southern California's development has been built up by the automobile and adequate highways must be developed to insure safety and avoid any undue traffic bottlenecks. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. QUIZZICALLY Remember Guy Parham, former publisher of the Herald-Express. He was born in Anaheim, did chores for Hypolite Cahen after school. He also kept books for the Eugene Meyer Co. His father, Richard M. Barham, came to Anaheim in 1873 and was the proprietor of the Plante's hotel. Besides being a William Randolph Hearst publisher, Barham was also a custom-broker. In 1876 Anaheim had a population of 2000, but transportation kept the town from becoming a metropolis in its own right. El Monte was supposed to be the city to grow, but Los Angeles did. MUSINGS Wonder what August Langerberger would say if he could see Anaheim today? The man who married Juan Pacifico Quiveras' daughter in 1850 is credited with being an influence in the founding of Anaheim. The site of the present growing industrial - residential community was grazing land when George Hanson bought 1165 acres Sept. 1857 for a group of San Franciscoans. None thought that their venture would develop as it did. But they had faith in the future. Anaheimers can be thankful that they laid such a firm foundation for the old home town. PROGRESS NOTE — Sophie Burdock McCormick sold three acres of the Burdorf home place (n.e. corner Orangehorse and Lemon) for an undisclosed sum. Henry Burdorf, the pioneer Anaheim rancher, and one of the developers of the Cajon irrigation system which was later incorporated with the Anaheim Union Water Co., bought the land at $5 an acre. He was part of the colorful past that made possible the productive present and promises to be a glorious future. What will the new owner do with the property? "At the price he paid for it, it's almost certain that he won't put a subdivision on it" our informant said.
