Despite 'Get Out the Vote' Drives Orange County Ranks 6th in State By GEORGE E. HART Registration lists more up to date. Some civic leaders noted with are being studied by the committee that despite the record vote cast in Orange county at the general election last November this led the county in percentage of county still stood sixth among registered vote cast with a mark counties of the state in percent of 40,397 per cent which was age of the registered vote cast 2,313 per cent above the county Even though Orange county so average. Despite 'Get Out the Vote' Drives Orange County Ranks 6th in State By GEORGE E. HART Some civic leaders noted with surprise slightly tinged with chagrin that despite the record vote cast in Orange counties at the general election last November this county still stood sixth among counties of the state in percentage of the registered vote cast. Even though Orange county voted 88,084 per cent of its registration it didn't do as well as Los Angeles county in getting that county's tremendous voting population to the polls. Los Angeles county ranked fifth. The Associated Chambers of Commerce committee on legislation and taxation headed by George E. Kellogg of Yorba Linda is sufficiently concerned to make a study of this question. The committee believes that the figures do not give a true picture and that Orange county really ranked better than given credit in the statistics. In other words they believe that Orange county didn't actually have as many votes registered as were listed in the great register of the county so that the east in November was really more than 88,084 per cent of the total live registration. The committee believes that some other counties have kept their registration lists more closely screened, by removing names of deceased persons than Orange county has done perhaps and then force have made better showing with respect to percentage of those cast at the polls. Worse red numbers of keeping the records. Associated Chambers Holds State Should Finance Beaches and Parks Acquisition by the state of California forms of beaches and state parks in Orange county such as Bolsa Chica town should be financed exclusively with state funds with a treatment treat the county provides matching fees directors of Association Chamber of Commerce team. At a meeting in Santa Ana they voted to request the state legislature to increase rate there. Gas Co. Rate Hike Hearing Continues Today Hearings on Southern Counties Gas Company's request for $4,852,000 annual rate boost will be registration lists more up to date are being studied by the committees orange and the Fourth district led the county in percentage of registered vote cast with a mark of 40,397 per cent which was 2,113 per cent above the county average. In fact the heavy vote in the Fourth district must have had a slight effect upon the county average because three of the five super districts in the county below the county mark going above the county average was the populous Third district to the north which was 1,153 per cent above the county average. The Third district pulled 89,237 per cent of its registered vote. The First district comprising San Antonio was 20,497 per cent below the county mark but was 20,497 per cent below the county mark. The Fifth district entailing the south side of the county cast a vote of 87,717 per cent of its registration which was 1,033 per cent under the county average. The Second district covering the west side of the county had poorest voting record in the country. It cast 88,785 per cent of its regional office which was 1,259 per cent below the county average. Yet none of these records can justify being called poor. Scoring in the '80s was bad either at the ballot box or on the golf course. Gas Co. Rate Hike Hearing Continues Today Hearings on Southern Counties Gas Company's request for $4852,000 annual rate boost will resume today before Public Utilities Commissioner Harold P. Howe and Examiner Manley Edwards in Los Angeles. The gas company is expected to introduce definitive rate schedules for the various classes of service under the proposed new rates. In addition, a company witness will present a cost of service study which was made at the request of parties interested in the case. Th Southern Counties company serving some 400,000 customers in Orange, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and parts of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties was granted an increase of $1,120,000 annually effective January 1. This increase amounting to about 11 cents per month for the average general service customer covered only by the additional cost of Texas gas delivered to the company at the California border by the El Paso Natural Gas Co. It is subject to review by the Federal Power Commission and possible refund. The present request would add 88 cents more to the average home user's monthly bills a company spokesman estimates. Several public hearings have been held in the case since the company's rate boost application was filed before the commissioner last April. The company bases its request on a general rise in costs resulting in an estimated shrinkage to 4.5 per cent in the return on its invested capital for the year 1952. A year ago the commission denied a similar request in a decision that was appealed to the state Supreme Court. Goodwill Pays $120,000 in Wages in 1952 Dedicated to the employment and rehabilitation of handicapped persons and disabled war veterans, Goodwill Industries of Orange county paid $120,000 in wages during 1952, according to a report today from Executive Secretary George F. Angne. This represented an increase in wages of 28 per cent as compared with an increase of 22.4 per cent in earned income. Angne reported: All income above actual operating costs is paid as wages to the needy handicapped employees, since Goodwill Industries is a non-profit organization, he explained. The entire employment and rehabilitation program of Goodwill Industries is financed by reconditioning and sale of household discards, as Goodwill does not receive any public subsidy, such as Community Chest funds. Goodwill Industries in 1951 paid approximately $93,500 in wages to its employees, and had 70 workers on the payroll at the end of 1951. At the end of 1952, 80 handicapped persons and disabled veterans were employed, Angne said.
