Rate Increase Hearing Resumes Today LOS ANGELES—Public hearings on Southern Counties Gas Co.'s proposal to increase household gas bills in seven counties some 88 cents monthly will resume here today before Commissioner Harold P. Huls and Examiner Manley W. Edwards. Three days of hearings, during which Commission gas engineers and financial experts will testify on studies and reports made on company-wide operations, are scheduled at the Commission courtroom at 145 South Spring st., beginning at 10 a.m. Southern Counties Co. seeks a $4,852,000 increase in annual gross revenue to offset a general rise in cost of operation which it claims has reduced its rate of return to 4.5 per cent. The company seeks a 6.5 per cent return on its investment. Cross-examination of company officials who testified at hearings last November is also scheduled by the CPUC staff, with representatives of the city of Los Angeles slated to take the witness stand on Thursday. Last April, the Commission denied the company's request for a $3,390,000 increase in annual gross revenue, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the California Supreme Court. CPUC authorization, effective Jan. 1, 1953, allowed the company a $1,120,000 annual gross revenue increase, to offset the proposed additional cost of Texas gas delivered to the company. The Texas gas increase proposal is now pending before the Federal Power Commission. WITNESS—Thousands of Anaheimers and millions of Americans viewed inauguration of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower as president yesterday. People from coast to coast and border to border saw the festivities through the miracle of television made possible by the free enterprise system whereby all may benefit from the technological advancements of science. This Last April, the Commission denied the company's request for a $3,390,000 increase in annual gross revenue, a decision that was subsequently upheld by the California Supreme Court. CPUC authorization, effective Jan. 1, 1953, allowed the company a $1,120,000 annual gross revenue increase, to offset the proposed additional cost of Texas gas delivered to the company. The Texas gas increase proposal is now pending before the Federal Power Commission. Upon determination of a new rate by the federal body, a refund to customers may be possible after final determination and authorization from the CPUC. Under the Southern Counties proposal, some 400,000 customers would be affected in Orange, Legislators to Decide Adult Education Issue SACRAMENTO (CNS)—A definite decision as to whether or not the frills will be cut out of adult education will face legislators on their return here next month for the second half of the 1953 session. A series of bills introduced by Senator Harold T. Johnson, Placer county during the closing hours of the first half, would prohibit use of state funds for adult entertainment and recreational classes, and would also take the profit motive out of adult education for the various districts. Under terms of the measures, however, districts could continue any type of classes they so desired, but would be unable to collect state funds under average daily attendance allotments, for certain courses. The measures were introduced as the result of a long investigation into adult education by a senate interim committee, headed by Johnson. He was aided by Senators Paul L. Byrne, Chico; Nelson S. Dilworth, Riverside county; Burt W. Busch, Lake county and Verne W. Hoffman, San Joaquin county. During the investigation, it was revealed some school districts conducted classes held by some to be unessential, such as ping-pong, folk dancing, golf club swinging, guitar playing, fly tieing, movie appreciation and others, some of which allegedly were for the purpose of building up average daily attendance allotments from the state. Johnson said his bill includes a definition of adult education, a definition of an adult, and would eliminate allocations to school districts for adult education classes in jails, prisons or hospitals, but would not prevent the district from conducting such thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveeth thee.—Ex. 20:12. This was the first presidential inauguration to be televised. Through its medium, people can become better acquainted with the men at the helm of the ship of state. Though television is still in its infancy it is a force that helps folks to see the things they read about in their newspapers — still the greatest news disseminating media ever developed. BRIEFLY NOTED—Walt Taylor, former YMCA secretary, is now one Anaheim's leading businessmen. He sells the goods of the woods. Walt is still interested in the Y, but he can't devote his entire time to that enterprise ... Arval Morris, he Anaheim industrialist, is another YMCA backer. These men were active members during their high school and college days and have carried on ... Dick Gay, the benkker, who doubles as chamber of commerce president, predicts a record year for Anaheim building. That's no prediction. It's a foregone conclusion ... Maynard Glenn spent a little time in the hospital lately. That's no place for a chef. PEOPLE—Buena Park's leading Republican is happy. Franklin Sullivan is really well pleased with the outcome of the election. Frank Vessels was quite successful with his quarter horse racing venture. The Los Alamitos promoter is looking forward to a bigger and better parti-muttuel handle this coming season. A total of $363,888.458 was wagered on the horses on all tracks last year. That was a lot of money but it was no record ... Mellie Weaver is ample proof that a really busy person can always find time to be of service to Anaheim and Anaheimers ... Adolf Schopee could tell you that Kwikset is a new concern as far as years are concerned, but is it manned by men and women who are proud to be part of the team. A satisfied employee is a good employee. QUIZZICALLY — Anaheimers are an inquisitive lot. They ask many of the same historical questions over and over again. Finstance folks seems to be very much interested in Anaheim's first mayor. Max Von Stroble who a Johnson said his bill includes a definition of adult education, a definition of an adult, and would eliminate allocations to school districts for adult education classes in jails, prisons or hospitals, but would not prevent the district from conducting such classes with proper funds. Marine Jailed For Reckless Driving, Escape Everett Irvin Tanner, El Toro marine, was jailed at 2:30 a.m. Saturday by Santa Ana police on a charge of reckless driving and escape after he had returned to the scene of his crime, according to Santa Ana police. Office's investigating a traffic collision at Fourth and Garfield sts., at 2:30 a.m., stopped Tanner when he drove up at a reckless pace, they said. He refused to sign a ticket and demanded to be taken to headquarters. They told him to turn his car around and be ready. Instead, he disappeared on Garfield st. Officers pursued but he turned off his lights and they couldn't find him. So roadblocks were established about the area. Shortly afterward, Tanner reappeared at the scene of the accident and remarked innocently "It's dark waiting up on that street and I didn't want to stay there." "We'll take you where you'll be safe," said the officer. HILGENFELD MORTUARY Faithful Courteous Service 120 E Broadway Anaheim PHONE 4105 QUIZZICALLY — Anaheimers are an inquisitive lot. They ask many of the same historical questions over and over again. First-time folks seems to be very much interested in Anaheim's first mayor, Max Von Stroble who a major in the German revolution and fought along side of Carl Schurtz and Fritz Siegel in 1848. He was one of the first advocates of Orange county—only he proposed to call it Anaheim county. He was one of the first to drill for oil in Brea, and even tried to sell Catalina island ... Moses Langley Wickes of Mississippi was another colorful figure in early-day Anaheim. He practiced law until 1878 when he moved to Los Angeles to become a real estator ... Hypolite Cahen operated a general store in Anaheim in 1885 ... One of the biggest early day controversies came from the naming of Euclid ave., in honor of the gentleman who was in on founding of Ontario. "What did Mr. Euclid ever do for Anaheim? more than one old timer has asked. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette Jan. 14. 21, 28. Feb. 4. 1953) No. A-22342 NOTICE TO CREDITORS ESTATE OF HALLIE V.
