(From an Egg-Shaped Head)

The many followers of this column may have wondered about its absence from the paper for these past several weeks, and an explanation seems in order. Its temporary omission was done as an experiment.
In a bold stroke to raise my rates from nothing to 50 cents per word, on a par with Ernest Hemingway and C. S. Forester, I wagered with the publisher that the Gazette’s circulation would show a decided drop if the column were deleted, and that a deluge of letters would engulf the front office demanding immediate reinstatement of this package of incandescent prose on a tri-weekly basis.
To say that my expectations fell short of the goal is the year’s most massive understatement. When it became apparent that old Egg-Head was no longer writing, the paper’s circulation showed a decided upsurge, and Don Young, our circulation manager, even took me out for a short beer.
The “deluge” of letters failed to materialize, and public reaction to the whole thing gradually mounted in an ever-increasing crescendo until it finally reached a peak of absolute indifference.
I did get two communications. One anonymous party offered me $1 a week if I would continue the experiment indefinitely.
Another wrote: "Greatest civic improvement in Anaheim since installation of sanitary sewers."
There were four rumors that the Chamber of Commerce was planning to strike a plaque honoring me for doing the most in 1952 to make Anaheim a better place to live in.
The entire experiment amounted to a cruel rebuff, but with the
