BUY OR SELL-- Get FAST RESULT IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago January 1878 Ben Sheffield and his sister Miss Fanny, will leave on Monday for Minnesota, to be gone at least two years. The number of young ladies and gentlemen in Anaheim is not so large as to cause a decrease in the number to be looked upon with indifference, especially when the departing ones have become such favorites as Mr. and Miss Sheffield. In expressing the hope that their return to our city will be sooner than now anticipated, we but echo the wish felt by their many friends. Apparatus for the Fire Department—baskets, axes, chains, lanterns, etc., have been purchased in Chicago, and are now on the way to Anaheim. They will probably reach here in a week or ten days. It is said that the honey-dew has been falling in the mountains o' nights lately—much to the relief of the beekeepers. John Bush yesterday received a letter from E. S. Peck a former resident of Los Nietos, whom Anaheimers will remember. He is in Colorado, where he was acquired large tracts of land. He wrote for information as to whether sheep in large numbers could be purchased in this vicinity and the price at which they are held. And now we announce that everything is ready for the reception of a vast crowd at the Tivoli Gardens tomorrow. There will be several novel features introduced during the day, the nature of which we have solemnly promised to keep a profound secret. Coaches will run regularly from the town to the Tivoli Gardens during the day. 50 Years Ago January 1903 The city was ablaze with colored electric lights on the occasion of the turnfest, and flags and bunting appeared everywhere. The festivities began on Saturday evening with a concert at Music Hall, singing was participated in by the singing sections of veriens from Los Angeles San Diego. Santa Ana Police On Trail of Theft Suspect Search was being made by Santa Ana police today for a suspect in the $414 theft of cash and checks from William J. Currie Texaco, service station at 1601 Main st. Thieves and burglars also obtained loot valued at $20 in other Santa Ana depredation. Currie named a suspect known by police to have a criminal mind, the man having been at the service station at about the time of the theft. Currie said. Currie had made up a bank deposit of $255 in cash and $161 in checks, then placed it in drawer while he waited on a customer. When he returned for the deposit it was missing. A shoplifter got away with $35 electric clock radio from Boyd Furniture Co. store at 20 S. Main st., and two young men who had been in the store were suspected. Monte Peters, auto dealer Sixth and Broadway, reported that someone stole an auto bump and gravel guard valued at $5 from a parked car in Peters' next to his agency. R B Bowman, 1856 W 17th st. said the rear seat cushion was stolen from his car parked in his garage, the loss estimated at $25. Thieves stole two pneumatics, worth $10 from wheeball rows belonging to Paul Nordstrom and Son's cement contractors. Burglarists broke into the home of John C Bellows, 1001 Riv Lane, while the family was absent but were apparently frightened of when a neighbor, John C Johnson, 1010 River Lane, saw Though the mills of the gods grind slowly, yet they grind exceeding fine. THE WORD in humility could others better than yourselves - Phil 21-4 ACCIDENTS There were 37,845 traffic accidents in Los Angeles last year. 26,350 were hurt and 291 were injured. Shocking? While such figures are not available for Anaheim and its environs, the traffic situation is one of the police department's major headaches. Mark Stephenson has conducted an educational program, repeatedly warning the motoring public of the highway hazards. Be careful or you might be sorry. PASSING Gordon Morley Has a right to be walking on the clouds. He was the first Orange county to score a hole in one of the Walwick course Arval Morris. The Anaheimer who built a better motor. Like the fellow who built the better mouse trap orders are beating their way to the Anaheim firm's office Oswald McCracken. A machinist by trade Oswald had a couple of oil wells in his back yard, they say. Larry Kirchman. The Anaheim flying Dutchman whom John Ward expects to set records in junior college competition this spring. There hasn't been a runner like him around these parts since Kevin Miller. Sam McAthur. The timber topper who had more than his share of tough look. Hes in the army now and called in Anaheimers during his break. LINES OF TYPE Frank Olvera will tell us that it wasn't so long ago that he took a driver on one of his trucks he knew was going to succeed. His name Frank Mueller the kid who dazzled Fullerton college sports followers a few years ago. He due to graduate from UCJA pronto like Art Easter one Anaheimer who apologizes for the rain. He is from joining mind you, but it has opened up more literally than his spirit. Chad Bonds is an Anaheimer who knows his griefs best by a chain grocery shop. FACTUALLY Walter Miller is a man well versed in industrial relations work. And it seems such as he who would discuss the belief that industry makes big profits. The fact is that most of the industrial earnings go to labor. Christmas tree 50 Years Ago January 1903 The city was ablaze with colored electric lights on the occasion of the turnfest, and flags and bunting appeared everywhere. The festivities began on Saturday evening with a concert at Music hall, singing was participated in by the singing sections of verens from Los Angeles, San Diego and Anaheim. The combined choruses with 70 voices were never excelled in Southern California On Sunday morning a special train arrived from Los Angeles bearing 500 people. Athletic exercises were later held at Columbia grove and were witnessed by more than a thousand people At 8 pm the prize singing contest took place in Music hall, Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Diego took part Los Angeles was awarded the first prize, which is an elegant cut glass punch bowl, valued at $100 On Monday there was a tally hoide to points of interest hereabout and a farewell banquet in the evening Great credit for success of the meeting is due to Carl Entenman of Los Angeles, Winter of San Diego and local Turners F A Yungbluth, F Martin and E Turk. Mr. H Cahen has purchased an interest in the Lazarus-Melzer paper house in Los Angeles and is now a partner in the firm Mr Melzer retires. The new firm consists of Mr Lazarus, Mr Cahen and Mr Newmark of Los Angeles. The house is one of the oldest and best established in the city. 25 Years Ago January 1928 Four hundred acres of the Bastanchury ranch have been leased to the Shell Oil Company. The territory lies within the city limits of Pullerton to the north of the city. The consideration, accounting to the Shell Oil Company was $10,000 bonus with one sixth royalty on all oil produced Lumber is being hauled to the lease and the first a trick is to be erected immediately. A large number of Anaheim Elks wen on hand Wednesday at a luncheon given in honor of C F Mallory of Boston grand exalted ruler of the Elks who made a surprise visit to the local lodge A number of local officers were present including Wm Goodrum, Harry D Riley, Geo F Holden, Louis Jacobson, Evan Alsip, L P Bonnat, Dr Bigham. The fact is that most of the industrial earnings go to labor. Christmas trees didn't materialize as expected. Many beautiful trees were hauled to the dump and burned. County's previous lack of early answer for the people living in the county rubbish disposal headache. Protests have been launched against the nuisances created by the nine county dumps. Huge Houston Faulkner recently named his all-Oranco basketball team. It is a team of sky-wrapers. George Yardley Newport 6-5 and Elmer Combs, Huntington Beach, 6-1, Faulkner, 6-8, Lion Hopkins, 6-3, Santa Ana, and Joe Bruce, 6-3, an Anaheim guard. VIGNETTE - Johnny Trezise, the Anaheim rancher, pulled up at the boulevard stop and waited for the signal to change. As he waited, familiar red pick-up pulled alongside. It was Anaheim's Rod-E-Mix man, Kenny Foster with whom Trezise had done police duty while in Fullerton. He shouted "Hi Kenny whatcha lookin' for." "A truck driver," the stocky mixmaster replied and then added "One of my drivers shot himself and I got to find someone to handle his truck." The signal changed, the traffic moved on. Johnny thought over the brief conversation as he drove on. That night he read about a truck driver who committed suicide and then hit all added up. AFTERTHOUGHT — After all, the successful man always does more than is expected. A large number of Anaheim Elks were on hand Wednesday at a luncheon given in honor of C.F.Mallory of Boston grand exalted ruler of the Elks who made a surprise visit to the local lodge. A number of local officers were present including Wm. Goodrum, Harry D Riley, Geo F Holden, Louis Jacobsen, Evan Aisip, L.P.Bonnat, Dr Bigham. Stanton Lions Hear Spurgeon W H Spurgeon III was guest speaker at the Stanton Lions club Monday night at a dinner meeting. He spoke about the Sea Scouts and the coming national Scout Jamboree which is to be held on the Irvine ranch, of which Spurgeon is chief engineer, this coming July. Two new members were installed with ex-president Lewis S Bartleson presenting a lapel pin to Robert Karl Martin and William W Dudley, first secretary of the club giving a pin to James E Howard A third new member Carl Wiesner, Sr., was ill and could not attend Zone Chairman Calvin Pebley presented the Lion's Key to S.S Murauka, secretary, for getting two new members. President Royal Marten gave a report of activities for the first half of the '51-53 fiscal year. Stanton Firemen Extinguish Fire The Stanton fire truck made its second run Tuesday when they put out a fire on the ranch property of William H. Sandersfield, 8622 Orange ave. A smudge pot had been accidently overturned and some crates in which the owner was packing sweet potatoes caught on fire. Seven volunteer firemen answered the call with First Captain James E Howard in charge.
