OBLONG VIEWS
(From an Egg-Shaped Head
By WALDO HUNTER, P.S.B.
is the fact that he was lifted out of the comparative army of a job as colonel in the Army, jumped over the hill of scores of officers of higher rank and seniority, and probed on the center of the stage of world affairs by the very man whom his political party despised most Franklin D. Roosevelt.
One cannot help wondering where Eisenhower would be today had Roosevelt not been possessed of the shrewdness (or was it intuitiveness?) to pick a good man when he saw one.
We already have been afforded a peek at the more human side of Eisenhower in the "top hat vs. homburg" deal. Not long after the election, I remarked to a friend that it was almost worth the price of losing the election to see a five-star general wearing a high silk hat in public.
This is not to be, however, as the new president will break tradition by wearing a homburg at the inauguration. It could be that his decision springs from a fear ingrained in all generals that they might be laughed at.
Ike's choice of headgear for such a historic occasion will be a great stimulant to the homburg division of the hat industry.
Either the Democrats are sincerely resolved to promote inter-party harmony at the outset of the new regime, or they are asleep.
Not one of them has made any public insinuation that there might be a "homburg lobby" on Capitol Hill.
IT HAS OFTEN been said that the American people will buy anything if it is ballyhooed enough. This is convincingly borne out in
the current "chlorophyll" which has gone from the lotus to the asinine, with no of abating. Helpless under relentless barrage of high-sure television, radio, and magazine ballyhoo, we have GOT to go out and buy some with chlorophyll in it.
Sometimes I wonder what scientific brains can't produce head of cabbage containing much chlorophyll as the ore tube of tooth paste.
A textile firm back ear making men's underwear, imnated with chlorophyll. A concern is putting the stuff brand of men's socks, which under the catchy name of "S feet."
Everyone is chlorophyll-scous. It is getting so once hesitates to work up a good smelly sweat any more. (It especially noticeable in the shop down here at the Gazette.
It is understood that the partment of Agriculture has ducted exhaustive tests on efficacy of chlorophyll as a neutralizer, but despite this search in the nation's capital, a generally accepted fact that atmosphere around Washington is still odoriferous.
Eminent scientists have come with reports that the whole is farce, but there has been noticeable slackening of saffron stuff colored a billious green.

22 Additional Fire Plugs
Fire Chief Alfred A. Arnold of Cypress announced at the Cypress Chamber of Commerce meeting that 22 new fire plugs are being planned for the community if the State Public Utilities commission agrees to raise the rates of the Southern California Water Company 15 per cent. More plugs would lower the insurance rates, Arnold pointed out.
Frank Stewart was appointed by President Don Caul to head the highway and transportation committee. The planning and zoning group will have Frank Mackay as chairman; Dale Kroesen, public relations; Mrs. Earl Essex, membership; Arnold, fire protection committee, sewers and sanitation; Mrs. H. J. G. Kreissler, cards and flowers.
Letters are to be written the county and state road departments asking for help regarding standing water. The county is to be asked to help with the standing water in Cypress Acres, a report on which was given by Stewart. The state letter will concern the ditches north of Lincoln ave., between the Los Angeles county line and Cypress.
Arnold reported on the sewer survey and said that minor changes were being made on the boundaries map of the proposed district under the County Water Act.
