BUY OR SELL-- Get FAST RESULT INDEX OF BUSINESS ACTIVITY IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA 1939-40-100 Upward Trend in Business Holds In So. Calif. Business activity in the southern half of California continued its record-breaking climb for the fourth consecutive month in November, B. W. Jordan, manager of Security-First National bank's Anaheim branch, reported today. The bank's index of business in this area has risen during every month since last January, with the exception of June and July when activity was depressed by the steel strike. Compared with November, 1951, last month's increase amounted to 11 per cent. November, 1952, was characterized by considerable strength in retail trade and industrial activity. Condon Poor Security Risk, Committee Says WASHINGTON, Dec. 27. (UP) The house committee on un-American activities asserted today that Dr. Edward U. Condon was not qualified for any position involving national security because of his "propensity" for associating with persons of questionable loyalty. Dr. Condon, who heard about the committee's report in advance of its release, told reporters in St. Louis today that the committee's "lying dishonesty" toward him was based on "political spite work." Dr. Condon, former director of the national bureau of standards, was accused by the committee in 1948 of being the "weakest link in the chain of security protecting atom bomb secrets." He said at that time: "If I am one of the weaker links in the nation's atomic security, this is gratifying information, because I am absolutely reliable and therefore we have nothing to worry about. The country can relax." A number of officials and congress members upheld Condon's loyalty. House subversive hunters continued their feud with the former government scientist in their year-end annual report. In response to charges by Condon that the committee had long refused him a hearing, the committee earlier this year first invited and then subpoenaed him for an appearance. Testifying last Sept. 5, Dr. Condon—now research director for the Corning Glass Works, Corning, N. Y.,—reiterated previous denials that he knew about espionage and subversive activities. Who steals my purse steals trash, But he who filches from me my good name Robs me of that which not enriches him. And makes me poor indeed. — William Shakespeare TODAY'S WORD — And with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you. — Matt. 7:2. RESOLUTIONS — Are you going to make New Year's Resolutions, neighbor? Some folks, make resolutions just to break them. Do you? A good resolution, even if it will be broken, is better than none. Resolutions are good intentions. Many of them are for self-improvement and consequently worthwhile. A person has to have faith in himself before he can have faith in anyone or anything else. Resolutions, even if they are broken, are morale builders. CONTRIBUTION — An anonymous Anaheimer postcards the following four-liner: Roses are red, violets are blue But it's a pity they never get around As those little dandelions do. PASSING — Jess Ramirez, the Placentia aircrafter, who signed up for a hitch in the Air Force. "It's a wonderful opportunity to learn," he said as he told how he hitch hiked the breadth of the land in two days and a night. Bob Breckenridge, former Yorba Linda advertising man, is really going to town in his chosen profession ... Fire Chief Ed Stringer, Anaheim's amiable fire chief, reiterated the oft-repeated warning about unvented gas heaters creating deadly carbon monoxide gas in tightly-closed rooms. Jim Barthelmes is another youngster counting the days when school will begin again. Bill Zahrte covers a lot of ground in doing a day's work. TOWN TALK — Anaheimers are talking about Charles Diggs' resignation. The county planning commissioner will enter private business. His action wasn't entirely unexpected. Anaheimers are pleased with Tommy Kuchel's appointment to Richard Nixon's senate seat by Gov. Earl Warren. Kuchel in turn appointed Orange's Gordon X. Richmond to Congressman Jimmy Utt's inheritance-tax appraisership. LeRoy Lyons, Jr. is in favor of another department for the Orange county superior court. State Senator John Murdy, Jr., and Earl W. Stanley, assemblyman from the other end of the county, will also work for it. The bank's index of business in this area has risen during every month since last January, with the exception of June and July when activity was depressed by the steel strike. Compared with November, 1951, last month's increase amounted to 11 per cent. November, 1952, was characterized by considerable strength in retail trade and industrial activity, with weaknesses developing in building and real estate activity, the bank pointed out. Department store sales in November reached the highest level on record, seasonal factors considered. The bank's seasonally-adjusted index of department store sales for the Los Angeles area, as reported in its Monthly Summary of Business Conditions, was nine per cent above the previous month and 16 per cent above a year earlier. Preliminary data for the first half of December suggest considerably smaller year-to-year gains than in November, although a record Christmas season is indicated, Jordan said. The summary also pointed out that retail stores in the southern half of the state had taxable sales during the first half of 1952 totaling 21½ per cent more than in the first half of 1950 (the six-month period just prior to Korea). Manufacturing employment in the Los Angeles metropolitan area expanded last month to 608,400. This was 19 per cent above a year ago and was the highest level ever recorded except at the height of World War II. One in every three factory jobs in existence now has been created during the past 2½ years. Harbor and Newport Blvd. intersection in Costa Mesa; and Coast Hiway south of Serra near San Clemente... He didn't say it, but that Coast Hiway is a mankiller. More service men are highway casualties than are hurt on active duty, so it seems. PEOPLE — It won't be long now! Vic Reudy will soon be hobnobbing with the baseball elite when the crack of the horsehide resounds against the hickory stick at La Palma Park. Edward Mene, the Mayor of Anaheim's South Side, really enjoyed this holiday season. "Anyone who has been under the weather really appreciates it." Alvin and Martha Trabbert are back in business. In response to charges by Condon that the committee had long refused him a hearing, the committee earlier this year first invited and then subpoenaed him for an appearance. Testifying last Sept. 5, Dr. Condon—now research director for the Corning Glass Works, Corning. N.Y., reiterated previous denials that he knew about espionage and subversive activities charged to a number of his associates. In its report, the committee noted that Dr. Condon denied ever having been a communist and said: "Dr. Condon's appearance, however served to confirm the committee's belief that because of his propensity for associating with persons disloyal or to question loyalty and his contempt for necesary security regulations, that he is not qualified for acceptability to any security position." The committee said that in its earlier A-bomb investigations it was amazed at the numerous instances in which it was disclosed that Dr. Condon was acquainted with known or suspected espionage agents. "The committee did not, does not now, possess information that Dr. Condon was a Communist or committed any act of espionage. However, because of his associates and disdain for security regulations the committee recognized his vulnerability in any post of security." Sen. Ferguson Asks Army to Purge Out Reds WASHINGTON, Dec. 27. (D-Sen. Ferguson (R-Mich.), today urged the armed forces to "purge their ranks" of known and suspected Communists. Ferguson, a member of the senate internal security subcommittee, said subcommittee members "are of the opinion and have some knowledge that there are many Communists among the commissioned grades in active service and in the reserve." He mentioned no names in the prepared statement, designed originally as a series of six articles plugging for extension of the Red-hunting subcommittee. Ferguson is its senior Republican member and presumably will timed their feud with the former government scientist in their year-end annual report. "The committee did not, does not now, possess information that Dr. Condon was a Communist or committed any act of espionage. However, because of his associates and disdain for security regulations the committee recognized his vulnerability in any post of security." His action wasn't entirely unexpected. The demand is urgent. Smart and Final acquired the firm of Haas, Baruch & Co. of Los Angeles. Anaheimers are also discussing the weather and a house sub-committee investigation of El Toro Marine Base that has the top brass guessing. DRIVER'S LICENSE—Has your driver's license expired? Or have you had your's renewed lately? Well, Neubauer did that 'other day'. Really, there wasn't much to the chore. You walk into the Department of Motor Vehicles office in Santa Ana, get an application and fill it out and when you return it, the genial gentleman behind the window gives you a questionnaire on the motor vehicle code. "Fill this out and return it to the next window," you're told. You do that and then they have you sign your name a half a dozen times, read an eye chart, and take your thumbprint "if you do not object." Then you drive around the block while an examiner observes your driving technique. Those fellows are so courteous and nice that it's a pleasure to part with the two-dollar fee. PLEASE NOTE — In a holiday traffic check held in the Tween-City Strip 611 cars were stopped and 69 citations written—55 warnings for minor infractions of the code. Capt. Herbert Null of the Highway Patrol said the three most dangerous corners in the county were: Manchester and Grand avenues in Buena Park; PEOPLE — It won't be long now! Vic Reudy will soon be hobbitting with the baseball elite when the crack of the horsehide resounds against the hickory stick at La Palma Park. Edward Mene, the Mayor of Anaheim's South Side, really enjoyed this holiday season. "Anyone who has been under the weather really appreciates it." Alvin and Martha Trabbert are back in business. They appreciate Anaheim and Anaheimers appreciate their joyful good natured service. Homer Hurst has a new hobby—playing nursemaid to chinchillas. And that's a chore. Ervin Wedel is an Anaheimer who could give Dale Carnegie lessons on "How to Win Customers and Make Friends." Harry Roeschlaub is one of Anaheim's most versatile men. He can handle a white collar job behind the bank teller's window—and he does—and he can operate a gas station. That he does too. He can run farm machinery. And that too, he does. He's equally efficient at any and all jobs he tackles. SPORTLETS — Didcha know that Bert Haysom, the Santana bonus baby, is under doctor's care. He has ulcers. He's lost so much weight that Branch Rickey's worried whether his investment will materialize... Anaheim needs a good basketball pavilion—other than a high school gym—where fast winter sports could be staged. Looks like the Sunset league race will be a chase between Huntington Beach, Anaheim and Fullerton. The Oilers should repeat, but Anaheim or Fullerton might sneak home in a tight race, Joe Hernandez is still looking for a pitcher who might change Kwikset's luck in baseball. PARTING THOUGHT — Everything is normal. The kids who were so good before Christmas have weakened and are themselves again. Ferguson is its senior Republican member and presumably will head the group if it is continued Its authority now is scheduled to expire Jan. 1, when it would have to return to the treasury unexpended balances of the more than $300,000 congress put up to finance its work. A serialized news "handout" is a device new to Capitol hill, and in response to newmen's urging, Ferguson's office finally released all six chapters in a batch, for immediate publication in Sunday editions, instead of the originally planned one-a-day schedule. The leadoff article argued that "if subversive elements in the U.S. can be discovered and controlled, there need be no fear of a shooting war in America." "From everything I can learn," it said, "I believe that the Red army will never go to war with any nation until the Kremlin is satisfied that nation is sufficiently pentrated with Communists and other subversives who will function as an effective fifth column in the target country to weaken its internal strength and assure the success of the Reds' military forces." "It is obvious that further inquiry will be necessary," he said. During the next two years we should like to show how the Communist menace can be destroyed, how and why some Communist penetration efforts have failed, and what success has attended efforts of some organizations to break away from Communist domination."
