BUY OR SELL-- Get FAST RESULTS IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago January 1878 We had the pleasure of welcoming to our sanctum yesterday Messrs. Tuffree and Jackson. There is no gainsaying the fact that this is a particularly "hard year," but, notwithstanding this patent fact, Anaheim doesn't seem to have retrograded worth a cent. We do not remember any previous year in which three brick buildings were erected, as is the case this "hard year." The buildings of Conrad, Backs and Davis Bros., have been, or will be erected during the year. Two or three such seasons will make a metropolis out of us. The amount appropriated to Los Angeles county from the state school fund is $13,729.33. The total number of children in the county, between 5 and 17 years of age, is 10,297. The amount allowed per child is $1.33. 50 Years Ago January 1903 Harry Hanna, who has been absent in the Hawaiian islands during the past four years, is expected home in a few days on a visit to his parents at Miraflores. helm and Garden Grove schools who are down with diphtheria are all reported to be doing well. There are eight cases, all light and school at the West End will probably open again next week. 25 Years Ago January 1928 County officials are now taking the preliminary steps necessary to the opening of the North Lemon street in Anaheim, through to Orangesthorpe avenue, where it will lead into Harvard avenue, making a new straight line traffic artery between Anaheim and Fullerton. Miss Dora Zeyn and Mrs. C. E. Holcomb of Fullerton visited friends in town on Tuesday afternoon. Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER form would only remember that the folks at home want to keep posted, they'd write more frequently. "There's nothing write about," a lot of youngsters protest. But there even if it isn't more than a postcard with "Hello, Mom; am OK! That'll serve the purpose. A Cannot forgetful. He'd rather be home, but when it comes to putting words on paper—that's worse than sentry duty. AFTERTHOUGHT — You may not like being given a nasty look but remember it's better than having one. Ed Zeus has been ill at home the past week with a threatened attack of typhoid fever. His condition was yesterday reported to be improved, and it is hoped he will soon be able to be out again. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Whann were visitors in town during the week from Los Angeles Mr. Whann played with the Metropolitan band and demonstrated that he is quite as expert a musician as when he resided here and organized the best band that ever played in the county. The children in the west Ana-highway Patrol Searching for 700 Recruits SACRAMENTO—The California Highway Patrol was still engaged in its biggest manhunt today as it pushed a statewide search for 700 men who will be eligible for future openings as traffic officers. Basic requirements are that a man be 21 to 35 years of age, have a high school education or its equivalent and be in good health. The deadline for filling applications is Jan. 16 with a written examination slated for Feb. 14. A list of eligible persons will be created after applicants complete the written examination, physical performance and medical tests and a personal interview. Appointees will be given an intensive 12-week course at the Highway Patrol Academy at Sacramento where they will learn modern techniques of law enforcement and accident prevention. Duties of a traffic officer include patrol of the highways, traffic law enforcement, assistance to motorists, accident investigation, traffic safety education, commercial vehicle inspection and first aid, disaster and emergency work. Present pay scale is $325 to $395 per month. Applications and detailed information about the examination and the job may be obtained at any Department of Employment. Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER Beyond the last horizon's rim, Beyond adventure's furthest quest, Somewhere they rise, serene and dim. The happy, happy Hills of Rest. —A. B. Paine. GOOD WORD — A wise son heareth his father's instruction. Prov. 13:1 STATISTICS—This is the time of the year when various agencies turn in annual reports. Most of these are worthy of more consideration. Although Dr. Edward Lee Russell's detailed annual report has not been released, the figures should have a sobering effect for there were 204 poliomyelitis cases in Orange county last year. There has been 849 polio cases since 1922. That wouldn't be alarming, but nearly half of them came in the last five years. While deaths caused by the crippling disease are negligible, the twisted, misshaped bodies it leaves in its wake is truly alarming. While health authorities hope for the best, 1953 looms over the horizon as another bad polio year—anywhere from 180 to 240 men women and children may be listed as victims before the year runs its course. FACTUALLY—Harry Burnham, Fullerl teacher, recalled how he played for Anahi when Jack Tidball won the Southern California mid-winter tennis tournament for Hollywood Hi in 1929. He directed the 26th renewal of the event in which Anahi's Floyd Baker made such an impressive showing over the last weekend Ronald Logg, another Anaheimer, did as well or better than most Oranconetters by surviving the first round ... Mary Flynn of Marywood surprised everyone (including Perry T. Jones) by gaining the semi-finals. She was beaten by Darlen Hard, the champion Don Derr's ambitious recreation program may yet produce a tennis champion for Anaheim Incidentally, Bill Cook, Anaite tennis coach, played for Long Beach hi about the same time Burnham played for Anahi, but they never knew each other until they became rival coaches. BRIEFLY Alex Maese. 23-year-old half-pint Anaheim, has been trying to become a jockey for three or four years. He excuses horses at Agua Caliente and rode his maiden victory at Pomona last fall. The Anaheimer scored his seventh win on Mooka, the 62-1 shot, he brought home on New Year's day. A Pear Blossom, Calif., carpenter, Don Cody, was arrested on a drunk charge just before the running of that race. Officers searched him and found he had $1135 worth of tickets on the race he didn't see. Merlin Voltzke is a former Orange lad who's trying to become a major league jockey. Both he and Maese played lightweight football. PASSING—Ralph Petty. The 4-foot-3 inch accountant predicted that the Little People's association of which he is a member, will do some big things this year. Herman Hoch. The longfellow who hopes something will be done for fellows who tower 6-foot-6 and over. These men want headroom under awnings... Huge Houston Falkner. His height is an advantage on the basketball court, but an over-sized individual has his disadvantages in a world built for "the average man." Howard Schoenberger. The cable splicer is really an accomplished individual. He's building himself a country estate in his spare time... Jesus Avilia. His son, Joe Avilia, doesn't believe in Santa Claus; but papa got a new family bus and so he must be it. SUGGESTION — Military service is tough on parents. While a hitch in the army, navy or marines may be a new experience to a youngster, it's a prolonged worry to his folks. If the young men and women who don a unimarywood surprised everyone including the semi-finals. She was beaten by Darlen Hard, the champion Don Derr's ambitious recreation program may yet produce a tennis champion for Anaheim Incidentally, Bill Cook, Anaheim tennis coach, played for Long Beach hi about the same time Burnham played for Anahi, but they never knew each other until they became rival coaches.
