"If I should be reliably informed that heaven was closed to me but were allowed to choose any other spot in which to spend eternity, I should think twice about Truk." These words are from the pen of a globe-trotter by the name of Willard Price, who goes on to state: "It's name is not musical, but its sea, land and sky are a symphony." Mr. Price, you have struck a responsive chord in this piece of clay. Ever since that wizard dream-like period during our war with Japan, when I was shunted hither and thither aboard troop transports in the Tropic Seas, a strange yearning for the soft trade winds and the sunny beaches has never been stilled. The island of Truk, in the Carolines, a speck in the vast tropical island chain of Micronesia, was a formidable Japanese naval and air base during the war, but now surely it is an idyllic place awaiting the adventurous and the stout of heart possessed of the fortitude to shuck off the strait-jackets of civilization and head back to nature, the basic things of life; and, to be more specific, what my Republican friends call "rugged individualism." We Americans basically are of pioneer strain, and it has long been a mystery to me why we let the Pacific shore stem our march westward. Out there in the Pacific there are literally millions of acres of islands waiting for us, if we could but summon up courage enough to forsake the Schick electric razor, Spade Cooley, Ajax, the Foaming Cleanser, and Bisquick. My announcement down here at the Gazette the other evening to the effect that I was heading for the South Seas before next green-up time was received with derision and disbelief. It is absolutely out of reason to think of forsaking Oleomargarine, Gaffers & Sattler gas ranges, radio, TV, and 7-cents-a gallon gasoline taxes to go somewhere and live like a heathen. Why, they said, you're kidding! I don't intend to go to the island Glenn Terrell Graduates from Army School Pvt. Glenn G. Terrell, whose wife, Rose Marie, lives at 20128 Miller ave., Euclid, Ohio, has graduated from the Engineer Leaders' course at Fort Belvoir. Va. Terrell, who entered the Army last June, is the son of E. C. Terrell of 1217 E. Grove st., Fullerton, Calif. His mother, Mrs. Marie Terrell lives at 735 Hamilton, Cleveland, Ohio. H. J. Interment will be made in Anaheim cemetery. SATURDAY A.M. 7:00 A.M. It is absolutely out of reason to think of forsaking Olcomargarine, Gaffers & Sattler gas ranges, radio, TV, and 7-cents-a gallon gasoline taxes to go somewhere and live like a heathen. Why, they said, you're kidding! I don't intend to go to the island of Truk, particularly because doubtless it is too thickly populated, being a strategically-placed spot. Instead, I have two islands pin-pointed on the map which sound interesting. One is Kapingamarangi, and the other is Blup Blup. Think of the sensation you would create back here by sending Christmas cards post-marked Blup Blup! When you bring things like this up, the captives of civilization, content to fight mortgages and grow ulcers all their lives, always try to throw cold water. "But what about the typhoons?" they ask. To which I answer: "Well, what about them?" I had just as soon weather a tropical typhoon as a presidential campaign. The typhoon would probably whiff my grass shack away, but it wouldn't give me hypertension, ulcers, and cause me to lose old and trusted friends. The greatest deterrent to this projected emigration to the great Southern Sea is wrapped up in the form of a sturdy 6-year-old son. What about his education? But I have an answer for that. Weighed against some of the pap they teach the kdls nowadays, he might emerge far more erudite from studying the metamorphosis of flying fishes and land-crabs, and communing with the great triumvirate of land, sea and sky. OK then, it's a deal. Unfurl the main braces and let's get out of here. Leave the Ajax Foaming Cleanser to home, but for gosh sakes don't forget the rum! SATURDAY A. M. 7:00 A. M.
